To think talking to 15 sperate people in a day isn't really that many?

I've seen a meme going round Facebook three times now. Apparently the average number of different people a person talks out loud to in a day is 15.

The comment section is always full of people saying they don't speak to anywhere near that amount of people in a day and some quite horrified by the mere idea of it.

But on three separate occasions, I think I have had fairly quiet days and each time my number has been between 12-18. Is 15 really very much??!!

Today it has been:
My husband and both of my kids
my daughter's teacher
the lady in tesco express
Another mum I saw in tesco express
3 separate customers
my supplier
Two different people on the phone about a bill
A taxi driver

Total: 13

I've only left the house to do school runs and pop to tesco express while out.

So... how many people do you speak to in a day? For the purpose of the experiment, online or messages does not count. It needs to be spoken out loud.

Today it's five for me, I've been working from home. Would be 20 when in office.

BrieAndChilli · 17/01/2025 17:22

Well today was a quiet day = 11
yesterday had a couple of teamsmeetings and was out volunteering in the evening so = about 60!

NeedABabelFish · 17/01/2025 17:22

I often only speak with 2 or 3 people in a day, sometimes only with DH.
I'm self-employed as a dog walker and the majority of my clients aren't at home when I go to take their dogs out. I may come across other people when I'm walking and say hello or have a brief chat but occasionally I have the fields and footpaths to myself - it's bliss!

FlippityFloppityFlump · 17/01/2025 17:23

Today I have spoken to 9
DH DS Friend, her parents, 2 staff in cafe, school receptionist,

Yesterday I think was 10 and Wednesday was 13

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 17/01/2025 17:25

Interesting question ñ

Today 2 - DH & DS
Yesterday - DH & DS, had lunch out so spoke to the waitress, and went into the office and spoke to four people there. So 7.
Wednesday - four - DH & DS, work colleague on Zoom, and one work related phone call.

Most this week was probably Monday as there was a Zoom meeting with maybe 7 or 8 people in it, though I didn't say much more than hello and goodbye.

I would say it's rare for me to speak to over ten people in a day.

PandaChopChop · 17/01/2025 17:25

Today I have spoken to..
DC x 2
Their friends x 3
Friends parent x 2
Car wash men x 2
Cafe chef
Hairdresser
Assistant in the Coop
My friends x 4
My new boss
So a total of 17? And I haven't even been to work today 😆
That's fairly regular for me though cos I do tend to chat etc. I've also messaged many more friends today as well.

UnusuallyBuoyantTeabag · 17/01/2025 17:26

10 today but it can be more, or as few as 4 if I don't speak to anyone on the school run on a non working day 😄

Gotback · 17/01/2025 17:27

5 hens
3 cats
1 husband

CautiousLurker01 · 17/01/2025 17:27

Gosh is this like the aspiration 10k steps? Cos I’ve had an above average interaction day today. Sum total of 8 people (one on the phone) but only because I needed a passport application signed and had to have it checked at the PO. Usually about 4-5 people max. And, yes, I know I am sad and isolated… but that’s life after 19years of parenting SEN kids and being a SAHM.

popandchoc · 17/01/2025 17:28

Today i have spoken to 9 people. On a working day it would be a lot more.

Cherrysoup · 17/01/2025 17:28

Countless, because I’m a teacher so 30x5 children today, plus my form-twice. On top of this, I wore a very vibrantly coloured outfit today and everyone who saw me commented on it, staff, kids in the corridor.

MigGril · 17/01/2025 17:29

I actually couldn't say, a lot on a work day as I work in a high school. I say hello to any staff I see at work and occasionally interact with some of the students to, even though I don't teach. It's nice to have a quiet day at the weekend.

RampantIvy · 17/01/2025 17:29

I have only spoken to 3 people today.

I wouldn't find 15 people too many, but I think my average is below that as I WFH most days.

vanillafudgecake · 17/01/2025 17:30

14 today

DH
DC
Parents on the school runs
Viewed a house
Solicitor

TheignT · 17/01/2025 17:30

Seven, DH, DS, 2xGC, dentist's receptionist, assistant at pharmacy, pharmacist. That's probably on the high side for me.

I forgot the parcel delivery woman so that makes it eight.

Rosesgrowonyou · 17/01/2025 17:31

Over a 100. Customer facing job in a large workplace, Plus bus drivers, shop assistants and a couple of neighbours.

JaneBoleynViscountessRochford · 17/01/2025 17:31

Three today, my DH and two DC. It’s a wfh day and Fridays have no meetings to let some actual work get done. I did speak to colleagues via teams message but that’s it.

Went to the gym at lunch but had my headphones on listening to a podcast so didn’t speak to anyone. I am having a quiet night in front of traitors and the kids don’t have friends around tonight.

I am not massively social anyway and don’t really enjoy small talks but Mon-Fri I will have lots of meetings where I will speak to people face to face and maybe see my parents or school parents on the school run.

DH is a chatter and did school run and afternoon clubs today so he will have spoken to loads of people.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 17/01/2025 17:31

I am pretty housebound, so I usually only speak to 2 people - dh and ds3. Today that will be 3 people, because I saw my physio. Mondays I go to a knitting group so can speak to 10+ people there.

NerrSnerr · 17/01/2025 17:31

Let me think
Husband, son, daughter 3
Son's friend and dad 2
Bus driver x2 journeys 2
Staff canteen for coffee/ food 3
Meetings 3
Walking home from school 4
Dropping daughter at activity and paying 5

There'll be more this evening as I'll supervise above activity after her formal session to chat to others. Might also go to the shop later.

This is about a usual day for me today.

TCCOS · 17/01/2025 17:32

I’m wfh today and have spoken to DH, DD, Ocado man, dry cleaning man, three people on the phone, and I’m going out tonight so that will add a few as well. On a day in the office it would be more like 30-40.

NerrSnerr · 17/01/2025 17:32

There's been others I have said a quick hello to as well, probably about ten of those.

Asuitablecat · 17/01/2025 17:33

150 kids- does it count if they're not listening?

  • about 12 random kids 26 staff 2 parents My own family

Saturday will probably be over 20 people, just by buzzing about

AsmallabodeIsallweWant · 17/01/2025 17:36

Have been between jobs since end of October. Just starting soon a new one. Not a driver, so husband does the food shop also. Have been happily home for many many days with few bits and bobs done outside the house. Usually I work in sales so I do talk to people. But I talk to people online, so? At least I do not just self insulate

Judellie · 17/01/2025 17:36

5 I suppose. DH, DD, DS, the Ringtons man who came to the door and the trolley guy at Tesco at lunchtime- my Tesco has a charity shop inside and a community bookcase. Quite often I have books; I can't carry them as i have a problem with my arm atm so need a trolley. Tesco have a maddening habit of insisting all trolleys are pushed up beside the door.
So if I park near the clothes bank I need to walk all the way up to get a trolley, come all the way back with it, put the books in and go back to the door. Gets my steps up I suppose!
This reminds me I had a brief conversation with a lady at the community bookcase so 6.
Loads of Teams, email, whatsapp conversations tho as wfh today. I speak to more when I'm in the office obviously.
I spoke to to least 12 yesterday.
