To wonder why women 65+ are all determined that coffee should be mouthscaldingly hot

My mum, her friends, all the ladies

A normal temp is "cold please bring another one"

Is this an era thing or will it come for me too?

No woman over 65 that I know complains about hot coffee not being hot enough. What a batshit thread! Confused

If I heard anyone speak like that to a friend/relative/member of hospitality staff I wouldn’t drink coffee with them, so it’s probably quite a self selecting sample.

Speak like what? The request was very much polite. Why should i pay for something i can't eat or drink. Not everyone is alright with just not saying anything. If my food or drink was served cold, I'd ask for another too and i have done so in the past. I don't even eat cold food in my own home, why would i pay for it outside. Outrageous. And OP it's not a generational thing because I'm in my 30s.

Edited to say realised i got off topic. A normal temperature of coffee is not considered cold OP and i have never seen anyone consider it so either.

It’s not being “soft” to want to avoid potentially ending up needing skin grafts when you were out enjoying yourself.

How often does this really happen though?
An occasional case from someone propping a drive through takeaway cup between their legs maybe.
You have to be severely risk avoidant to decide to drink tepid coffee just in case you have such severe scalding that you need skin grafts.

Yet another ageist post 🙄

OMG
I'll be this age in like two decades which if the last two are anything to go by is the blink of an eye
Try to lighten up

You don’t see why saying ‘why do all people of x age do x thing’ is ageist?

No, it's a damn joke. My mum finds it funny. Thanks for contributing further to the heavy, leaden, humourless world we all now inhabit, though, amazing work.

One old person finds it funny so it must be hilarious 😆

I’m 71 and can’t be doing with Luke warm coffee. Has to be at that perfect temperature where it feels hot in my mouth but not so hot as to be scalding. (For reference, I always serve hot food on hot plates, warm my tea mug or the tea pot before making tea and heat the oven up to the right temperature before putting anything in it.)

It might be generational as I was brought up in a house without any central heating, just a coal fire in the main living room, so I frequently went to bed in a room the same temperature as it was outdoors. So anything hot was a real plus.

hazelnutvanillalatte · 17/01/2025 18:55

I'm 30 and hate drinks that are too hot!! If I have a drink I want to be able to drink it, not burn my tongue or sit around waiting for it to become drinkable

jannier · 17/01/2025 19:00

Maybe it's because young ones spend too long sucking on bottles and can't handle a real drink....reverse age post to balance ..

ThatGreatMember · 17/01/2025 19:05

I'm in my 40's and I despise lukewarm tea; hotter the better.

Rude

Petrine · 17/01/2025 19:08

Well OP you believe that you know what anyone aged 65 and older wants to drink… a small matter in and of itself. However, you should know that as we age don’t become a homogeneous group brought together simply due to our advanced years.

I think the pair of you might need to do a little work on your set before you’re ready for Edinburgh 😆

BobbyBiscuits · 17/01/2025 19:29

I have one mate who's around 70 who always insists on her coffee 'extra hot'. But my other friends that age aren't bothered.
I got the hump recently when I had a coffee that was just about passing for Luke warm. In cold weather it is a waste of time like that. So I can see where she's coming from.

Gettingbysomehow · 17/01/2025 21:43

We're the generation that ate those hot apple pastries at McDonalds. I'm sure they must have used uranium in those things. They could cause a third degree burns.

TheWhoBird · 17/01/2025 22:17

@Gettingbysomehow, they were crazy! Do they still make them? I'm mid thirties, so do you mean millennials or older?

Joystir59 · 17/01/2025 23:31

Dragonsandcats · 17/01/2025 09:18

My mum is the same, but always has been! Always warms plates at mealtimes too.

I always serve hot food on warmed plates

I'm not sure what era they made them up to, I'm 62 and they were about when I was growing up. They stopped making them because people sued after getting burnt.

Vannymcvan · 18/01/2025 07:31

I would expect a hot drink to be hot, yes. If you want cold coffee, order it iced. How weird you make this an age thing. I'm under 65 BTW.
Edit, because I have now seen your stampy foot post. Ageism is bigotry. Do better.

SallyWD · 18/01/2025 07:51

My mum, in her 70s, only drinks coffee when it's gone cold. My MIL likes everything to be scalding hot.

Tricho · 18/01/2025 07:54

Coffee should be 80 degrees, any hotter and it's burnt.

If you're drinking it hotter you're doing it wrong.

However, it can appear cold if you're used to boiling hot tea etc.

lilacsatin · 18/01/2025 08:01

I expect it is because they have enough life experience and chutzpah to know it is best to speak up when something is not as it should be, or to your liking - especially when you are a paying customer.

I'm not surprised, given the number of posts wittering on, complaining, but with the attitude of "Oh, I couldn't possibly say anything" that so many seem to think this behaviour is unusual and therefore generational.

Never miss an opportunity to be ageist and titter at those older than you, after all.
