To really hate phone calls

I find phone calls really intrusive. I always forget what i want i want to say when i am talking on the phone even if i write down what i want to say first. When i talk to people face to face i have no trouble talking. I prefer texting to phone calls. I can reply later if i am busy.

I am guessing you're young (like under 40?)
I am well over 40 and feel exactly the same way as the op.

I prefer phone calls but I guess I better get used to whatsapping more or text. I get the thing of a time not being convenient but don’t understand why you either don’t answer of say can you call at x or I’ll call you at x time.

Hearing a voice feels more personal more like human contact then Whatspp or email. Agree other methods are good for paper trail.

I guess it’s just technology changing.

I think we've reverted. My (born mid 1890s) grandmother was not a creature of the phone and would SHOUT "can you hear me" at various points during a call.

I was born early 1960s and the phone is still the most normal way for me to communicate, although I'm well able to use other means. I think people should try to remember that there are still older people for whom this is the default, though and one day the preferred means of those younger will be sneered at.

How is it false?!

Read what I said- it SEEMS false. This means it SEEMS false to me. It doesn't mean it is.

Someone telling you your roof is on fire/someone is breaking into your car?

I don't have a car.

Not everyone listens. If i don't answer when i am busy they will just keep phoning back. Therefore i have to turn my phone off when i am busy.

I really hate them generally speaking but I will use them when they’re the most sensible way of making an arrangement or something like negotiating a price.

I am 70 and feel the same as the OP. I don't have a phobia and it doesn't affect my life it's just a preference.

I find it a lot easier to comfort someone who is upset when i talk to them face to face. It is a lot easier to read social qeues when talking face to face. I have a few relatives who always sound fine on the phone. Yet there are are times that we have met up. I have been able to tell that something is wrong when i have seen their face

Obviously face to face is best. But phone is at least better than text for gaging emotions. That was what I was getting at with my post.

It is the expectation that i am instantly available to talk that bothers me. I have certain relatives who cannot take the hint that i am not able to talk to them. I am not a fan of making calls either. My relatives would expect me to talk for ages.

It sounds like this topic is not actually about phone anxiety or is even phone specific for you. It’s more about being annoyed by your relatives and not having well functioning boundaries with them.

TwinklyFawn · 14/01/2025 10:43

I do have boundaries. I have certain relatives who do not respect my boundaries.

Well my mum is always really formal on the phone.

This must be problematic when most people feel the opposite? If you need to communicate with 'me' you will text or leave a msg (but maybe you will check them?)
