I certainly have noticed a difference.

No not at all, costs have stabilised over the last months or so.

The hike was in 2022/23.

Fuel has plummeted too, though is starting to creep up.. esp Diesel.

Lost589 · 15/01/2025 14:00

Yep, kids favourite cereal was up 11p last week, Waffles up around 30p too

Beyondhelp10 · 15/01/2025 14:00

Yes! It’s ridiculous. I’m trying so hard to make nutritional meals but it’s impossible for less than £100 a week.

Gardendiary · 15/01/2025 14:02

Yes definitely, Sainsbury’s own brand weetabix which was £1.37 a few weeks ago has gone up to £1.90. That’s just one example…. There’s probably loads more.

Gardendiary · 15/01/2025 14:04

I think food prices are predicted to rise by 4.2% this year.

as a fellow cook-from-scratch-er I agree with this - I think ingredients have changed less in price than convenience / ready made foods.

obviously that only works for people who have the inclination / time to cook

I think maybe this is what's going on in our house.

We get a surplus veg box delivered and we do a lot of batch cooking. It doesn't cost much apart from the olive oil. And even when we buy things like carrots and potatoes they hardly cost much at all, I haven't noticed them costing more than they used to.

What we spend a fortune on is the snacky things like, my goodness, have you seen the price of a kinder bueno now, it practically costs its weight in gold because they're mostly made of air! But no one "needs" a kinder bueno lol

MugPlate · 15/01/2025 14:08

Dairy has absolutely shot up.

Dumakey · 15/01/2025 14:11

I work in retail and my employer has increased the price on everything we sell. Expect this to happen everywhere with everything. They are trying to prepare for the NMW and NI increase. It isn't going to be pretty.

22/23 our food shop was £140 a week,2 adults 2 dc,last week it came too £234!.that’s at aldi aswell.

Aldi and Lidl are not that cheap anymore in comparison to other supermarkets, they just have a historical reputation of being so

nic1079 · 15/01/2025 14:30

I have a weekly delivery with Sainsbury's every week and I have noticed that most of the items I buy regularly have increased by 20-60p each. This is on a lot of their own make stuff as i tend to not buy much branded. Not sure if this is just Sainsbury's or across the board but it's becoming unsustainable.

Whatwaswrongwiththatusername · 15/01/2025 14:42

I haven't used online shopping for quite some time - certainly not regularly for "big" shops, but this Xmas I did my main Xmas shopping online and was absolutely stunned to realise that if I compared it to how much I spent/how much I got in comparison to last year's shop I was absolutely stunned to realise I spent way more this year, whilst still trying to rein it in and in and when it arrived it was so obvious that quantity was so much less than last year and cost maybe 1/3 more.

ParsnipPuree · 15/01/2025 14:47

Yes- just popped into Marks for a stir fry for tonight and a couple other bits £60 and that's just for tonight! Ridiculous

Giggorata · 15/01/2025 14:49

We buy mostly ingredients to cook from scratch, hopefully to offset the astronomical rise of olive oil prices, which I use copiously.
I wouldn't be able to do that pre retirement; the lack of time and energy would have kiboshed that.
We got more takeaways when we were working, too. Now, that's a rare treat, and I've noticed that prices have gone up and quality is down there.

We get a sacka spuds in the Autumn, which cost about £12. It was £8 last year. It was a rotten growing year, which also affected prices.
I'm hoping we'll see more of our home grown stuff this year, weather permitting.
My tomatoes, at least, were productive, which saved me a fortune.

RobinHeartella · 15/01/2025 14:54

I wish I could grow my own vegetables! Our tiny garden is in full shade all day/year round, and besides I have no time or skill. But my MIL just seems to click her fingers and a few months later has more vegetables than they know what to do with.

(I'm sure a lot of hard work goes into it!)

They stopped growing courgettes (my favourite veg) because "more kept appearing everyday and we didn't know what to do with them all"...! Feed them to me please MIL.

I wish I had the problem of too many courgettes! In budgens the other day I saw a SINGLE courgette, albeit a large yellow one, for £2.99. For one, single courgette!

Edit to clarify, I bought it.

ffsgloria · 15/01/2025 14:57

I popped into Tesco to get a few extra things this morning. Bagels up by 15p, rice cakes another 25p increase. Kitchen roll same. It all adds up and seems to be the only thing we spend money on at the moment. I am thinking twice about some of the things I used to add to my basket.

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 15/01/2025 14:58

Wonder what the supermarket profits look like?

DazedAndConfused321 · 15/01/2025 14:58

I've noticed prices have crept up by big leaps very quickly. Not just 5p but 30p increases. Also much less offers!

chattyness · 15/01/2025 14:58

Yes I noticed last fortnight I had 30 items less in my basket than in my Christmas shop, but the cost was almost the same, it's worrying

QuimCarrey · 15/01/2025 14:59

Not this year no. Big difference was prob 2022-3. Then it settled.

WaltzingWaters · 15/01/2025 14:59

Yeah. When I go for a little “top up” shop thinking it’ll be £20-£30, it’s usually more £60+. It’s depressing! DP and I have just been saying we’ll have to try and arrange more super budget meals.

Ilovegoldies · 15/01/2025 15:00

I went to Tesco on Sunday and I was horrified at the cost, however I did notice that their fake deals (club card price) were few and far between.

QuimCarrey · 15/01/2025 15:00

I noticed shrinkflation once prices calmed down a bit.

Due to certain issues, my youngest son eats exactly the same things every day. A couple of the items, Tesco's own brand, have gone up significantly since New Year. I can't even shop around because he won't eat anything else and there are some battles I have to concede unfortunately.

If another Covid-style lockdown is ever looming, STOCKPILE!!! Oh the troubles I experienced finding small-sized tins of Heinz Spagbol because that's all my son was eating when lockdown started (he was ten). I did manage to persuade him to eat the larger tins but still had to be that brand and item.

Fortunately he's grown out of that now and devours most things put in front of him. He still dislikes most vegetables and won't touch sweets/chocolates, but happily eats curry, chilli, roast dinners ...

10speckledfrogs · 15/01/2025 15:01

I have noticed it my normal weekly shop has risen above £80 now (2 adults and 2 kids) where before Christmas around £70 would sort us

I make my own bread and use ASDA own brand strong bread flour - that's gone up 20p per kg, the yeast also costs more

Carrots seem to have doubled in price and potatoes have also gone up. Peppers also seem to be higher priced and I can't get garlic for as little as I used to

My 18 month old has multiple allergies so he uses coconut milk for baking / cereal and so on, that's gone up 25p per litre.

We don't buy snack foods often so I can't comment too much on those but I did used to get a packet of sweets to share during Friday film night and used to buy them for £1, barely ever big sharing bags on offer for £1 now.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 15/01/2025 15:02

I've noticed that my weekly main shop has increased; I put it down to all of the pre-Christmas offers having ended and virtually nothing being on offer at the moment.
