TV in child’s bedroom???

Just wondering if anyone lets their children have a TV in their room, and if so what age?

OP posts:

My 10 year old got one a few months ago. He occasionally watches it on a Saturday afternoon if the weathers bad but that’s it, otherwise we all prefer to be together downstairs. It’s not a terrible thing for all kids, it depends on the individuals and already established family habits.

Snorlaxo · 11/01/2025 19:30

After GCSEs here. They had devices that they could watch stuff like Netflix from secondary school but the tv is for gaming.

UmopapIsdn · 11/01/2025 19:31

They were 16 and 19. It’s used for gaming rather than tv.

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 11/01/2025 19:33

Yes. DS 13.

Blarn · 11/01/2025 19:35

10 and 7 and no tv. I had one when I was 11 and like a PP, put it on the lowest volume and watched all kinds of unsuitable things on C4 late at night. Dds have kindle tablets anyway, so if they do want to sit in their rooms in the day and watch something they can on these. We don't have a TV in our room either so I dot think they feel left out.

I was absolutely anti-tv in my child’s bedroom. I was anti screen time in general.

then she had a mental breakdown at 9yo and got an ASD diagnosis. I had to change many of my rules. Screen time became a tool for managing anxiety.

To begin with, we put the tv on a sleep timer and we had control of the content.

Notdoingthatno · 11/01/2025 19:44

Absolutely not.

EverythingElseIsTaken · 11/01/2025 19:46

No TVs in any bedroom in this house. I honestly can’t see any need.

HPandthelastwish · 11/01/2025 19:49

I got one at 13.

DD is 15 and doesn't have one and isnt interested in one she rarely watches TV and has an iPad if she wants to watch it in her room rather than the living room

whippyskippy · 11/01/2025 19:50

No way. Screens do not belong in sleeping spaces, especially not televisions.

BelleSauvage9 · 11/01/2025 19:50

Dd got one when they turned 12 because they bought a PlayStation 5 and we didn't want them playing in the living room all the time

😂

Something funny?

Sometimeswinning · 11/01/2025 20:01

All 3 of mine do. Since the age of about 8. It’s their space. Especially now they are teens. One likes his ps time with his mates online. Dd15 likes to binge watch. Dd9 has it on when her friends are round. Therefore I have my living room space! Win win!

Those who are against it.... why???

Well, someone mentioned a child as young as 6 having one. There are programmes even on the 5 terrestrial channels of an evening that are not suitable for children.

icebearforpresident · 11/01/2025 20:02

Both kids, age 9 & 11 have had one for a couple of years. They only have it on for a few hours over the weekends, Friday and Saturday nights and maybe during the day if there’s something in particular they want to watch.

DH and I don’t have one and don’t really want one.

SandandSky · 11/01/2025 20:05

BIossomtoes · 11/01/2025 19:18

Never. Bedrooms are for sleeping.

This.

We don’t have one in our bedroom and the kids don’t either. I am pretty chilled about a lot of things but screens/tvs in bedrooms is a hard no.

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/01/2025 20:05

Dd7 does. She had from 4 I think

But linked to a firestick so can only watch prime /ceebeebies and iPlayer /kids stuff which are only set for kids log in for her age

not linked to internet

not allowed to watch am before school but can when wakes after 7am at weekends

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 11/01/2025 20:06

Mine does and has done since she was about 8

Nursingadvice · 11/01/2025 20:06

All the people with teens that don’t have TV’s, do they not chill in their rooms? If so, what do they do in there? Can’t imagine an older child not having one tbh. Mines had one since 10/11 but only used it for gaming anyway.

Also, what if they want to watch something in the evening? Surely not on the family tv?

macap · 11/01/2025 20:08

Yes, 10 & 11. Doesn't stop them from sleeping.

Unrelated38 · 11/01/2025 20:10

DS is 3 with a TV in his room. It only plays dvds and we only watch together for movie nights. We don't have a TV in our living room

Relaxaholic · 11/01/2025 20:13

No tvs in any bedroom in the house, and there never will be. My kids are 8 and 10

Itsjustnotthevibe · 11/01/2025 20:15

Yes at secondary school age but they use fire sticks or have a smart TV that we can control so they can't sneakily watch anything when they are supposed to be sleeping (like I used to) and we can control what apps they have access to.

Sprogonthetyne · 11/01/2025 20:17

Hufflemuff · 11/01/2025 19:25

Those who are against it.... why???

Because I had one in my room as a child and watched all sorts of crap at ridiculous times of the night. Turned in on as soon as my mum went downstairs, watched for a few hours then turned it off quickly and pretended to be asleep when I heard her on her own way to bed (around 11.30). I often turned it back on once the coast was clear, and could be up to 1/2 in the morning before passing out with ot still on.

I was primary school aged, constantly knackered and exposed to themes way above my age. I don't want that for my own DC.
