Hi,

Has anyone else noticed a drastic difference in the cost of their food shop already this year?

Yes! Makes me angry considering the profit super markets make on food! Disgusting 😡

You must be joking. I work for a v well known supermarket and omg, every penny is watched because things are so tight, no overtime is allowed until March, we aren't replacing staff who leave as it's unaffordable, we're not allowed to order any stationery for the office, there are cuts left, right and centre. Where do you get the idea that supermarkets make big profits? 😮

Was in the papers and on the news about Tesco making billions in profits.

they make cuts to save money, hence the self checkouts before you know it we will all be replaced by this and robots etc

What’s happening then?

Did you mean 2025

The inheritance tax laws are changing for farmers, the prices will skyrocket.

GG1986 · 17/01/2025 10:42

Yes I noticed it this week when doing the online shop and also when I went in m&s to get something I buy regularly. It's shocking!

Why?

This is definitely where I am seeing the increase - most of the toothpaste options on the shelf except for the very basic Colgate / aqua fresh options all £5+ etc.

If you have a B&M/Home Bargains near you it’s worth getting that sort of thing there. I bought carpet cleaning stuff for half the price of Tesco, plus mouthwash, toothpaste, cleaning products are almost always significantly cheaper there.

Edited

I spend £1 on Sainsbury own toothpaste.

Because a small percentage of the very richest farmers will die and their estates will have to pay tax and despite being the richest farmers / estate owners in the country they are still in absolute poverty

Most of the farmers affected would probably be better called estate owners who farm/ have people farm their land

I mean it's probably raise prices or stop sending their kids to private schools or ditch the helicopter or perhaps one fewer holiday

Because it's not all farmers by any stretch but inheritance tax is weird in that people who would never get impacted get stressed out and defensive about it

This might actually help the smaller farmers - the vast majority whose estates will
Never face such taxes ; it could even the playing field for them

Those measure haven’t come into fruition yet and everybody needs a decent living wage and services so it’s something we’ll have to suck up. Nobody needs meat and expensive packaged crap every day .

I think this is part of it, we will have to adapt what we eat. Food has been relatively cheap for a long time until relatively recently - it used to be the norm for food costs to be around 30% of household income. Food prices change dramatically over time too; oysters used to be a cheap snack and now they are an expensive luxury.

When foodstuffs such as meat etc were cheap(er) it was easy to just eat that all the time, but times have changed. Maybe now we’re paying the true cost, when animal welfare is higher and farmers are being paid better. So look at what food is cheaper - even if it’s just what Aldi/Lidl have on special offer this week - and build meals around those rather than paying the higher prices for things bought previously.

As a coeliac , I mostly cook from scratch . Definitely getting more expensive . I do shop around on a DO I can't cope with online shopping . I won't compromise on tinned toms it has to be Mutti .Also eggs has to be St Ewe or Burfords So much nicer than other brands . We are lucky here ,we have Herons and Farmfoods . They sell some great often premium products at a much lower price . For example kids snacks , cheeses and store cupboard essentials . Also their frozen fish and veg are excellent quality .I also use our local asian superstore. So glad my 3 DDs have left home cost me a fortune in avocados and chicken 😆 I pop into Sainsos once a month . Also have a Tesco nearby which can be fateful . However I sometimes get lucky with reduced food . Also if I do a big cook up I often give it away to family . I am a feeder . We are getting ripped off . Wish I was self sufficient 🙂

I was wondering that

midgetastic · 17/01/2025 13:29

Food in the uk is still amongst the cheapest compared to equivalent countries

The people getting ripped off are taxpayers who end up paying UC to top up the wages of the employees

Mere1 · 17/01/2025 13:32

JingsMahBucket · 17/01/2025 02:12

Yeah, but it doesn’t taste as good as olive oil.

Extra virgin rapeseed oil does.

Meals for the week, eggs, fruit pack lunch stuff,no alcohol, the trolly wasn’t even full, aldis Jaffa cakes were 60p in 2023,they are now £1.20!

AlertCat · 17/01/2025 13:50

Butter went up by 30 p at sainsburys this week and they say they’re matching Aldi. Our food shop has gone up by at least a third in the last year, if not more, and if anything I am trying to pare back so I am confident it’s the prices and not the shopping. As the money hasn’t gone up in the same period we are feeling more and more stretched.

Mercurial123 · 17/01/2025 14:00

I doubt it's going to get any better anytime soon.

Wow that is a lot for 4 people. We are 1 adult and 2 hungry teens and I buy a couple of wines. When I spend about £100 a week I'm quite unhappy . You must be buying brand names ,expensive steaks ,salmon and stuff. That is a lot

Pumpkinpie1 · 17/01/2025 14:47

Yes it’s doubled

midgetastic · 17/01/2025 14:50

Doubled ? Surely quadrupled in a week?

LazyArsedMagician · 17/01/2025 14:55

thestudio · 16/01/2025 10:28

@LazyArsedMagician maybe you mean plain/greek yoghurt and orange juice etc, but yoghurts and drinks like squash are usually ultra-processed these days unfortunately.

I think the majority of foods that people are mentioning on this thread are processed.

I mean juices and any yoghurts. I personally do not consider those UPF.

Other things crisps, chocolate bars, biscuits - yes I consider them UPF but I also don't think I'm seeing the biggest increases.

Also forgot - agree toothpaste and shampoos etc. are massively increasing in price. I buy Head and Shoulders for my teens - a FIVER small bottle!

Mum2EmLuJa · 17/01/2025 15:07

Yes I have especially with chocolate! Every week nearly it seems to go up!

Tillycat35 · 17/01/2025 18:18

Tillycat35 · 17/01/2025 21:18

@HoraceCope No it wasn't organic that's why I was surprised.
