Hi,

Has anyone else noticed a drastic difference in the cost of their food shop already this year?

I certainly have noticed a difference.

But supermarkets will just pick the farmers with the best price. Most aren’t going to be impacted by inheritance laws, those that will will be spread out and need to compete with other farmers.

Supermarkets don't look for farmers with the best price, supermarkets dictate the price along with the size and quantity

Which is why there is so much food waste - before it even leaves the farms

Tesco and co say this is what we need, this is the price point - can you deliver? Then the crop isn't as good as Tesco wants - carrots are too wee or too big - they are plowed back into the ground

At the moment farmers are getting £6 a kilo for beef - that's live on the hoof price. Then ad the production costs of putting that beef into a shop, you know why prices are hight

Betchyaby · 18/01/2025 09:32

Farmers are very united on this issue, I think we will find they won't so easily sell out. Even the 'best price' will be more than they are now. Many are going to be impacted.

Hmmm no many are not. They don’t seem to have been united over anything thus far.

midgetastic · 18/01/2025 11:48

If farmers were United they would be in a better position to fight the pressure from the big supermarkets , which could improve their profitability and long term stability

At the moment they are effectively fighting each other to get the contracts - a race to the bottom

Being United against as tax that won't actually affect the vast majority seems weird

When you count every penny, believe me you check the price of everything

Im glad you aren't at that stage

no but what i am saying is we pay attention to the price once it is weighed, so per head, rather than per kilo

My cat's food - Felix pouches have suddenly reduced from 100gm to 85, which I was shocked about. The cats have been having them for over 10 years! I ordered 2 boxes yesterday x 100gms and saw it had been 'substituted' overnight for exact same product but now 85 gms. Yes everything is suddenly so expensive.

Bad enough when it's an 'ongoing use' product like a tub of butter or bottle of ketchup; but when it's something that is clearly designed to be a 'serves one' portion, that doesn't easily stay fresh for long when opened, what a faff.

Also, your DCat will assume that you're trying to starve them by stealth and will hate you Grin

Butter went up by 30 p at sainsburys this week and they say they’re matching Aldi. Our food shop has gone up by at least a third in the last year, if not more, and if anything I am trying to pare back so I am confident it’s the prices and not the shopping. As the money hasn’t gone up in the same period we are feeling more and more stretched.

I didn't realise that the 'we match Aldi prices' promise meant that they would increase theirs whenever Aldi do!!

Glad to say Im just back from Tesco - 95p per head - £2.19 a kg

I always check price per kilo because so often "special offers" are anything but, and supermarkets muddy the waters even further by showing price per kilo for some items, price per 100 gr for others . Im often stood in an aisle with the calculator out

Yes Im that sad git who buys loo roll and tissue depending on cost per sheet

AlertCat · 18/01/2025 17:08

My Tesco recently started charging onions at 21p each instead of by weight. It added about 30% to the price (3 onions of similar size at Sainsbury’s were 41p).

noctilucentcloud · 18/01/2025 17:24

Overthebow · 17/01/2025 21:26

Yes I agree it sounds very expensive. I don’t really understand how people are spending so much unless they’re buying all luxury or pre-prepared food. We are a family of 4 (2 DCs) and I’ve just placed our weekly food delivery order and it’s come to £120 for everything. We don’t budget as don't really need to and I think we eat well. We may do one too up shop for bread, milk and fruit which comes to around £10 if we do it.

Some is where you live / if you have access to a car - lack of choice of supermarkets and smaller supermarkets tend to be more expensive. Food intolerances limit choice of whichever fruit and veg is in season and cheap, or necessitate gluten free, dairy free etc which are ridiculously expensive.

bungobungobungo · 18/01/2025 20:27

@DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe Yes that's what rankles. Dcat has 4 pouches a day, a box lasts 3 days, and now my life and cat's have been thrown into confusion. She's thin enough and can't afford to be even thinner!

BrightYellowDaffodil · 18/01/2025 22:11

RandomButtons · 17/01/2025 22:19

I don’t pay it - I shop around, but presumably some people must pay that.

If no one paid it, the companies would have to drop their prices! All the time someone buys it, they’ll keep their prices up.

Something like broccoli is a bit odd to mentally rationalise by the kilo, as most of the heavy bit is what you throw away.

I did once see an abbreviated shelf label in Tesco, under the toilet rolls, giving the price 'per 100 shts' - and I must admit I had to give it a shocked second look to make sure I hadn't drastically misunderstood their unit comparator Grin

Postmanplod · 18/01/2025 23:08

Yep. Packet of basic ham gone from £1 a couple of years ago to £1.45. That’s some inflation.

The biggest pisstake is a Baxter’s Chicken Broth Soup. Now £2.10 when I was paying about a quid for that. I just don’t buy it anymore.

I’ve cut out what I perceive to be non essentials that I used to buy.

Kitchen Roll and Flavoured Water alone save around £250 a year.

wine is my next challenge as that is getting ridiculous too!

Clutterbugsmum · 19/01/2025 10:06

Vegetables are always more expensive this time of year because they are out of season.

But also farmers have had very difficult growing conditions over the last few years, so their costs have risen so they have to pass them on.

Cut the woody bit off the bottom of the stalk, slice the rest and cook, for vitamins, anticarcinogenic compounds, and antioxidants.

Don’t waste edible food, look on the web for recipes.

I put mine to use in soup and stir fry's , stilton and broccoli soup is the dogs dangly bits , and I will use the rind of the stilton in it to save waste

Also I save parmesan rinds, just chuck them in the freezer, and pop those in soup to give great flavour

Aldi and Lidl are not that cheap anymore in comparison to other supermarkets, they just have a historical reputation of being so

Lidl is still cheaper for us, especially if we use the app/vouchers, but nowhere could be described as cheap nowadays.

Yeah, I know it's edible, and many people seem to find it delicious - but (in my opinion, and I'm guessing I'm not alone in that - although the rest of MN may well disagree), the stalk isn't actually very pleasant to eat.

The same with bacon rind and chicken skin - I know lots of people like them, but not for me, thanks.

It depends on what you buy, I suppose. I find a lot of their stuff competitively priced, even if not dirt cheap - although I find some of their lines are very good value indeed.

The stuff in their Aisles of Wonder is usually very good value, but that does rather depend on you needing the random items and not buying just because they're a bargain!

To be honest, I love a cheap price as much as anybody, but I'd rather them maintain quality and keep a reasonable price, rather than do a Poundland (as it was previously) and massively cut corners purely to drive the headline price artificially and unsustainably low.

Yes, as I said, I do find them cheaper.
I mostly buy ingredients but some ready prepared snacks, bars, biccies etc. I love when they have different ranges in but tend to check leaflets beforehand.

Sorry, I quoted you but then kind of leapfrogged and commented on PP's points that you'd already differed in opinion on (same as me)!

I certainly have noticed a difference.

Brace yourself for more increases when the effects of the employer NI changes take effect. I work in food procurement and we are anticipating an avalanche of increases when this happens and the full extent of the cost pressures on suppliers is felt.

GloriousBlue · 19/01/2025 12:05

OMG I couldn't get over the price of biscuits in a big Tesco yesterday
I just fancied something cheap/own brand, but literally couldn't find anything

Their choc digestives have gone from 60p to 90p
No cheap shortbread, just some for £2.50
Hardly anything on offer

The average pack of biscuits was over £2

Wtf

midgetastic · 19/01/2025 12:43

tractor protests , what tractor protests ?

You mean sone of the poor farmers are supporting the rich ones?

Bet that's not a two way street
