Just wondering if anyone lets their children have a TV in their room, and if so what age?

@PlayedOurFavouriteSong , DC2 watches films. I know they don't watch TV much because their door is always open unless they've got the TV on (like tonight).

They have literally been revising all day and have just gone up to watch a film. Maybe I should suggest that they go to the pub and get trashed instead of choosing to watch a film in bed. 😶

Such a judgy lot!

😂 at the pub comment!

at 15 I was not watching inappropriate things on a tv in my room. I was drinking at the pub and doing inappropriate things I shouldn’t have been doing at 15. TV watching a Netflix series or Disney plus at the age of 15 is not an issue.

and I’d have known if they were watching it late. Very small house and thin walls!

Mrsgreen100 · 11/01/2025 21:23

No way no tv in bedrooms
no phones etc even laptops
17 plus
we wonder why all teens are stuffering with anxiety and a raft of other problems
constant bombarding of of media is not ok
for young minds

Haaaaappyyynewyear · 11/01/2025 21:25

I was 18 when I got a big box TV in my room at my parents.😆🙌🏻

ShatnersWoodwind · 11/01/2025 21:26

TVs in bedrooms are a bit 1990s arn't they?
No kid really watches stuff on 'TV' these days do they?
It's tablets and phones in the bedroom which are the modern equivalent, and that's what you need to keep on top of!
If your kid has a tablet, then guess what - they have a "TV in their bedroom"!

I know. We have not had any issues with our kids having TVs in their rooms, if we had, I’d have removed them. I’m sure it wouldn’t work for some children but it’s been fine in our family.

PromiseNotToCall · 11/01/2025 21:28

Nope. I don't think it's necessary. Kids can watch TV in the living/family room.

RachelCarew · 11/01/2025 21:29

@ChocolateTea 😂, now 18 year, serious A level revision AAA predicted but it's been in there since GCSE year. Clearly addicted to the TV. I had an email earlier - it has cost me £3.49 for the film they've chosen tonight.

I think I was doing worse at 18 too!

Am805463 · 11/01/2025 21:31

Yes, age 10, 13, 17, 20. They use them mainly for their consoles, only occasionally for Netflix/Disney+.

Only if you allow them in their bedroom. Its still optional not to allow them

I think that's part of the problem with this judgy lot.

We hear so much about social media and it getting into the heads of our young people. Online bullying, mean friendship groups, no escape.

You can't do that on a bedroom TV, essentially it is a much safer device than a tablet or phone for a young person.

Nobody has a TV in their room. Feels like the road to hell to me.

Road to hell 😂

Don't be such a drama queen. I had a telly in my room as a child and I'm a perfectly functioning human being.

oobedobe · 11/01/2025 21:35

No, the 16 yo mainly watches on her laptop in her room
the 12 yo doesn't really watch any tv, prefers to play switch or watch youtube on her laptop (not in her room)
we have a tv in the living room (main floor) and recently got a tv for the basement family room (so we all have another space we can watch in or the teens can use with friends etc).
We have our old tv in our room and actually never watch it.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 11/01/2025 21:36

We ended up with two TVs, because I used to use one as a monitor for work (lg hybrid thing) , that one then ended up in our bedroom e when I changed jobs. I went to turn it on recently and it doesn't work, when we were trying to track back to last time it had worked it was almost a year prior when I'd had surgery and was pretty bed bound for a couple of days. So we won't be replacing it, and ds is 6 and I see no reason for him to have any screens of his own.

Rumors1 · 11/01/2025 21:42

Mine are 13, 15 and 17 and no screens at all in bedroom including phones.
We have one tv in the living room and have to agree on what to watch.

ErinAoife · 11/01/2025 21:50

Don't have TV in my children room at all.

Righto. Didn't occur to you I might not be entirely serious?

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/01/2025 21:54

Those who all say it’s bad for sleep

dont you /they watch tv Downstairs before going to bed?

so what’s the difference

dd doesn’t usually watch hers before her bedtime but odd time she does and goes to sleep /turns it’s off when I tell her

and goes to sleep

she would never turn it on if I said no /turn it off

as with anything it’s boundaries

malmi · 11/01/2025 21:54

Hmm, there's one in our 2yo's room but it was already in there. He can't work it yet. It sometimes goes on for nappy changes. We are relaxed about TV time, although no tablets or phones. But I guess I win the award for youngest bedroom-TV-haver?

EnglishGirlApproximately · 11/01/2025 22:02

DS has just got one in his room to use as a monitor for the X box he had for Christmas. It isn't linked to sky and Internet can only be accessed through the X box which has tight parental controls on it. I'm conscious that at his age he wants to have some privacy and a place to hang out with friends, and as I control it I'm fine with it. Phones not allowed upstairs at night, and I don't think he's even been on the iPad in years.
I don't have a TV in my bedroom but am coming round to the idea, especially on cold nights!

Endofyear · 11/01/2025 22:08

Yes they did as teens, mostly for Xbox but could watch netflix/now tv on them as well.

thomasinacat · 11/01/2025 22:17

Nope, no TV, phones or computers in bedrooms. Kids need a break from all the tech, and it's not good wind down just before sleep.

I had a TV in my room as a tween & teen and like PPs, yes watched unsuitable stuff, and there's much more unsuitable stuff now on terrestrial TV.

TerrysNeapolitan · 11/01/2025 22:37

This has been interesting reading. I was born in 1972 (Now 52) and I had a B&W tv in bedroom at a very young again remember watching Tenko and Bridge on the River Kwai on it. We only had 3 channels and I remember Channel 4 launching. Had a colour TV later and was addicted to brookside. Now I never watch TV at all. Just radio and YT. Has TV gone out of fashion? I have never watched for years now, it has been an interesting read....

LondonLawyer · 11/01/2025 22:41

Never, here. No TVs in bedrooms (including ours) and no unsupervised internet access for children, it's living room only. No phones or unsupervised computer/tablet access for 10 yr old.

EconomyClassRockstar · 11/01/2025 22:42

I think it depends on how much space you have. We had one in our eldest son's bedroom when he was about 10 so he could watch something other than CBeebies which was on on the main tv. As our kids got older, we had a bigger house and then didn't need tvs in their rooms. Although, DH and I still have one today. DH likes watching the news while he gets ready for work.

But ultimately, it doesn't make you a better parent whatever way you go. It's just a bloody tv!

Mumof1andacat · 11/01/2025 22:44

From 10 yrs old when we decorated his room. I had 1 in my bedroom from about 6, and I'm 40. I have turned out a normal person with a job, qualifications, and interests.
