My mum, her friends, all the ladies

A normal temp is "cold please bring another one"

Is this an era thing or will it come for me too?

Maybe it's about how you like to drink.

I made a coffee 9 minutes ago. Boiling water, instant coffee, cold milk. It's currently drinkable in small sips. Anything more would hurt my throat. But I prefer bigger mouthful so still waiting.

Do the Vesuvius hot drinkers prefer smaller sips?

Boomers are obsessed with such odd stuff, namely how hot food is, and celebrating wedding anniversaries. It's perplexing.

It's brilliant being a boomer. It really is. Rubs hands with glee.

I can't drink things like Starbucks for around 15 minutes after buying as they are too hot. Growing up I was always taught to wait for both food and drink to cool down and it's stuck. Hot plates are pointless as you can't hold them and it prevents your food cooling to eating temperature.

Why are you holding your plate? It’s on the table! Or do you just mean to carry it to the table?
I like hot food and drinks to be properly hot, and have even been known to reheat soup mid meal if something (a child usually!) has distracted me and it’s cooled too much.

AlteredStater · 17/01/2025 11:38

I bet you also heat your dinner plates don't you? Go on, admit it, it's a safe space!

Wait, what? People don't heat their dinner plates??!!

Wonderi · 17/01/2025 11:40

I’m half that age and like mine scolding hot.

When it’s hot, you can always leave it to cool down.

If it’s not hot enough then you have to drink it fast else it’s way too cold.

Hell no. I want ny food to cool down ASAP so I can actually eat it. Heated plates can get in the sea.

Maybe because we didn’t have central heating and were permanently cold. Especially if you lived in an area of the country where it is damp and cold

Just read a thread (not on here) about how 0 or -1 degrees in Northern England feels colder than -15 in other cold climates

People thinking they would come to England and it would be so much warmer than their -15 degrees where you have to dress for the weather home country. But once here, despite all their insulated clothing they have never felt cold like it.

FWIW I come from an area where very young children were given tea or coffee in their bottle to keep them warm

I too remember poking the iced top of the milk bottle at school and wondering how you could drink this glass covered milk lollipop

I’ve also never warmed my plate and don’t know anyone who does.

If I warm food up in a microwave, I will then transfer it to a new, cold plate.

OMG 😆 Brilliant!

I’m so glad that someone under 40 invented these new fangled computer things. Spreadsheets make it so much easier to keep track of all of it. Can also use them to keep notes on whose curtains are shut after 9am and get it on Facebook.

Happyher · 17/01/2025 11:47

I’m 66 and like milky coffee so I haven’t transitioned! My friend, same age likes her tea with very little milk in!

SwallowsAmazons · 17/01/2025 11:53

I like mine as hot as possible as I drink it slowly and it gets cold before I finish it.

Maddy70 · 17/01/2025 11:54

Noting to do with age. If my coffee isn't piping hot I don't want it

Lemonyyy · 17/01/2025 11:54

I am mid thirties and I like my tea to arrive too hot to drink, otherwise it'll be stone cold by the time it's finished! Unlike my son, who likes it to arrive at a chuggable temperature 😂But I don't really buy it from coffee shops so it's mainly just my husband who has to make sure it's the right temperature.

I heat my dinner plates....apparently I am 35 and a secret boomer 😆

One can always rely on MN for pure ageism.

The last bastion of prejudice of women against women.

User09678 · 17/01/2025 11:16

Skimmed through the first and last page of this thread and really it makes no sense to talk about temperatures without an objective standard. My favourite tea temperature is 52 degrees Celsius, but I would prefer it to arrive slightly hotter. We should all have temperature probes because then when we do complain it will be on a more valid basis.

hahaha I was just thinking if it would be reasonable to get a small discreet temperature probe and gather some data. I think yes.

tippytoesy · 17/01/2025 11:57

'I bet you also heat your dinner plates don't you? Go on, admit it, it's a safe space!'

Ha Ha, yes, even if we're eating salad (which is highly uncommon in my house!) :)

Huckyfell · 17/01/2025 11:58

Coffee burns if you serve it too hot, gives a bitter and acidy aftertaste. I guess the ones in the older generation maybe tend to drink instant coffee so it doesn't matter so much, but with beans or ground to get the best flavour it needs to be 90c ish, max 93.

Hwi · 17/01/2025 11:59

Nowhere near this age, so hope I shall make it to this age, but absolutely love scolding hot everything, otherwise it feels like dishwater.

DurhamDurham · 17/01/2025 11:59

I hate cold plates for hot food and I cannot stand coffee which isn't v hot. When I'm offered coffee from a cafetière, using in a restaurant, it's never hot enough. Warm coffee is the pits.

54 years old but I've had the same opinion since being an adult so definitely not an age thing for me.

SnarkSideOfLife · 17/01/2025 12:01

My friends always ask for their coffee “extra hot”. Surely it comes out the coffee machine at the temp it comes out?

genesis92 · 17/01/2025 12:02

I'm 33 and like an extra hot coffee 😂

Most of the chains like Costa and Nero serve coffee at adequate temperature so never have to ask. Most of the independent coffee shops seem to serve coffee tepid. It's annoying cause I want my coffee to remain hot longer than 3 seconds. Especially when you're paying around £4 these days for one!

I have a double walled stainless steel cafetiere jug, it keeps the coffee nice and hot.
