To think London is in a major decline?

I’ve lived in London (zone 2) for 10+ years. It’s always been pretty ‘real’ here but since the end of covid really everywhere just seems so, so awful.
Dog shit everywhere, spit everywhere, council owned parks closed and locked, people littering more than ever before. Get on a bus and it’s just people screaming in to a FaceTime on top volume, people blasting TikTok. Kids being stabbed in broad daylight, people shooting up heroin near the nearby primary school. The area has a lot going for it but it really seems wherever I go there is an awful decline.
Has anybody feeling the same actually moved out? Do you regret it?

I was on a bus in a queue on park lane recently.
There's an encampment of rough sleepers in the central reservation and a woman came out of a tent, bent over at the waist, pulling up her skirt, and urinated. In full view of everyone going by.
I don't care what her problems are, I just don't think it should happen.
Personally, I would clear out all the people in the tents and burn them down.
But I do expect the council to make some kind of an effort.
It feels like the 3rd world in some part of the city.

Obviously that was disgusting but where are you going to clear all these people out to? Are you planning to provide them with some housing to stop them urinating on the streets?

Sausagenbacon · 19/01/2025 13:32

Tbh I don't care. Why should I?

That's a really foolish response and part of the reason we have these sort of social problems now! You should care, for various reasons. Perhaps the only one that will appeal to you though is that they might turn up in your own neighbourhood and start camping there instead.

Sausagenbacon · 19/01/2025 13:56

No. That's just your pov.
I believe that I have paid my taxes, and contributed to Society all my life. In return, I believe that the people I pay taxes to should maintain my environment.
There has been a long lasting problem with Roma encampments in this area. The authorities seem to be incapable of dealing with it. Why is this? IMO an excessive concern for that community 's rights.

DoubleShotEspresso · 19/01/2025 13:57

Born and bred Londoner here.

I think many areas such as Brixton and Herne Hill are unrecognisable versus their time in the 80's. Though they've seen much improvement, they have lost much of their soul and individuality, but are unaffordable to many Londoners.

The relentless stream of pointless chicken shops/nail salons/barbers and phone shops is depressing, in that so many areas are just now duplicates of each other.

Agree Greenwich & Blackheath are great- though this overlooks neighbouring Woolwich which is my idea of hell to visit. So much money has been poured in there, yet it gets worse daily. But there's never ever any thought as to why this is.

Homelessness, drugs/knife crime and gangs are a worry often discussed amongst friends. Many have or will leave their part of London when their children reach teenage / secondary years. We don't have that option as this is where our family is.

I do think there has been decimating change to East London, very detrimental to the community that was so brilliant, inspiring & fun before. I have big roots/connections there so this is deeply sad to see. Shoreditch is a cesspit mostly, though Spitafields has vastly improved.
I do think there are many conversations which should be positively held, but most are just afraid of saying the wrong thing and local councils too keen to be seen as doing the right thing, the result being a real decline in community cohesion and also safety.

I would never leave, but am sad that our children are unable to explore London as I did unhindered at q young age. Everything needs planning, risk assessing and generally just loads of consideration.
We have a mayor failing but knighted- and a police service unable to cope, too low in numbers and calibre to be effective. It's so sad.

Having said all this, I have no desire to leave and cannot think of anywhere else in the country I would want to live.

Horses for courses, I can see some will be put off. Is where you live pretty @Whammyyammy ? Not being sarky just interested

Yes. I live in a rural village near Bsth.

Ffjebrofw · 19/01/2025 15:04

Having said this I still love South Kensington

How do you feel about men pissing on the street regularly? A friend had to literally step in a massive puddle of piss to get to her office after the last 'we love tommeh' demo in Westminster

SkaterGrrrrl · 19/01/2025 16:58

All is well here in leafy SW London so YABU.

In central or inner London?!

I assume Richmond's park?

Coldanddamp · 19/01/2025 17:09

I'm not sure the OP was referring to outer London/Surrey borders? But I may be wrong.

Pamosonic · 19/01/2025 17:13

London is an absolute toilet these days. Even the touristy bits are getting a bit bad now. Law and order in this country is non existent people just do what they want with no retribution.

Sausagenbacon · 19/01/2025 17:21

How do you feel about men pissing on the street regularly?
How do you think I feel? Delighted/depressed ?
What a weird question

Although to be fair men have been pissing in the streets for centuries

Ywyt3 · 19/01/2025 17:23

I don’t know - Muswell Hill (zone 3) is still pretty good. Plus, after just visiting New York - London is doing well! NY is dire.

Because you had a big reaction to a woman who is living rough pissing in public. Wondered if you had as big a reaction to men pissing en masse in public.

Gentrified shoreditch is a cesspit?

We’re witnessing the breakdown of society, it’s going to speed up and get a lot worse. Depressing but no point being delusional and pretending everything is fine.

You obviously do care about the woman peeing in the street in front of you or you would not have posted about it. What you believe you are entitled to isn't happening so I am suggesting that you start caring about why this issue and think about what solutions might work (burning their tents doesn't solve anything, unless you are advocating burning these people in their tents, which would be murder). As I said, perhaps the only reason why this might appeal to you is that 'these people' may encroach upon you even more if not.

Fly tippers are the most awful. Just makes the place look depressing and it's so fucking bone idle.
