To be completely shocked by this - Bridget can’t tell us the impact of the government’s VAT on Education?

Bridget Phillipson dodges question on impact of private school tax raid

As parents and schools complain of chaos, Ms Phillipson refuses to spell out details of the assessment made by the department for education

Bridget Phillipson failed to spell out the full impact of the government’s private school VAT raid, dodging the question when asked about the possible implications for special education schools.

While she said the government has “looked at all of the potential impacts”, her answer failed to provide any real detail on the expected consequences.

It comes as parents and schools complain about the implications of the tax raid, which came into force on New Year’s Day and is expected to raise £1.5bn for the Treasury.

YABU - Bridget Phillipson has it all in hand. She just didn’t feel like answering the pesky question. The point is to piss rich people off. Leave Labour alone, they want nothing but erm oh I’m not sure.

YANBU - Phillipson clearly has no idea what the impact of VAT on Education will be. Nor does she really care as long as she’s seen to be punishing those horrible rich people. Or even better (it seems) the not really rich ones just trying to improve the education of their children as the available state schools were not suitable.

(sorry paywall but there’s not much more in the article)

PS. I’ve removed the poll tally, no one needs to see real data. Do they?

It was easy to go to Europe, never so easy to go to US, Canada, Australia etc. Surely nobody can be so naive.

Out of interest, pre-Brexit, how "easy" would it have been for your doctor dc to practise medicine in, say France, compared to Australia? Which modern foreign languages are they fluent in?

I was talking generally when I made the quoted comment, not about medics.

In the good old days I went from the UK to MBA post grad studies in France and progressed to investment banking roles there. Property purchase etc. was not an issue. I had also studied and worked in Spain as an undergraduate and even got some funding for it. I think the end of Erasmus is very sad.

I think traditionally doctors have migrated more to Commonwealth countries rather than Europe. My medic DC is fluent in both French and Spanish.

I don’t think it’s possible to assess the full impact straight away. I don’t think it will raise the money Labour thinks it will, or that the money will be passed to fund state education. She didn’t answer the question because she simply doesn’t know.

i am surprised that SEN schools have not been protected in some way. The state provision is woefully inadequate, so I wonder how they propose supporting those children?

For us the increase makes little difference. Our children will continue to be privately educated as will the majority of their peers.

I think we will start to see fewer parents going private in the junior years and far more pressure on state primaries as well as more competition for places in Grammar schools. It will become much harder for people to access good schools. Money will continue to talk, just in a different way.

I think this is a fair assessment of the impact it will have- very pragmatic.

My daughter is in an international school in the EU where VAT can not be applied to education. I am so grateful we can afford this for her as the provision is state schools in the UK seems shocking and home schooling would have been our chosen route if we couldn’t afford fees if we had stayed in the UK.

We were talking about well paid jobs.

Odd you think they would choose Australia then.

I think traditionally doctors have migrated more to Commonwealth countries rather than Europe.

Presumably that's because most of them don't speak a foreign language.

Is investment banking in Paris not well enough paid for you?!

Why would it be odd to choose Australia when the Australians are actively recruiting doctors from the UK. They are delighted to have them and it is a well trodden path now.

Clearly not enough for you as you felt the need to mention your student job in Spain.

“So pray tell me why hasn't there been a mass exodus of young people under the shit show that was the last 14 years of Tory government? None of you seems to be able to answer that question.”

I think I can answer that one. Firstly, plenty of people I know did leave after Brexit. Then Covid hit and some people were sticking around for things to get better after Covid. To most people, it really does not matter who is in power whether Tory or Labour, they think they are largely cast from the same mould and have been waiting for things to change. Just general denial about the steady decline in quality of life for the majority of the country, by that I mean, more crime, dirtier streets, very difficult to access health service (and who actually wants to die on a trolley with not much dignity, bun fight for education, potholes, lack of positivity, general selfishness, angry drivers etc the list goes on and on
Now if I were a private school parent, this education tax would have been a red line for me and I would have left out of principle. I have promised myself we are all leaving immediately if Reform wins the next election.

I didn't have a student job in Spain. I was a full time student! FWIW I also worked in Madrid (and Latin America) in my thirties on an even better salary than I had in Paris.

Your dc doctor is fluent in French and Spanish - why not apply to work in France or Spain?

EasternStandard · 16/01/2025 20:17

As for what influences young people to move it’s not always the same variables as older generations

Eg on here you get a lot of pro higher tax posts, either from public sector, state dependent or at a stage where NHS is more in mind

Being tax competitive for someone who is young can be a draw. The burden of shifting all that 50 hour corridor issue or immense looming social care cost is too much

Then you have other countries offering better tax rates, and it’s a draw.

Not everyone obviously but a factor for some

Once again, they (personally) want to work in the UK. If they can't, which is likely, they will go to Australia as there is a big recruitment programme there for UK doctors. Just because you speak a language doesn't mean you want to live somewhere.

Some of their non-medic friends would be interested in working/living in Europe at least for a while but it is much harder now and they resent that.

I hope this explains what you need as the thread is about VAT on school fees!

Araminta1003 · 16/01/2025 20:23

The children of adults who travelled and emigrated are most likely to follow in their footsteps. Need not be to similar countries but having a family culture of being an intrepid voyager is surely rather catching.

It follows, quite logically, that if the demographic of British private schools is quite heavily populated by the above demographic, there is a not insignificant flight risk.

The other poster is 'tetchy' (to quote you) and quite rude - e.g. she posted;
'What an original thread OP (yawn)'. However, I don't believe I am picking on anybody.

Christ, not sure I’ve ever read anything so pompous 🤣
You know who else are ‘intrepid voyagers’? Economic migrants. The world is full of poor and WC children who left their home countries for better economic prospects. it’s why so many people Around the world are entitled to Irish passports!
’flight risk’ 😅😅😅😅😅

Don’t forget this is someone who has never had a real job in her entire life. And now she’s landed the education gig.

She is so bad that only her own mother would employ her. That too, in a charity. Nepo baby in a Mickey Mouse job.

Education was about the only thing the Tories actually got some good results in. And this clown will ruin that too.

This is libellous. She worked in local government and then ran a women’s refuge. That looks like a real job from where I’m sitting.
