To think talking to 15 sperate people in a day isn't really that many?

I've seen a meme going round Facebook three times now. Apparently the average number of different people a person talks out loud to in a day is 15.

The comment section is always full of people saying they don't speak to anywhere near that amount of people in a day and some quite horrified by the mere idea of it.

But on three separate occasions, I think I have had fairly quiet days and each time my number has been between 12-18. Is 15 really very much??!!

Today it has been:
My husband and both of my kids
my daughter's teacher
the lady in tesco express
Another mum I saw in tesco express
3 separate customers
my supplier
Two different people on the phone about a bill
A taxi driver

Total: 13

I've only left the house to do school runs and pop to tesco express while out.

So... how many people do you speak to in a day? For the purpose of the experiment, online or messages does not count. It needs to be spoken out loud.

Are you unwell? That response seems very unusual.

No, I'm alright. Are you?

Cynic17 · 17/01/2025 17:02

Usually one; occasionally zero. Typically only two or three.
All face to face - hardly ever speak to anyone on the phone.
I do work part-time at a theatre, so those days would be much higher, but the thought of 15 a day as an average is horrific!
I treasure the weekends when husband is away and I don't speak to a soul for over 48 hours - absolute bliss!

Yes. I am. I meant that being exhausted by conversations with two people is unusual.

biscuitsandbooks · 17/01/2025 17:04

15 sounds a lot to me now as I work alone, but when I worked in retail it would have been a slow day, lol.

Today so far I've spoken to DH, FIL, a client, the lady in the post office, three nurses and a doctor, plus a cashier at ASDA - that's not a normal day though!

Plantymcplantface · 17/01/2025 17:06

Great thread. Today: DH, DD1, DD2
Work: meeting x 3 external colleagues, next meeting x 1 colleague, another colleague x 1
Errands: shop assistants x 2, barista, garage attendant
later between 2-5 at friends house fo drinks.
so 14-16 people.
plus another half dozen on WhatsApp and Text.

This is fairly typical, I love people!

AppleKatie · 17/01/2025 17:07

Well over 50 and it was a comparatively quiet day for me.

i would say it is often 100+ on a working day. Then at the weekend I probably range from 2-20 with an avg somewhere around 10-15.

MirandaWest · 17/01/2025 17:07

So far today in actual speaking three people on the phone. Also the cat. Will speak to DS at some point when we’re both awake.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 17/01/2025 17:08

I think I'd struggle to get to 15 a week some weeks!

DP and DD are obviously two who I speak to daily
There's 13 in my business but we work from home half the week and I only actually need to interact with about 4 of them for work purposes, so lets say 7 on a weekly basis.
I talk to my Dad and brother around once a fortnight, so lets go with 1 a week

OK, I'm up to 10.
Probably see a friend or two every week so lets be generous and say I'm up to 12.
Some weeks I might see SIL or FIL, or DP or DD might have a friend round, but most of the the time those last three spots would have to be taken up with the postman, shop assistants, bar staff. I'm not really one for small talk with random strangers so can you really class "A pint of Madri please" "That'll be £4.20" "Thanks" as a conversation?

I probably do just about manage 15 most weeks, but it's not by much.

CandyCane457 · 17/01/2025 17:10

I think it can depend a lot on your job. My boyfriend WFH in an admin role and can go all day without speaking to anyone, until I get home. He might speak to his friend on the phone. Obviously if we are out socialising of an evening that’s different.

Whereas I’m a primary school teacher.
Not sure if you want to include the 30 children I’ve spoken to.
But in addition to that, I’ve spoken to:
My year group partner teacher
My two TAs
Three other TAs just in passing on the corridors
Another teacher at break time
The head teacher
Pastoral lead
Five other members of staff in the staff room at lunch tine
Two parents
My friend on the phone as I drove home
My boyfriend when I got home
My mum will ring me later

So that’s 19, or 49 including the children… versus the one (me), potentially two (if his friend calls) my boyfriend will speak to today!

zingally · 17/01/2025 17:10

I'm a primary school teacher, so that changes it a bit.

On a non-school day, it's probably less than 5 people.

mitogoshigg · 17/01/2025 17:10

15 seems about right, that's assuming a normal day, more if i actually go somewhere for an activity like choir

Sesame2011 · 17/01/2025 17:13

I have a partner but no kids, I also WFH.

Today I've spoken out loud to:

My partner
The receptionist at the dentist via the phone
Colleague from IT dept via Teams Call
Sent a couple of voice notes to a friend who lives overseas.

And that's pretty typical of me!

ThisDangDeer · 17/01/2025 17:13

Easily over 100 per day every work day.

Oh and the dog!

SnarkSideOfLife · 17/01/2025 17:14

Today

dd
dh
the dog groomer
a starbucks employee
waitrose cashier
2 colleagues
1 student
3 friends on the morning dog walk

That’s quite a packed day for me to be honest 😆

ohtowinthelottery · 17/01/2025 17:15

Today I have spoken to 3 people; my DH, my DS (but only because we had to pop in to his house as he needed help with something) and a car salesman.

Zanatdy · 17/01/2025 17:15

I speak to way more monday - friday at work. Saturday probably not far off as I walk in a group. But not sunday. Only a phone call and tesco delivery guy

mitogoshigg · 17/01/2025 17:15

Today I've spoken to dh, 5 volunteers at work (over the day, had no public programming today), lady in Boots, lady in Poundland, man in Lidl, man in petrol station, neighbour in car park and heading to the pub after dinner so even if we aren't being sociable, I'll probably speak to 5-10 people there

QueenDoria · 17/01/2025 17:16

Prob around 200 on a busy day

Allatonce2024 · 17/01/2025 17:16

If I'm not working I probably speak to 2-3 people a day on average

June2008 · 17/01/2025 17:16

I'm a teacher so on a five lesson day with parents evening (got one coming up) it could be well over 200!

Knowitall69 · 17/01/2025 17:17

165 for me.

That's 5 periods of 30 kids + 15 in Lunchtime Detention.

Every single one a twat.

Thank god for the weekend!

museumum · 17/01/2025 17:18

Do online videocall meetings count? I’ve done three today with 2, 5 and 1 other people.
only spoken to ds and dh in person.
will go out to dinner later in a group of about 12, will probably directly chat with maybe 8-10 of them.

i don’t go out with a big group daily or even weekly so often wouldn’t reach 15 I guess. Unless I commute or shop.

Middlemarch123 · 17/01/2025 17:19

My son, my daughter, the bathroom fitter, my partner, my two cats. Two dog owners when I collected their dogs to walk. Talked to their three dogs. Lovely quiet day.

Greeneyegirl · 17/01/2025 17:19

Hmmm in person:
Husband
Daughter
3 X staff at daughter's nursery
I'll probably speak to my mum friend at nursery pick up
And that's it actually. I would usually have quite a few teams calls (WFH) that would bring the number up
