To think talking to 15 sperate people in a day isn't really that many?

I've seen a meme going round Facebook three times now. Apparently the average number of different people a person talks out loud to in a day is 15.

The comment section is always full of people saying they don't speak to anywhere near that amount of people in a day and some quite horrified by the mere idea of it.

But on three separate occasions, I think I have had fairly quiet days and each time my number has been between 12-18. Is 15 really very much??!!

Today it has been:
My husband and both of my kids
my daughter's teacher
the lady in tesco express
Another mum I saw in tesco express
3 separate customers
my supplier
Two different people on the phone about a bill
A taxi driver

Total: 13

I've only left the house to do school runs and pop to tesco express while out.

So... how many people do you speak to in a day? For the purpose of the experiment, online or messages does not count. It needs to be spoken out loud.

6?
My 2 parents, husband, daughter.
Checkout operator in supermarket and ditto in store where I bought hay for guinea pig.
Additional text/email contact with brother and 1 friend.

ForSparklyLemonLurker · 17/01/2025 16:29

Every day if I stayed home? 2
Every day if I go out? Maybe 3 or 4

Clarasmum444 · 17/01/2025 16:30

On a work day about 50-60 people during the day and then dd and OH when I get home.
Weekends, dd and OH and sometimes my mum.

miniaturepixieonacid · 17/01/2025 16:31

Totally depends. On a busy term time day, it can be 100s (I'm a teacher and I do a very people heavy hobby some evenings). On a quiet, holiday day it can be absolutely zero (I live by myself). As an average, I suppose about 50 but that's fairly meaningless when it's often 0-1 and often 200-300.

kiraric · 17/01/2025 16:31

Today felt like a quiet day because I am WFH but even so:

DH and the kids - 3
Sainsbury's delivery guy - 1
Trustee meeting - 9 including receptionist
Cubs leaders when I drop DS off later - 2

So 15

On an office day, easily 30

Bigearringsbigsmile · 17/01/2025 16:34

26 children in my class who I speak with ALL DAY!.
Children from all the other classes.
At least 10 colleagues daily.
My husband, my son, other family members....

About 50 people a day?

ViciousCurrentBun · 17/01/2025 16:34

When I was working it could be a hundred in a day no problem.
Now retired and today it’s been.

DH, DS, 2 friends seen separately, 4 friends I volunteer with, nice people but more acquaintances, 4 shop assistants, one random lady in the street.

Nogaxeh · 17/01/2025 16:35

I was in an online meeting with seven or eight people, how many of them would I count as speaking to?

I only spoke to one of them directly during the meeting, so if that counts as one, then my total so far is 3. Might get up to 4 if I say anything to my father-in-law this evening.

There's been days in the past when my OH has been away that the number could be 0.

Caravaggiouch · 17/01/2025 16:35

Does it have to be in person? I’ve spoken to about 10 in person today but am working from home - could add another 15-20 that I’ve spoken to on video calls through work.

Doggymummar · 17/01/2025 16:35

Maybe 5 on a work day 1 on Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday

abracadabra1980 · 17/01/2025 16:36

5 to 4.30pm, but I'm semi retired and on my day off. That could change to 15+ if I was working.

Titasaducksarse · 17/01/2025 16:36

6 today
Partner
4 whilst walking dog
1 person on phone

CAJIE · 17/01/2025 16:36

less and less I imagine as people find it hard and bothersome to speak to many people these days. They would prefer to stay inside and get parcels from Amazon and listen to their ring tone door bells to keep other humans out because the world is a dangerous place.Or put their aggressive f..off headphones off so no one speaks to them and they can ignore everything except their bubble.Cinema is dying in terms of movies theatres cos its so much safer only to speak to family or a few friends and watch in family or couple film nights. If you go out you might have to engage with someone and the capitalist tech folk dont want that..And do not attempt to smile or speak to people in a friendly fashion or you are a sad weirdo with no friends,a pervert or a older person who is lonely and must be pitied..

Thisismyusername3 · 17/01/2025 16:39

I have spoken to 13 people in person today and it seemed like quite an ‘unsociable’ day so I guess I must speak to more on a ‘busy’ day.

BistoBear · 17/01/2025 16:39

Eleven today, would normally be more but I had two visits cancelled and most of my colleagues work from home on a Friday.

Husband
Greggs worker
Colleague x 2
School receptionist
Parents x 2
SLT
Teacher
Shop worker
Neighbour

Globusmedia · 17/01/2025 16:40

I work from home in a fairly solitary job. At least three days a week I will only speak to one person - my husband. And the cat.

I'm on whatsapp with probably 8-10 friends throughout the day though.

hideawayforever · 17/01/2025 16:41

just my husband today, so far.

gingercat02 · 17/01/2025 16:41

Loads at work, 20+ usually
Today, WFH this morning off this afternoon, 2 - DH and DS

Partylikeits1985 · 17/01/2025 16:44

At least that if I’m at work. On my days off probably only 2-3 people face to face.

inmyera · 17/01/2025 16:44

10 for me today and that's probably more than usual. Massive introvert, work for myself from home, usually do food shop online but went to supermarket today hence more than usual!

OneBadKitty · 17/01/2025 16:44

Depends on your job, but for most people who go to work in place with lots of people it's going to be more than 15. I work in a school and not even counting the children, I've spoken to more than 15 adults today: the two teachers I work with, the deputy and 7 other colleagues in a meeting, several teachers on passing in the corridor, the two admin staff, the lollipop lady, the Ocado driver, the next door neighbour, my husband, two swimming teachers, a bus driver, two men standing outside the pool- that's 25 already and then of course I must have spoken to so many children I can't even count- there's 30 in the two classes I've worked in, a few in while passing in the corridor, and several more while on playground duty from other classes.

If I pop to the pub later for a drink I'll probably ad a handful more people to that list as well!

CharityShopChic · 17/01/2025 16:45

So today I have spoken to

DH, three kids
daughter's flatmate and her dad
my mum (on the phone)
3 x shop assistants

so that's 10? unless you count someone I held the door open for who said "thanks" and I said "welcome". You'd need to average it over a week though, other days I speak to many more people.

NotAPartyPerson · 17/01/2025 16:45

5, but I've been stuck inside a lot.
Yesterday was 25 but that felt like a bit much!

gingercat02 · 17/01/2025 16:45

gingercat02 · 17/01/2025 16:41

Oh and the Morrisons delivery man, so 3

Octavia64 · 17/01/2025 16:45

I used to be a teacher.

Easily over a hundred most days.
Say I taught 5 classes of 30 each. In most classes I'd aim to check in with each child at some point in the lesson.

That's 150, and that's before we start including other teachers at break, meetings after school etc.

No wonder I was do exhausted!

Today so far 2 people and very happy with it.
