Hi,

Has anyone else noticed a drastic difference in the cost of their food shop already this year?

I certainly have noticed a difference.

Just you wait until April 2026...

HolidayAtNight · 15/01/2025 15:16

I couldn't believe how little £30 got me in Asda the other day, and it was mostly ingredients.

OldieButBaddie · 15/01/2025 15:19

No, not this year. Very much so in previous years.

Yes- just popped into Marks for a stir fry for tonight and a couple other bits £60 and that's just for tonight! Ridiculous

OMG!

I'm curious, what exactly did you buy @ParsnipPuree

UpTheLoobyLooTree · 15/01/2025 15:21

Yes, just since Christmas. I've done several 'normal' shops, with no Christmas food or treats for the holidays but it's just not going back down to a 'normal' price. I cook from scratch too, so it's not just convenience food, but I suspect non-food items in the supermarket shop e.g. toiletries, paper goods etc, may be at least part of the problem. Haven't had time to sit down and analyse my receipts yet, but I'm going to have to if this carries on. I suspect the bigger shops most people do over Christmas have been used as a smoke screen for nudging prices up tbh.

PlopSofa · 15/01/2025 15:24

Inflation finally back down to 2.5% yesterday though for how long who knows…

but hopefully things will stabilise for a while. It would be nice.

theres a really nice salmon at m£s that was £7 it’s now £8.95 just for 2 fillets.

if I bought 4 fillets that’s nearly £20 just for the protein part for 4 people. So very expensive to eat well these days.

I'm noticing the cheaper choices disappearing from the shelves, so I think that's why personally.

Me too. Can’t find Tesco tomato puree for love nor money. Was 49p a tube. The next one is £1.40.

Really not much!! Bits for chicken stir fry/sauce, some fruit and a two little salads for dd to take to work for lunch. That's it.

Pancakeflipper · 15/01/2025 15:28

Yes.

I can't get it under £100 a week at the supermaket and I get my veg/fruit at my grocers....
I don't buy ready meals (well there's always a pizza and fish fingers and oven chips in my freezer).

I think it's the non-food stuff like deo/toothpaste/loo roll... must pay more attention to those items. Might have to alter brands.

spectacled · 15/01/2025 15:28

Yes absolutely.

Toolardy · 15/01/2025 15:31

It’s depressing. I find I do my Tesco order then go through it and take out everything I can do without to get it to a reasonable cost.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 15/01/2025 15:31

No, and we won’t have because there hasn’t been one - inflation is decreasing and although that means prices are still going up, they’re not going up dramatically.

However it’s odd this thread has appeared on the day it’s been announced that inflation is decreasing- almost as though we can’t have people thinking the govt is doing an Ok job!

Devilsmommy · 15/01/2025 15:32

Same here. My toddlers soya milk which is usually £2 has all of a sudden jumped to £2.50 and Ritz crackers from £1 to £1.25. doesn't sound like a massive amount but when every item has too a price rise it seriously adds up😡

caringcarer · 15/01/2025 15:35

I think towards the end of December quite a few supermarkets had good Xmas offers on. Now they've gone so people are noticing the prices are higher again. I bought swede, carrots, shallots, potatoes, Brussel sprouts all for 8p per pack but I've used them all now so had to pay full price for a swede a few days ago.

LaFidola · 15/01/2025 15:36

I actually thought things had levelled out a bit. Shows what I know!

Batiste dry shampoo is so expensive now though. I remember when it was £1.99 and I thought that was a lot! Can't remember what it is now but a lot more than that. Oh and tights! I haven't bought any since 2019 so was a shock recently and it was only in Tesco.

But generally, no, not recently.

QuimCarrey · 15/01/2025 15:38

I wonder if it's maybe the branded stuff that's gone up.

StarCourt · 15/01/2025 15:39

yes defo there's only me and DD, 2 years ago a weeks shopping with top ups of fruit and milk was about £60 per week. Now a weeks shopping is about £75 plus top ups in the week of about £25

What’s happening then?

Did you mean 2025

Wexone · 15/01/2025 15:41

regarding price of olive oil the past year or 2 have been very bad harvest due to bad weather etc. we will have to get used to these things affecting pricing
to me it's the price of dog food and cat food it's gone up something shocking
though I still wouldn't be without them

Hi,

Has anyone else noticed a drastic difference in the cost of their food shop already this year?

I certainly have noticed a difference.

My daughter actually rang me today to say they wanted £8 for a chicken in a bag. She likes it as she's a vegetarian and her family enjoy chicken so she hasn't got to handle it.
She refused to pay it

Yes! The cheap passata has vanished too.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 15/01/2025 15:51

Meadowfinch · 15/01/2025 13:46

Not generally more expensive but I cook from scratch.

Some salad stuffs are higher but it's winter. Some grocery items (cannellini beans, cooking oil, some biscuits & coffee) are down.

Some things are harder to find though, tomato paste - due to the chinese import issue, and wholemeal fresh baked bread is so hard to find, I've taken to making my own.

I agree. The stuff I see that has rocketed in price over recent years is branded/ultra processed stuff. It’s not what I buy so I haven’t seen a huge change in what I spend on average. As you say, some things have started reducing in price.

Meadowfinch · 15/01/2025 15:57

Needmilkandbread · 15/01/2025 15:25

I think the manufacturer had been claiming it was made with Italian tomatoes but was caught importing & using Chinese tomatoes, which is why Tesco have cleared the shelves of it.

I'd rather pay the extra a couple of times a year if it means I'm not eating food picked with slave labour. 🙁

Wonder what the supermarket profits look like?

Struggling.... they are doing all they can to help the poor consumer....

£2.29bn

Tesco delivered a rebound in profitability for the year to 24 February 2024 (FY2023) with operating profits surging 100.1% to £2.82bn while pre-tax profits climbed from £0.88bn to £2.29bn
The group saw statutory revenues climb 4.4% to £68.19bn while its more widely reported group sales climbed 7.4% to £61.48bn

Windfall tax?

Herbal teas - I drink A LOT! used to be £2 - £3 for a nice box. Now never under £4.
