To be completely shocked by this - Bridget can’t tell us the impact of the government’s VAT on Education?

Bridget Phillipson dodges question on impact of private school tax raid

As parents and schools complain of chaos, Ms Phillipson refuses to spell out details of the assessment made by the department for education

Bridget Phillipson failed to spell out the full impact of the government’s private school VAT raid, dodging the question when asked about the possible implications for special education schools.

While she said the government has “looked at all of the potential impacts”, her answer failed to provide any real detail on the expected consequences.

It comes as parents and schools complain about the implications of the tax raid, which came into force on New Year’s Day and is expected to raise £1.5bn for the Treasury.

YABU - Bridget Phillipson has it all in hand. She just didn’t feel like answering the pesky question. The point is to piss rich people off. Leave Labour alone, they want nothing but erm oh I’m not sure.

YANBU - Phillipson clearly has no idea what the impact of VAT on Education will be. Nor does she really care as long as she’s seen to be punishing those horrible rich people. Or even better (it seems) the not really rich ones just trying to improve the education of their children as the available state schools were not suitable.

(sorry paywall but there’s not much more in the article)

PS. I’ve removed the poll tally, no one needs to see real data. Do they?

Actually views DO change over time. That's why most people start off left wing and move to centre/right as they get older. Most, not all, but it does happen. That doesn't mean they move to Reform obviously but explains why younger people are more likeky to vote Labour/Greens + older more likely to vote Tory. Again, not all but it's a general trend.

I actually think it's not healthy to stick with 1 dogmatic view all your life irrespective of anything. We are naturally curious as a species and that should lead us to seeking out other viewpoints. Just remaining doggedly with 1 ideal is not conducive to learning and developing with experience and time.

If you actually read my post I was talking about the specifics of Reform and caveated it that people can shift from the right.

Where were all the tears over the last 3 years when private schools have been upping their fee's by 20% above inflation on average.

You assertion of 20% over 3 years is incorrect and they have risen pretty much in line with many things (utility bills/train fares/price of bread). Fees pay teachers salaries+ pensions/utility bills etc. All of these things have risen so have to be paid for.
The price of EVERYTHING has increased massively. Parents budget for fee rises and build that into their affordability calculations. To then have to pay an extra 20% on top is the tipping point for many. Could you afford 20% rise on your mortgage? Most people complain about a 2% rise, not sure many could handle 20%.

Parents just sucked it up, the alternative I suppose was to admit you can’t afford it or that you’re being ripped off. Once you’re in that private bubble it’s hard to escape it.
The private school societal pressure must be huge.

Also 20% going to the school - I’m onboard with.

20% going to Labour to spaff up the wall - reconsider

Funny cos another thread is running by a poster asking why so many young people are leaving the UK to study/work abroad 😆 maybe go on that one and tell them they are wrong

Why would their reality be more valid than mine, even if it doesn't correspond with your own world view?

How do you know what my world view is outside of VAT + taxing education which I believe is ethically and morally wrong?
Or are you applying a prejudiced set of assumptions about how I may think based on this 1 topic?

From the IFS link;

private school fees are about the same in real terms in 2022–23 as they were in 2019–20. Fees dropped in real terms during the pandemic, perhaps reflecting discounts for the lack of face-to-face teaching. They have since begun to grow again and are now back to the same level as in 2019–20.

What sort of person trolls a SM page about a subject that they disagree with and then goes on another SM page to slag those people off?
You are slagging off parents who have genuine concerns about their children. Wtf has the world come to when parents attack other parents for being worried about, and taking a stand for, their own kids?! Especially on a bloody parenting site!
Your post says a lot about you as a person.

Edited

Why would young people with any gumption not want to leave? Jobs for them are going, no prospects, tax burden rising, services are rubbish, no housing. And plenty of countries where life is considerably better. Yes it's rubbish for all of us left behind but you seem to think young people aren't mobile and would be happy with life on benefits here. The next five years are not going to be Shangri-la for us all even if they are for you and if you don't yet have kids to worry about uprooting why not go for it. We shouldn't be complacent and call it "hyperbole" to say it.

Because what else are they when they do this? If they hate indy schools so much why are they hanging around SM groups set up by parents of kids at indy schools worried about the impact of VAT and then come on here to slag those people off?

Has this just happened in the last six months? Are you forgetting the Tory sh*t show? Were they leaving in their masses then? Or do you think they are all so right leaning that they just can't stand a Labour government? Also, Brexit means that even if they want to leave, it is a lot more difficult for them to do so than it would have been ten years ago.

There is a world beyond Europe? You are allowed beyond the Med you know.

The Budget has scuppered young people's work prospects unfortunately. Unemployment is rising and immigration is not slowing. So why would a young person settle for a badly paid job here or benefits when they could emigrate?

Although reciprocal youth mobility schemes with countries such as Australia, New Zealand and Canada have been updated since Brexit (2023) - extending the age limit from 30 to 35 (inclusive) and adding an extra year to the visa.

Disingenuous question.

Why have young people settled for a badly paid job here historically. Or are you oblivious to all the damage done by successive Tory governments? The difference is that it is much harder to leave now. It was easy to go to Europe, never so easy to go to US, Canada, Australia etc. Surely nobody can be so naive.
