To be completely shocked by this - Bridget can’t tell us the impact of the government’s VAT on Education?

Bridget Phillipson dodges question on impact of private school tax raid

As parents and schools complain of chaos, Ms Phillipson refuses to spell out details of the assessment made by the department for education

Bridget Phillipson failed to spell out the full impact of the government’s private school VAT raid, dodging the question when asked about the possible implications for special education schools.

While she said the government has “looked at all of the potential impacts”, her answer failed to provide any real detail on the expected consequences.

It comes as parents and schools complain about the implications of the tax raid, which came into force on New Year’s Day and is expected to raise £1.5bn for the Treasury.

YABU - Bridget Phillipson has it all in hand. She just didn’t feel like answering the pesky question. The point is to piss rich people off. Leave Labour alone, they want nothing but erm oh I’m not sure.

YANBU - Phillipson clearly has no idea what the impact of VAT on Education will be. Nor does she really care as long as she’s seen to be punishing those horrible rich people. Or even better (it seems) the not really rich ones just trying to improve the education of their children as the available state schools were not suitable.

(sorry paywall but there’s not much more in the article)

PS. I’ve removed the poll tally, no one needs to see real data. Do they?

Wealthy people moaning about actually paying the tax that they should do.

Quelle surprise Rodney

I'd like to know how much taxpayers are going to be on the hook for. Labour have intentionally taken on the financial commitment of educating thousands of children that hitherto were being educated for free (from the taxpayers perspective). If anyone pays tax on this thread they should be keeping tabs on this government's activities.

Hoppingabout · 15/01/2025 19:20

Cringe away, Challah. Keir and Bridge don't care two hoots what you think!! Unless you are a member of a trade union in the public sector such as a train driver.

The bottom line is that it will cost money rather than raise money. It is not a revenue raiser, it's a revenue drain. At least Bridge should be honest and say "the UK is going to spend £X amount on the policy of charging VAT on education and we will have to raise taxes accordingly"

Unfortunate Bridge has not ring fenced any money raised to go into education either. As the policy will cost money (educating kids that previously were educated for free; reimbursing Eton etc re capital expenditure) things like Latin will no longer be taught and less money spent on modern languages in the state sector.

It's seems like Bridget can't do her sums...

Undoubtedly that’s why she’s a high ranking government minister with a team of experienced and expert staff behind her. She’s just a bit thick.

When you post like that, you don’t make me feel small. But you diminish all women.

echt · 15/01/2025 19:31

I know! And despite all the questions they’ve had to date, Labour STILL they haven’t specified any research or costs/ benefit analysis to support their policy

They don't need to. Private schools are a business. End of.

LifedestroyerifYOUletthem · 15/01/2025 19:32

Yes but many children are in private school because the state system cannot effectively and across the board cope with any sen at all, even mild sen

LifedestroyerifYOUletthem · 15/01/2025 19:33

Infact I wonder what would happen if the parents who have had to remove dc with sen and pay to get them educated, sue the government??

If I hadn't paid for my dc with mild sen to be tutored in a subject she would be failing. I had to pay to keep her up to date and plug the gaps.

Absolutely nothing, "nothing" to do with with funding it was pure ignorance.

Nothing. Nothing would happen.

She's a spiteful ideologue pushing a failing policy that wrecks British children's education onto taxpayers with no impact assessment. Dont pretend the front bench is stuffed with geniuses. If you pay tax don't you want to know how much more you will be on the hook for and why?

And don't lump all women into a collective. We are not responsible for the failings of other women and they don't get let off the hook because of their sex. That's sexist.

They are. 1 of the legal challenges is from 3 parents of SEN kids. If they win then it opens the door to compensation

It's going to cost taxpayers money. And I'd quite like to know how much. We need to keep an eye on this profligate Labour government.

I'd be much more interested in the true cost of Brexit. That would eclipse the fallout of this niche policy.

LifedestroyerifYOUletthem · 15/01/2025 19:35

Good then I'll try and sue and get some money back.

We have a modest income..
We don't go in flash package holidays or have new cars etc.

But thank goodness we could pay for this help. God knows what happens to students who can't

Didn’t you feel like reading my full post before you started your diatribe?

Plenty feel like you. Plenty want to see female politicians put in their place. Look at Mr Musk. It’s tedious and depressing but not surprising

" female politician put in their place?" from the party of the pink bus, the party that doesn't even know or care what a woman is, the party with 0 female leader ever 😳.
Really??

I did read your whole post. I was not impressed with your sexist attitude I'm afraid. Trying to lump all women into one box.

Can we please stop referring to female members of the government by their first name? I get that a lot of people don't like Labour, but stop it with the misogyny.

I'd like people to stop referring to politicians by their first names full stop. It seems to have started with Johnson.

I have 2 kids in private school. This has made a huge difference to my outgoings each term. I still think it was an appropriate thing to tax. Private education is a luxury. It should be taxed.

You could ask your school to reduce supported places for state school kids and partnerships with state schools if you feel that aggrieved about it. See if that will save them any cash to reimburse you some fees. I bet it won't though.

True cost of Brexit was hundreds of billions in lost trade, for absolutely ZERO benefit.

Putin was happy though, and the “patriots” got to feel good for a minute. Until they looked around themselves at the country and failed to put two and two together….

And here we are!

Many schools are reducing fee assistance eg bursaries and scholarships ie only awarding to existing pupils now.

Lucky you able to afford the extra 20%.x 2.on fees.
