I will start. In 2023 i went to the haven caravan park in Berwick. I stupidly forgot to pack a shower mat and i slipped while getting out of the shower. Anyway i had to phone an ambulance as i could not put any weight on my right leg. At the hospital the doctor asked me to stand up. I could put a bit of weight on my leg but i fell again when i tried to walk. My knee just gave way. I still shudder when i think about this holiday.

About 16 years ago corfu - a hotel without air con me and my mum. Getting bitten by mozzies all night in the end woke up and started killing them - room was a like a battle zone splattered blood all over the walls from 100s of mozzies. The hotel had left the doors at the end of the corridors open for air. Just horrific night after night.

@Funkyslippers I'm always suprised by people who go back a lot and never have an issue - whereas we were so careful

ForLemonDog · 19/01/2025 22:02

Burgled in Tenerife. Nice hotel as well but a shitehole of an island. Criminals everywhere.

Kielder Forest caravan site 1975 with my parents.. Nothing bad happened, but it was so boring. Nearly all my caravanning memories are happy ones, but not this.

We camped for one night in Kielder Forest in the 70s. The midges were truly memorable. We had to wipe the midge corpses off the insode of the camper van windows in the morning. The rest of the holiday was in Scotland but we never (and I never have since) encountered midges like the ones in Kielder that night...

Never had an ALL bad holiday but bed bugs in our Paris hotel in '70's wasn't good. And a holiday in a 'cottage' in Wales - my parents arrived before us to find the place locked and no office. There was an open window and Dad thought he'd climb in, he opened the window wide and the whole window frame and glass fell out on top of him. He managed to catch it but we arrived to find him nursing a cut on his head. We've referred to it as the Shed ever since. A holiday in a hotel at Lake Garda, the food consisted of very small portions and was generally awful and some guests staged a protest at gnocchi which was disgusting - the manager made them to leave. Apparently only allowed back because the manager's son was dating the rep!

Alvor in the Algarve, early 2000s. The hotel was not very nice, it was really windy, the pool was freezing, the sea was freezing and there was something about Alvor I just did not like. Never been back to the Algarve.

i remember alvor back in the 1980s. We were in a hotel on 16th floor and could watch new hotels being built all around. I could see small diggers driving up towards massive walls of soil and sitting a minute then turning back around like as if they were saying ‘well i tried’. It was quite entertaining. The sea was brutal. I love sea swimming. But not there. Standing in the shallows and rocks being driven against your ankles by the waves. It was my first ‘package’ holiday. I have never been back to Portugal.

Benalmadena, costa del sol, still have nightmares, total kip, apartments filthy, fast food places everywhere, loud tourists , disgusting food...Still shudder thinking of it

Everintroverte · 19/01/2025 23:06

Camping in late April on the Jurassic coast, it was absolutely freezing despite the many many layers I had with me. I had taken part in an 18 mile trail run on the 1st Saturday and my legs didn't recover all week.
My now ExH had also announced a few weeks before that he didn't know if he wanted to be with me anymore, I had suspicions he was having an affair (which turned out to be correct). Spent the week in icy silence with each other. I had the tent and bags all packed away in about 15 mins on the last morning and cried all the way home .
Horrendous.

About 10 year ago, Spain, id recently lost about 5 stone and decided on a salad for lunch day 1. Didnt leave my bed except to vomit and shit for the next 5 days, genuinly had visions of dying in a Spanish hospital. 2 young kids, my DH was bloody amazing. Managed about a day of our 2 week holiday. Still feel sick if i think about it.

My dad did one of those deals where you don’t know where you are staying till the coach drops you off. It seemed an okay apartment building in Rhodes. That night he went out for cocktails with my step sister and left me home alone (I was 7, she was 16). I woke to find my face and body entirely covered in huge cockroaches! I flew out of the apartment and sat sobbing on the front steps for what felt like hours till they returned. We moved to a hotel the next night but it was a horrible scary experience.

@lifebow and it seems another poster on here had the same at exactly the same complex as us- ironically I picked it as a well respected chain and 5 star ( well Egyptian 5 star!!! )

BringMeTea · 19/01/2025 23:15

@honeylulu I feel bad for you, I truly do but I just almost cried laughing at the image of a concerned Tunisian security guard herding you back in to avert a mass suicide. 😂

AlleycatMarie · 19/01/2025 23:26

Holiday to the USA. Nearly died, spent a month in hospital there and ran up a huge bill (luckily had great travel insurance!). Amazing hospital care but it was so scary to be so far away from home not knowing if I would recover and see home ever again!

Notthisagainyouidiot · 19/01/2025 23:35

Greek island 2002. A combination of many unfortunate things.
Was a teacher then so had to go in school holidays. Carefully picked a hotel with studios only thinking this would lessen the amount of children. Except the brochure didn't mention the new block of 2 bed apartments that they'd built. Or the fact that 2 other hotels used the pool as well.
Got bitten by every flying thing going. No pharmacy in the town so had to get to a bigger town for (not v effective) cream.
It was the year the euro came in so prices had gone up. Also this was a popular island for Greek holiday makers but the numbers were down. Lots of v depressed bar owners.
The island was lovely but our apartment and resort wasn't. I would've coped better if I'd had some sleep but spent most nights being driven mad by itchy bites.

MrsJHernandez · 19/01/2025 23:38

Dominican Republic circa 2014.

Horrid food.
Disappointing room.
Constantly accosted by people trying to sell you crap, even in the resort grounds.
Children screaming all day by the pool (sorry MN!)
Extremely slow service in every area.
Couldn't leave resort by foot.
Maids made a riotous noise in the hallway every single morning.
Flight home was delayed by about 17 hours (had to wait for an empty plane and crew who hadn't worked their hours to fly out from the UK because our original plane had a fault and by the time it was fixed, the crew were over their working hours and couldn't fly)

It's been a while so there was probably more we hated about the place that I've blocked out. I even cried a couple of times which is not like me. I just wanted to go home but was stuck there for 2 weeks and it was my birthday during that time.

Only plus points were the weather, beach and sea. One of the best I've ever been to. That, and the boat trip we did which was a fun, beer filled day out swimming with manta rays, playing around in the sea, having a laugh with the other passengers and crew, spotting sea life and a BBQ. Everyone had a great day.

Took a 4yo,a 2yo and a 1yo to a caravan park in North Cornwall in the second week of September some years ago . The place was filthy: the tiles in the shower room had black mould growing between, the beds had thick dust and other people's sweet wrappers and condoms underneath. Only the top plate in the kitchen was washed: the others had been stacked up sticky with food. Even the beach was dirty with loads and loads of flies. it just felt as if even the sea needed longer to rest after the onslaught of summer visitors. They cleaned our unit twice at our request but we were only planning a 4 night Mon-Fri break and with small children you do need a clean base. The TV only had 4 or 5 channels, which was what we were used to but on the second day the planes hit the Twin Towers so all TV and radio channels mentioned little else for the next couple of days.
We arrived on Monday night; stayed up until 2am while different crews deep cleaned and reception tried to find us somewhere else. DCs slept in the car until it was ok to at least sleep inside. 9/11 was the Tuesday. We gave up and left on the Wednesday. It was grim.
We did go to Farm World on the way home and had a lovely day.

billycat321 · 19/01/2025 23:51

Amazing to think that in the 60s students would spend the summer hitch hiking round Europe and staying in youth hostels. But boyfriend ( fellow student ) and I did just that. He turned out to be a right weirdo, obsessed with emptying his bowels every day (probably because his mummy said he must) so he would not come out of the loo until the desired result had been achieved. So I spent most of the holiday waiting outside gents loos, sometimes up to an hour. After using the loo, he would spend at least 20 minutes scrubbing his hands clean until they were raw and bleeding. I learned years later that he didn't get married until he was forty and how he fathered 2 sons is a mystery- he had no idea when I knew him what went where and no indication that he had any interest in finding out.
