To wonder why women 65+ are all determined that coffee should be mouthscaldingly hot

My mum, her friends, all the ladies

A normal temp is "cold please bring another one"

Is this an era thing or will it come for me too?

Boomers are obsessed with such odd stuff, namely how hot food is, and celebrating wedding anniversaries. It's perplexing.

And yet the OP, who doesn't seem like she's identifying as a Boomer, has started this thread while us Boomers are just getting on drinking our drinks the way we like them. Who was it that was obsessed?

jannier · 17/01/2025 12:05

I think it's more to do with being busy I hardly ever get to sit and drink a coffee in one go so do be drinkable in 15 mins it needs to start really hot.

Greyish2025 · 17/01/2025 12:06

Mabelface · 17/01/2025 09:17

I like mine scalding hot in my fifties so it doesn't get cold too quickly

Exactly, if you are not thinking of gulping it down in a few minutes it needs to be very hot in the first place otherwise it’s going to be cold in no time

Brefugee · 17/01/2025 12:09

Huckyfell · 17/01/2025 11:58

Coffee burns if you serve it too hot, gives a bitter and acidy aftertaste. I guess the ones in the older generation maybe tend to drink instant coffee so it doesn't matter so much, but with beans or ground to get the best flavour it needs to be 90c ish, max 93.
From a coffee roaster.

93° is fine. I would bet my house on me never getting a coffee from a shop (unless i order black filter coffee) anywhere approaching that.

I may get a temperature probe because I'm invested now.

FWIW I'm a Gen Xer (the oldest possible) and i never drank instant coffee growing up. Percolated or done on the stovetop. And always black. Like my tea: black tea poured when the water reaches a rolling boil (never reboil) and green at 80°C (I use a sugar thermometer to check it, i am fussy)

I was at boarding school then in the army - there is no time to faff about letting your tea cool - you sling it down so you get time for a 2nd before rushing off to the next thing. Cool coffee with milk is like drinking a cup of sick.

KimberleyClark · 17/01/2025 10:58

I agree. Late FIL was very fussy about plates being heated. It is a thing otherwise why do I have a plate warming setting on my oven?

If you have a four oven Aga, one of them is specifically for that purpose.

What about us older ladies that enjoy iced lattes? :-)

Joyfulspringflowers · 17/01/2025 09:20

Why turn this into yet another ageist thing?
Surely it's about personal preferences and nothing to do with age?

Exactly. Ridiculous generalisation.

ZeldaFighter · 17/01/2025 12:21

Because it should be!

It can cool down but not heat up!

I am in my 50s. I did burn my mouth on microwaved soup yesterday though so I'm not entirely unsympathetic.

Stepfordian · 17/01/2025 12:21

My mum is 65+ and she always scoops up my coffee cup and cleans it up before I’m finished because she can’t understand the concept of drinking anything less than scalding hot and I prefer to let mine cool down to likewarm before I drink it.

BeardofHagrid · 17/01/2025 12:21

This reminds me of my grandparents who would pour boiling water onto their coffee and immediately drink it, black. I know they had dentures but jeeeeeez, I don’t know how they did it.

PrincessofWells · 17/01/2025 12:21

Misogyny and ageism in the same thread. How novel.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 17/01/2025 12:22

Can't quite work out whether OP is
a) a goady fucker
b) ageist
c) can't stand her mother, or
d) makes crap coffee.

ThatMerryReader · 17/01/2025 12:24

What on earth are you on about OP ? Knowing three over 65's doesn't really justify such a sweeping generalisation.

Take a step back and think.

Sahara123 · 17/01/2025 12:29

I’m almost 65 and like my drinks at a drinkable temperature, not nuclear. And was brought up in a family where instant coffee never darkened our door. My dad ground beans and used a Cona thing which I was always fascinated by, the water kind of bubbled up and then down through the coffee. The smell was incredible

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 17/01/2025 12:32

I think you might be generalising from a sample without statistical significance, but I may have an answer... It's because back in the day, coffee was made with a kettle of boiling water and heated on the stove or brewed for a short time in a jug or in a cafetiere or whatever. So it was hot rather than warm. Nowadays coffee made in certain (not all) modern machines is noticeably cooler than that and some outlets insist that it ought to be.
I'm close to your mum's demographic and stopped using a local cafe because they point blank refused to serve hot coffee. I just don't like it lukewarm.

User09678 · 17/01/2025 12:36

Talipesmum · 17/01/2025 11:56

hahaha I was just thinking if it would be reasonable to get a small discreet temperature probe and gather some data. I think yes.

I think I'm genuinely tempted to do this! I'm so curious

Cantbebotheredwithausername · 17/01/2025 12:37

I'm 36.

I prefer my coffee with lots of milk and as warm as possible! Which don't go well together unless you use a microwave or a really effective milk foamer.

Can I have one from each row please Bob?

(crones also only watch re-runs of tea time quiz shows while drinking their coffee)

outdooryone · 17/01/2025 12:52

Turned 50 last year.
I have started pre-warming my coffee mug for pour over or even the office cafetierre...
Sorry OP.

Brefugee · 17/01/2025 12:54

one of my main takeaways from this is that there are honestly people who think it is rude to return a substandard thing that you have ordered and ask for it to be delivered back to you in the correct condition.

There is zero indication in OPs post, or other subsequent posts, that people are screeching at a totally cowed Barista "get me a fucking hot coffee stat!" rather than "this isn't hot enough, please warm it up"

Indeed one pp has overheard a conversation about how to bring this up to the waiter/server "without offending them". That is batshit. The menus say "hot drinks" and if you get one that doesn't meet your expectations, absent shouting etc, the server should be more than happy to rectify that. In fact, this is the most bonkers thing about the thread. (because, sigh, the agesim & misogyny is standard these days)

Alondra · 17/01/2025 13:02

ilovesooty · 17/01/2025 12:19

Exactly. Ridiculous generalisation.

I genuinely don't get the OP generalisation. My youngest son likes his coffee scalding hot, I don't

How people like a coffee or tea is a preference. Very hot, not so hot, with cow's milk, soy, almond, No milk. Sugar, no sugar. Why on earth make a drink's preference about age?

It's ridiculous.

TypingoftheDead · 17/01/2025 14:30

FumingTRex · 17/01/2025 09:40

The younger generation have been softened up by coffee shops like Starbucks, who make their drinks lukewarm because they are scared of being sued if someone burns themselves.

It’s not being “soft” to want to avoid potentially ending up needing skin grafts when you were out enjoying yourself.

Katemax82 · 17/01/2025 14:59

Those who get trained properly to make batista coffee are told not to heat the milk over 140f...why do so many people struggle with this? It should be a public announcement. If you want really hot coffee have Americans or filter
