Just wondering if anyone lets their children have a TV in their room, and if so what age?

Bedrooms are for READING! And sleeping.

In your house.

In my house you can do what you like within reason.

BeMellowOchreZebra · 11/01/2025 21:01

Absolutely not. Ever.

mulledwineandcheese · 11/01/2025 21:02

DS does. He's 5. It's also his playroom, not just his bedroom and we've never limited screen time. He does tend to watch TV in the living room with us though, but prefers watching his own at weekends when for example DH and I are getting ready in the morning and we are all upstairs.

Hufflemuff · 11/01/2025 19:25

Those who are against it.... why???

Because it's really, really bad for your sleep quality. Bad sleep leads to all sorts of issues.

Also, as PPs have pointed out, you can't supervise a TV in a kid's room.

All the people with teens that don’t have TV’s, do they not chill in their rooms? If so, what do they do in there? Can’t imagine an older child not having one tbh. Mines had one since 10/11 but only used it for gaming anyway.

Also, what if they want to watch something in the evening? Surely not on the family tv?

Read books mostly. Maybe craft or drawing. If they want to watch something they use the family TV.

freezingmytoesoff · 11/01/2025 21:04

Honestly I wouldn't, I always had one from 6ish onwards and now I can't sleep without the tv on if I'm alone, the dark and quiet scares me without it. I'm 31. 🤦🏻‍♀️

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 11/01/2025 21:05

No tv's in any bedrooms. Mine included.

Lwrenn · 11/01/2025 21:05

Mine do, tvs and game consoles etc, just have a rule an hour before bedtime no tv or screens. My dc either read or just chill with their sensory lights. Never caused any problems or antisocial behaviours. I have 2 downstairs living spaces but they’re quite noisy so my dc like some quiet time alone

Comedycook · 11/01/2025 21:05

Ds got one as a 15th birthday present

RachelCarew · 11/01/2025 21:05

I actually encouraged my youngest to have a TV when we redecorated their room.

A TV, e-reader or book allows them to watch or read whatever they want to without the distraction of doing it on a phone/tablet where people can msg/contact/get to them. They needed a break from a toxic friendship group at the time.

Really studious kid, the TV gets watched at the weekends, like tonight when they're watching something on Netflix that me and DC1 are not interested in.

We also have two receptions with TVs.

ETA I added a TV to my own bedroom at 50 when I had cancer/was going through chemo. Rarely use it, but if I am unwell I might watch something.

DinosaurMunch · 11/01/2025 21:08

It's very noticeable on this thread how all the people whose kids have TV is their bedroom never watch it but all the people who had TV in their own room when they were a child spent hours watching unsuitable things late at night!

Something funny?

That two wee kids have got 65" TVs in their bedrooms... Seems utterly bizarre and unnecessary.

Our main TV isn't 65"...

ChocolateTea · 11/01/2025 21:09

mine had a TV in their room (and console) from age of 12. We have a very small 2 up 2 down and each need our own space. I have a tv in my room too, sometimes DH and I don’t want to watch the same things.

DS18 doesn’t have one now, but he has a PC with two monitors and is a uni student so lives his own life tbh

if we had a second lounge, or a den, or kids room, maybe they wouldn’t have had one in their room, but tbh it suited our family and hasn’t affected either of them adversely, at 16 and 18 they’ve passed exams well, have good social lives, sleep well, and have other hobbies.

stargirl1701 · 11/01/2025 21:11

Nope. One TV in the house.

QueSyrahSyrah · 11/01/2025 21:12

No TV in any bedroom here. May change the rules when DS reaches late teens.

All the people saying 'They only watch it at X time', that's what my Mum would likely have said in 1994 when I was watching Eurotrash with the subtitles on at 11 years old.

DinosaurMunch · 11/01/2025 21:12

Having a TV in a young child's room seems a bit sad to me, like you are trying to get them out of the way. Surely you don't want a 5 year old watching TV alone. Does that child not want to be with the family? Bit different for teenagers.

Kids just don’t seem to watch as much tv now, they tend to watch YouTube and game instead. My kids watch certain films and series on Netflix, not many though and they never watch anything on live tv. Things have changed since I was their age.

Yes, quite!

We had TV in our room and watched all sorts of inappropriate stuff... Watched EuroTrash at 11 years old.

Just kept it in low and turned off when mum came upstairs.

What makes you think kids aren't watching iPlayer, prime video, Netflix, YouTube etc on these TVs?

K0OLA1D · 11/01/2025 21:16

None of the tvs in our house can work without Internet connection as we have no aerials. Dp turns the Internet connection off to all the kids devices, including tvs at 9.30.

So that's how I know they're not watching eurotrash

RachelCarew · 11/01/2025 21:19

@PlayedOurFavouriteSong , DC2 watches films. I know they don't watch TV much because their door is always open unless they've got the TV on (like tonight).

They have literally been revising all day and have just gone up to watch a film. Maybe I should suggest that they go to the pub and get trashed instead of choosing to watch a film in bed. 😶

Such a judgy lot!

Monkeybutt1 · 11/01/2025 21:19

Nope we have 2 family rooms downstairs with TVs so DS can watch what he wants on of them and her has a gaming one in the spare room but no TVs in anyone's bedroom. My cousin has one and used to stay up watching inappropriate programmes on hers late at night, she ended up terrifying herself with some horror film so much she had nightmares for weeks and had to tell her parents she'd been watching it. We don't have a TV in our bedroom either

Criteria16 · 11/01/2025 21:21

No TV in any of the bedrooms. I genuinely don't see the need for it.

My kids and their friends use TVs for Netflix, prime etc but even then, they don’t watch many series and they don’t watch live tv. They use iPads or PCs for youtube, that just seems to be what they do. I can’t think of anything my teens have watched on iPlayer, they don’t watch bbc, itv etc, it’s all Netflix, prime, YouTube and then gaming.
