To think London is in a major decline?

I’ve lived in London (zone 2) for 10+ years. It’s always been pretty ‘real’ here but since the end of covid really everywhere just seems so, so awful.
Dog shit everywhere, spit everywhere, council owned parks closed and locked, people littering more than ever before. Get on a bus and it’s just people screaming in to a FaceTime on top volume, people blasting TikTok. Kids being stabbed in broad daylight, people shooting up heroin near the nearby primary school. The area has a lot going for it but it really seems wherever I go there is an awful decline.
Has anybody feeling the same actually moved out? Do you regret it?

I agree.

Same here. Everyone is very individualistic.

Sausagenbacon · 19/01/2025 17:38

What you believe you are entitled to isn't happening so I am suggesting that you start caring about why this issue and think about what solutions might work
I don't believe there is a solution in a world where these people are placed 1st. Our social care bill is already vastly outpacing any form of council spending.

Exactly. The decline started 50 years ago and this is one reason why. Most people have become extremely selfish and far less concerned about their communities. It's all going very wrong in an obvious way because their is no cohesion or care for others.

Sausagenbacon · 19/01/2025 17:41

Because you had a big reaction to a woman who is living rough pissing in public. Wondered if you had as big a reaction to men pissing en masse in public.
I'm not buying that. You don't know me, but you want to fit me into a pigeon hole of your choice.

@VoodooRajin
Yes Shoreditch is a cesspit. Rubbish from all the nightspits/overt drug use is ridiculous.
People being physically sick/urinating in the streets.
Takeaways and restaurants stacking rubbish the height of a van daily and the markets/surtounding streets are vile.
Gentrified is not a word I would apply to Shoreditch.
Overpriced most certainly, but nowhere close to being gentrified!

StarDolphins · 19/01/2025 17:49

I live in the Peak District & even here is in decline. Not much dog crap but I don’t feel
safe walking after dark or anywhere secluded any more. I used to feel
safe walking home even at 4-5am. Now I don’t feel
safe walking home with my DD at 6pm. Too many men loitering & groups of older teens. Never any police & the council have decided its best to switch all the street lights off so they can buy derelict shops.

I love London and live in a very nice part of it. I feel safe and don’t experience many issues apart from terrible traffic and parking costs. I think the problems people are mentioning (crime, drugs etc) are due to the rubbish Mayor we have and the terrible successive governments we have had. Now we have Starmer and his corrupt lot making life more expensive for “working people” (although I’d love to know who they mean by that).

I can see massive decline for the UK without decent leadership.

shreddies · 19/01/2025 18:30

I really don't buy this idea that London has got worse over the last 50 years. There are whole areas that were pretty much unusable, Kings Cross being the obvious example.

It's still a great city. But austerity and a global pandemic have taken their toll. I don't think things look good for the UK in general

I was just about to say the same 😱

We are planning to retire in Shoreditch. The houses are not cheap, lol. It is gentrified but retains a gritty feel with fantastic shops and restaurants. Buzzy and central. So close to the City.

In what way is the present government corrupt?

It's so easy to smear people without any evidence

What corruption is proven in the current government?

We’re witnessing the breakdown of society, it’s going to speed up and get a lot worse. Depressing but no point being delusional and pretending everything is fine.

It's like the Bonnie Blue thing. There's a 'last days of Rome' feel about the UK in terms of crime, debauchery and cultural decay.

My oldest friend moved to Shoreditch (in social housing) 25 years ago and would 100% agree with this.

Two contradictory stats and yours don’t support your earlier claim.

Er what did the Tories do for working people?

Well i guess there are good parts and bad parts in all areas

Probably said the same in dicken's time

Phannyphart · 19/01/2025 20:55

Wow! I’ve just caught up.
It seems it really is area dependent, even street dependent. Although I did love all the comments such as the “it’s fine where we are in Hampstead” haha 😝 of course it bloody is!
I do believe we will probably at some point jump ship, maybe London will come to be amazing again, who knows.

We are very very close to this area- believe me it’s correct what’s being described here.

Errr, no.

Have you been looking at a lot of Reform social media?

I live in zone 5, in a poor area. It's no worse here than it was 5 years ago. The less poor parts of London are gorgeous.

I don’t have social media so no. I live in zone 2, as I said. Respectfully, zone 5 is barely London 😂

I’m also hazarding a guess you’re in Barking or similar, and that wasn’t always a shithole as much as it is now, no way. That’s got way worse, too. Was a working class area, yes, but now it’s underclass

So let's get this straight, zone 5 (which is still london), and hampstead are not in decline, but zone 2 is - which covers approx 93sq miles? And that's all gone to shit?

Not what I’ve said at all but you seem to want a bit of conversation via argument tonight- perhaps a bit too much time on your hands.
I’m not the person for that, maybe try another commenter :)
