To be completely shocked by this - Bridget can’t tell us the impact of the government’s VAT on Education?

Bridget Phillipson dodges question on impact of private school tax raid

As parents and schools complain of chaos, Ms Phillipson refuses to spell out details of the assessment made by the department for education

Bridget Phillipson failed to spell out the full impact of the government’s private school VAT raid, dodging the question when asked about the possible implications for special education schools.

While she said the government has “looked at all of the potential impacts”, her answer failed to provide any real detail on the expected consequences.

It comes as parents and schools complain about the implications of the tax raid, which came into force on New Year’s Day and is expected to raise £1.5bn for the Treasury.

YABU - Bridget Phillipson has it all in hand. She just didn’t feel like answering the pesky question. The point is to piss rich people off. Leave Labour alone, they want nothing but erm oh I’m not sure.

YANBU - Phillipson clearly has no idea what the impact of VAT on Education will be. Nor does she really care as long as she’s seen to be punishing those horrible rich people. Or even better (it seems) the not really rich ones just trying to improve the education of their children as the available state schools were not suitable.

(sorry paywall but there’s not much more in the article)

PS. I’ve removed the poll tally, no one needs to see real data. Do they?

Where did I say my preference was something which would be reportable if people didn't follow it?

Sorry I was replying to the post you replied to.

How many of those 100,000 with additional needs are actually severe enough to be entitled to anything extra if in state education? How many are getting serious additional support in the private sector?
I suspect 99% have something like dyslexia or dyspraxia and the state system won’t do anything extra for them at all. Rather than needing a 1-1 TA.

Councils spending £2bn to send special needs pupils to private schools

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) found spending has increased by 46 per cent in just four years, highlighting the state's 'reliance' on private schools.

Of course 😂

Well you were being sexist! Trying to get Bridget Philipson off the hook for being rubbish by arguing we shouldn't criticise her as she's a woman. Women have fought for decades to be considered on equal terms as men. Let's not start undermining us all now.

TankFlyBossW4lk · 15/01/2025 19:56

@AgathaPanthus
I agree. I feel so sad about the state Brexit has left us in. I really want to rejoin the EU. Especially now when the US is going to be governed by Nationalists. We are even more vulnerable.

I hate all this Labour bashing in the press and on X and MN. We've had 14 years of non government. When we actually get educated, honest people who are doing their best in very difficult circumstances in power, the right wing press denigrates them within 6 months and says we need the Idiot Racist Farage instead. Fgs. I despair. And cue MN saying Elon and Farage have "got a good point"🙄

Letlooseonthedanse · 15/01/2025 19:56

‘Wealthy people moaning about actually paying the tax that they should do.
Quelle surprise Rodney’

The reason they’re so noisy is because they’re use to always getting their way with money, connections or privilege and are INCANDESCENT with rage that Labour have stuck to their guns.

You should check out some of the SM groups about this - everything from calling Labour ‘commies’ to threatening to get all the little George’s and Charlotte’s in their boaters and blazers to march on Whitehall.
And don’t get me started on the ones crying that paying their tax - finally- in fees is a breach of human rights

I'm not terribly sympathetic to parents who chose to send their children to private school. Whatever luxuries you give up to afford it the fact remains that after your essential living expenses are covered you still have £20k + to spend on private education. You may not be or feel rich but you are not poor either.

However I am interested in whether this policy actually generates revenue or costs the tax payer money. It won't "level the playing field" because parents who can't afford school fees plus vat will simply send their children to state school and spend the school fees money on private tutors.

Asking if Labour have done the sums is not unreasonable.

Letlooseonthedanse · 15/01/2025 19:57

It‘s JUST been implemented. It’ll take a couple of years to see the real impact.

TankFlyBossW4lk · 15/01/2025 19:58

Oh ok then. Hope you said the same about Boris at some point.

Tbh, if you can't afford 20% extra on your school fees, you can't afford private school. Hth

Bigoted? I am a ‘Commie’ too 🤣
Will no-one think of the families in the top 10% of earners???
It SO unfair. Private kids being discriminated against! Who will stand up for them.

LifedestroyerifYOUletthem · 15/01/2025 20:02

@Letlooseonthedanse yes, if they had actually talked sense about what the actual issues are but they have not.

Luckily it seems you are not a parent to a child who doesn't fit conformity

Those of us who are know how henious this is.
My dc are not even in private school but we have had to supplement with tutors and my dc have mild sen. The system could not cope with mild sen and were bottom of the class

It's absolutely terrifying and thankfully I was able to pay.

You would have thought there would have been some research into the possible impact though surely. And didn't she also say that the VAT raised would pay for a specific amount of teachers. And yet has not ring-fenced the money and apparently there is some £22billion black hole to fill up first. It all seems a little bit like bait for the election and now she's having to actually do it, it turns out not to be the great hope for the country's education finances that she claimed. And actually will probably end up costing money.

And create a huge burden for the taxpayer. It is literally turkeys voting for Christmas.

I doubt anyone voted on the grounds of this specific policy. It was only a very marginal one in the manifesto. There were much bigger issues to vote upon.It is a very niche policy.

Says who? How do you know how much or how little people can afford? 20% on top of fees per child is a huge increase. Particularly now we are all being shafted due to Rachel Reed's horrendous budget. Unless you are a public sector worker...perhaps a wealthy train driver. Then the 20% won't make a difference, you are right.
