To be completely shocked by this - Bridget can’t tell us the impact of the government’s VAT on Education?

Bridget Phillipson dodges question on impact of private school tax raid

As parents and schools complain of chaos, Ms Phillipson refuses to spell out details of the assessment made by the department for education

Bridget Phillipson failed to spell out the full impact of the government’s private school VAT raid, dodging the question when asked about the possible implications for special education schools.

While she said the government has “looked at all of the potential impacts”, her answer failed to provide any real detail on the expected consequences.

It comes as parents and schools complain about the implications of the tax raid, which came into force on New Year’s Day and is expected to raise £1.5bn for the Treasury.

YABU - Bridget Phillipson has it all in hand. She just didn’t feel like answering the pesky question. The point is to piss rich people off. Leave Labour alone, they want nothing but erm oh I’m not sure.

YANBU - Phillipson clearly has no idea what the impact of VAT on Education will be. Nor does she really care as long as she’s seen to be punishing those horrible rich people. Or even better (it seems) the not really rich ones just trying to improve the education of their children as the available state schools were not suitable.

(sorry paywall but there’s not much more in the article)

PS. I’ve removed the poll tally, no one needs to see real data. Do they?

We are encouraging DD to look abroad for uni + careers

Not surprised. We are in slightly the same boat childwise. I would be devastated but wouldn't blame any of them.

I have I can’t see anyone called a troll on this thread

As for targeting other SM I agree with @twistyizzy

Does this help?

"What sort of person trolls a SM page about a subject that they disagree with and then goes on another SM page to slag those people off?
You are slagging off parents who have genuine concerns about their children. Wtf has the world come to when parents attack other parents for being worried about, and taking a stand for, their own kids?! Especially on a bloody parenting site!
Your post says a lot about you as a person."

The UK is currently poorer as a country than the poorest state in US. Why the hell would any young people want to stay here?

Hope you’ve got deep pockets for the university, it’s not cheap even for EU passport holders in the EU or if you have, say a US passport and want your kids to go there. UK looks like a bargain in comparison.
Still, young people have for a very long time travelled. Worked in other countries, studied abroad. It’s hardly new. I went to Uni outside of my country, lived and worked in other countries. It’s not a new thing.
Our young people should be encouraged to go where they find opportunities or where their interests lie. Just as the U.K. has 100s of nationalities living, studying and working here.

Calling someone a troll is breaking talk guidelines. Having a different point of view is allowed anywhere in the forum, not just in AIBU. You seem to have very different standards depending on what you say and what you think is okay to say to you. It is very funny.

You clearly haven’t been to Kentucky/Mississippi/Louisiana/New Mexico/ the rust belt etc recently. If you think THEIR standard of living is better than in the U.K. you’re sorely mistaken.
And yes, I have been there…

Where were all the tears over the last 3 years when private schools have been upping their fee's by 20% above inflation on average.

If anyone dared to complain they were told to suck it up or use the local state as they couldn't live beyond their means "like the rest of us"

So those people probably support this too, but it isn't improving their kid's education by dragging down the kids who get the best. If the gov wanted to do that they'd emulate private schools and prioritise spending on good teacher training, wages, SEN support and fixing the buildings for starters. This is smoke and mirrors to distract from the lack of all of that and falling standards.

Although reciprocal youth mobility schemes with countries such as Australia, New Zealand and Canada have been updated since Brexit (2023) - extending the age limit from 30 to 35 (inclusive) and adding an extra year to the visa.

@AgathaPanthus you say your dc are annoyed about Brexit why wouldn’t they look
to another scheme?

Are you sure they’re aware of where they can go? It’s really not just Drs going

Oh it doesn't affect us at all. I have a (almost) doctor DC. They are already planning on having to go to Australia as the NHS is such a mess and there is a good chance they won't get a job. I have another studying in a US Ivy on a full ride.I suspect they might stay. I appreciate that it is not so straightforward for all DC.

Araminta1003 · 16/01/2025 16:30

“I have another studying in a US Ivy on a full ride.”

I hope your DC is very grateful for this opportunity @AgathaPanthus That would have been a donation by a rich benefactor, most likely.
If you argue against private schools here, you are depriving children of bursaries. I find that quite hypocritical, if your own DC has benefitted from a similar scheme.

Araminta1003 · 16/01/2025 16:31

And my own DS is going to MIT, also all paid for. I tell him every day to practise gratitude! It is very important. I also tell him that I hope he will own day be able to give back something to that effect, if he can.

So you do have two dc who are leaving / left

Why so much disbelief about other dc doing the same earlier?

It sounded like they were stuck annoyed about Brexit in your earlier posts.

So you think all DC have medical and US Ivy League degrees? I know my DC's particular circumstances make it possible for them as well as our ability to help them with any funding they may need. Try going to the US or even Australia without that level of privilege. They are not the norm.

I mean look at this.

Your dc are part of the exodus and you refuted another thread of others doing the same

EasternStandard · 16/01/2025 17:01

And other posts going on about only Drs able to go

Clearly not the case, people do just argue even if their own personal situation backs up what pp are saying

Letlooseonthedanse · 16/01/2025 17:03

In a global world people are going to move around. I live here. I’m not from here. DP isn’t British.
There are lots of private school parents claiming they’re off to UAE and the like - human rights obvs less important than saving a few quid in tax - and they have the mobility to do so. I doubt that anyone looking at Dubai as a good option would be missed anyway.

I reckon quite a few will be back pretty sharpish once the reality hits…

Actually, Oz and NZ are pretty easy to get into if you’re under a certain age… no specialty visas needed. I did it, WC, no money, no family help - just under 30’and willing to work. And I genuinely hope our DCs take the opportunity to do some thing similar .

What nonsense. Why is it so difficult for you to understand?

My DC will be going as a qualified doctor if they can't get a job in the NHS. I said doctors were going abroad in significant numbers.

The other DC is a clear outlier by both academic and sporting criteria.
