To not replace the bottle of wine?

foreveralmost · 20/01/2025 10:34

I live with two other housemates, one stored a bottle of wine in side door of the fridge. As I opened the fridge it fell out and smashed.

I didn’t open the fridge roughly, I opened it normally, She saw me do it. I obviously cleaned it up and apologised - but I was just the unlucky one who happened to open the fridge.

She has now text me to say could I pick her up a new bottle on the way home ..

I'd have offered to replace it when I broke it. You don't have to replace like for like if the original bottle was very expensive, but it's the gesture.

I've lived in enough houseshares with awkward atmospheres that I'd do it just to keep the peace.

Again why are you saying jds £5? You’ve just created that number in your head for reasons only known to yourself ..

No one is necessarily saying it was definitely a £5 or £6 bottle of wine what they are saying tou could go and pick up a bottle for that amount as a gesture. They're saying that for what isn't what some would class as an extortionate amount of money you could have better relations with your house mate

easylemonsqueezy · 20/01/2025 12:48

Would you have expected her to replace it if was your wine and she'd accidentally smashed it?

Lots of people are saying £5 or £6 are just guesstimating - why don't you say how much it was worth. It could be a £3 bottle of plonk or a £30 bottle of nice wine.
If you won't say how much then people are going to go with an average.

ClaudiaWrinklemum · 20/01/2025 12:52

Bloody hell, I’m not surprised the OP is getting snippy. Someone saying the wine cost £5, someone else £6, something about a deep shelf? Where is this even coming from, can’t people read before responding? I’m not the OP and even I am in despair reading some of these responses 😂 OP no you weren’t in the wrong, but for the sake of keeping the peace buy her a bottle of £5 or £6 wine. Whatever hers cost. It’s annoying but not really worth falling out over.

OP: AIBU?
Posters: Yes
OP: No, I'm not.
Posters: erm...

i was thinking the very same thing! 😂

say how much it cost so, total clown.

HollyKnight · 20/01/2025 12:54

No one is saying ex-DWine cost £5 or £6. They're saying replace it with a £5 or £6 bottle of wine.

KnickerFolder · 20/01/2025 12:56

Given how rude OP is being to everyone, even when posters are defending her, and taking offence at the suggestion that it was a £5 bottle of wine yet refusing to actually say whether it was expensive or not, I think we can safely conclude that she is both a cheeky and goady F-er. If I were her housemate, I would be looking for a replacement housemate rather than a replacement bottle of wine.

whatsthatbloodycatdonenow · 20/01/2025 12:56

OP has obviously decided she should not replace it so not sure the purpose of them posting this in AIBU in the first place…

I will never reveal the price of the wine.

I deduced this amount based on the level of maturity of your comments. Young people generally don't have half empty bottles of expensive wine stored in the fridge because they usually can't afford expensive wine and because connoisseurs of expensive wine wouldn't store it open in the domestic fridge.

Because you’ve ignored everyone asking how much the original bottle of wine cost, your roommate only asked for you to “pick up another bottle” - not replace the broken one exactly - and a bottle of wine can easily be bought for £5

Get her one of those and be done, be the bigger person. “Why should I” - because it’s the kind thing to do. Anyone could have opened the door, but it was you who did. For the sake of £5? Get over it.

Nesbi · 20/01/2025 12:57

Buy them a cardboard box wine - then they won’t be able to inadvertently booby trap the fridge in future.

Because it’ll make you look extremely petty, I guess? Or more so, anyway

Times like this are when I wish there was a "roll-eyes in exasperation" reaction emoji - but probably better that there isn't 😂

ETA I am agreeing with you both! and am in exasperation with the OP.

Delatron · 20/01/2025 13:00

It was obviously an accident and not your fault. What should have happened is you apologise profusely (even though not your fault) and offer to buy a new bottle. If she was a decent person she’d say ‘oh no - my fault for storing it that way.’ And all would be well.

I’m guessing you gave off ‘not my fault’ vibes and she thought screw it, I’ll ask for more wine

For the sake of household peace I’d just buy the wine. I would make a point to storing in the proper wine shelf and point that out to her…

purplespink · 20/01/2025 13:00

@foreveralmost okay, then we all agree that YABU and need to replace it, whether it's £5 or £500.

CatsndtheBear · 20/01/2025 13:00

You really have quite an unpleasant way of communicating.

It's probably outing...................... 😂😂

You're just being ridiculous now!

randomchap · 20/01/2025 13:01

If you're not prepared to even consider that you might be being unreasonable, why are you posting in AIBU?

You broke it, albeit by accident, the only polite thing to do is replace it.

SunshineAndFizz · 20/01/2025 13:01

Mate don't be tight, it's just a bottle of wine. Just pick one up.

Delatron · 20/01/2025 13:02

I think just be the bigger person here.

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 20/01/2025 13:03

Stop being so petty. This is not the hill to die on and risk a frosty atmosphere for the foreseeable future. And why on earth would you " never disclose the cost of the wine" .?It's not as though people are asking identifiable or obtuse information. You are coming across on here as belligerent and difficult so who knows what you are like irl

Wingedharpy · 20/01/2025 13:03

Could it be that she just wants you to get her another bottle of wine and she has every intention of reimbursing you for it when you get home?
