To be completely shocked by this - Bridget can’t tell us the impact of the government’s VAT on Education?

Bridget Phillipson dodges question on impact of private school tax raid

As parents and schools complain of chaos, Ms Phillipson refuses to spell out details of the assessment made by the department for education

Bridget Phillipson failed to spell out the full impact of the government’s private school VAT raid, dodging the question when asked about the possible implications for special education schools.

While she said the government has “looked at all of the potential impacts”, her answer failed to provide any real detail on the expected consequences.

It comes as parents and schools complain about the implications of the tax raid, which came into force on New Year’s Day and is expected to raise £1.5bn for the Treasury.

YABU - Bridget Phillipson has it all in hand. She just didn’t feel like answering the pesky question. The point is to piss rich people off. Leave Labour alone, they want nothing but erm oh I’m not sure.

YANBU - Phillipson clearly has no idea what the impact of VAT on Education will be. Nor does she really care as long as she’s seen to be punishing those horrible rich people. Or even better (it seems) the not really rich ones just trying to improve the education of their children as the available state schools were not suitable.

(sorry paywall but there’s not much more in the article)

PS. I’ve removed the poll tally, no one needs to see real data. Do they?

Well your views seem very embittered and a bit hysterical.

I am not worried about any of my DC. They will all be absolutely fine. More hyperbole?

I'm happy your DC are doing so well and are in good secure employment. Or are aiming to be employed by the State. Long may it continue for them.

Hoppingabout · 16/01/2025 18:12

BIossomtoes · 16/01/2025 18:09

Exactly. Nobody’s personal tax or job security has changed in the last six months. It’s preposterous. In a way these posts are self defeating because they can’t be taken seriously.

Usually I think your points have some.basis in some small reality however much I disagree with them. But in this case the words "sand" "head: and "ostrich" come to mind.

EasternStandard · 16/01/2025 18:12

The private sector contracting will already be impacting jobs

Labour are blind to this one so far as they're not great at understanding private over public sector

That sounds like it is said through gritted teeth. Aiming to be employed by the State? Are you trying to cast shade on my doctor DC? Yes, with their intellect they should've been a quant instead shouldn't they.

Exactly. Anyone arguing nothing has changed since July on the jobs front (particularly the part time jobs young people might aim for to earn money or get work experience) is either public sector and cushioned or not looking outside of their own bubble.

You still haven't commented on the sh*t show of the previous 14 years? Do you really believe the mess we are in is as a result of the last six months?

Yep many Labour public sector posts. It takes growth of the private sector though which is why there could be cuts soon.

Fair play to them! Well done ...they won't need to give this another thought. Absolutely fantastic benefits and pension in later life so they really are sorted. You probably don't need to carry on with this argument as they have done brilliantly.

Not gritted teeth. I never begrudge other people's success.

Yes of course I do! I do read a newspaper occasionally. We have a socialist idealogical government where pretty much every decision they make is wrong which is born out by their approval ratings as most other people in the country also agree. Only.a few diehards still think Starmerism is good for the UK.

Yes they have done brilliantly and will make a fantastic doctor. Doesn't mean they will even have a job in the UK after F2, never mind benefits and a pension later in life. Can I suggest you actually educate yourself on this situation rather than spouting about something that you clearly know absolutely nothing about.

Yes. The media are always complaining about the surfeit of doctors in the UK.

Telegraph and Spectator naturally.

Why? Do you find that you lose your ability to process and question information once you've finished reading the Daily Mail?

EasternStandard · 16/01/2025 18:30

All these digs etc are because of the discussion re dc leaving

Why argue over it so much?

Of course young people still go and are mobile

I agree it’s a ridiculous situation to uni educate and train at a 100000s cost and then not guarantee a job at the end of it.
And then when they run off to OZ, there is outcry in the Daily Mail that they should repay the cost of their education and training.

Things in this country really need to be better organised. Perhaps the private health sector should get involved in training somehow. Given that is the current answer.

Yes some of them do go. Like they always did. There is not going to be some mass exodus. THAT was the point.

I find the Daily Mail's battle cry on this as shameful as most of its other reporting.
The vast majority of these talented young people actively want to work in the NHS. The UK doesn't want them but Australia certainly does. And why wouldn't they? It's the rest of us that will suffer when we need healthcare down the line.

Clavinova · 16/01/2025 19:23

It was easy to go to Europe, never so easy to go to US, Canada, Australia etc. Surely nobody can be so naive.

Out of interest, pre-Brexit, how "easy" would it have been for your doctor dc to practise medicine in, say France, compared to Australia? Which modern foreign languages are they fluent in?

Letlooseonthedanse · 16/01/2025 19:45

‘, there is outcry in the Daily Mail that they should ’

There’s not much there isn’t an ‘outcry’ about in the Daily Mail. They get their revenue from their click bait outraged articles. Wouldn’t put much store in them.
