Just wondering if anyone lets their children have a TV in their room, and if so what age?

We don't own any TVs, and small devices like phones and tablets (which have Disney+ and netflix) must stay downstairs even though I have pins and passwords to restrict as best i can.
2 kids primary age.
I try to encourage them to be downstairs with me rather than shut away in their rooms with a screen filling their time.
From 15ish Id prob relax a bit if they wanted one and happy to save for it.

No TVs ever in bedrooms. My DC are now in their early 20s. We all watch/ed TV together and take turns on suggestions. When friends came round as children and teens, they in general didn’t watch TV. They might watch a DVD.

DeathMetalMum · 11/01/2025 20:26

We have tvs in the bedroom here. Dd's were 8&10ish they share. We only have one tv downstairs. Means dc can watch different things if need be. It goes on for them to play xbox once or twice a week after school and before dinner, and then often on a Friday night where they like to watch a few episodes of a series before bed, they are 11&13 now. Dp and I will spend some time together if he isn't in work, eat a meal, watch a film or play a game.

They don't put it on any other night of the week, or without asking. They read every evening. Causes no problems here.

Sherrystrull · 11/01/2025 20:26

Yes. Used for gaming at aged 12. All dc watch iPads for some downtime, sometimes in bed. They go off at a reasonable time. Not a problem in our house. Kids have lots of interests and activity.

Mespher · 11/01/2025 20:30

Don't they use them mainly for gaming, DS didn't really watch TV on his.

Whateveryouwant1 · 11/01/2025 20:31

No tvs in bedrooms here. Same for adults, teens or pre teen. Never has been. One tv in the sitting room that's it.

Juliagreeneyes · 11/01/2025 20:33

No TVs in bedrooms - I don’t have one in mine and wouldn’t want one. It’s really bad for sleep. Tv is more a family watching activity anyway.

Also it’s not like when we were young and it was always on because there were a lot of entertaining family programmes: it’s pretty crap these days and mostly uninteresting to kids! It’s the internet functions they’d be using late at night (hard to get a Tv these days that isn’t a smart Tv. And I want my kid watching YouTube late at night even less than I want her watching channel 4….)

YourWildAmberSloth · 11/01/2025 20:34

Yes, aged 12. Mainly because he used it for gaming - before that he would play on the tv in the living room, and I would decamp to the kitchen or my bedroom.

NoNoNona · 11/01/2025 20:34

No and why anyway?
Bedrooms should be electronic-device free and for sleeping/relaxing/reading or possibly even listening to music only.

Pineapplewaves · 11/01/2025 20:34

SlipperyLizard · 11/01/2025 19:16

I wouldn’t, because my sister & I had a tv in our room in the 80s and we would wait until my mum went downstairs then turn it on at lowest volume and watch whatever was playing.

My DDs have tablets & phones they can watch stuff on, but parental controls means they can’t do it when they’re meant to be asleep!

Same with me and my DSIS, we had a radio as well and liked to secretly listen to the late night "problem call in" on a Sunday night where people used to phone in with relationship and sex problems!

No TV in any bedrooms in our house but you can access most things on a pc now anyway so they aren't really needed anymore.

Mixologism · 11/01/2025 20:35

They haven't yet at 16 &18, but we have a second TV elsewhere in the house instead and phones, Switch etc.

We just had one TV until they were about 10 and then we got a second one downstairs. If we hadn't had the space for that I'm sure my answer would be different - though I would have probably started by putting a second TV in our room rather than the kids' rooms.

RunVelma · 11/01/2025 20:36

We never allowed TVs in bedrooms when we lived in a large house with 2 sitting rooms and all bedrooms upstairs.

Our circumstances have changed, so we now live in a much smaller house. We put TVs in the kids’ rooms and it’s not made much difference. They rarely watch them and prefer to squeeze into our tiny living room and argue over what to watch!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 11/01/2025 20:40

Nope- I got a tv at 14 in my room, spent way too much time watching tv late into the night. Big brother had just come out!

PokerFriedDips · 11/01/2025 20:42

Would never have a tv in any bedroom. DH and I too abide by the same because there's no age at which it's sensible to have a tv in a bedroom. We're an adhd family and keeping bedrooms a low-stimulation environment is vital.

FusionChefGeoff · 11/01/2025 20:47

Nope

No screens in bedrooms for as long as possible. Ideally I want to create a home where bedrooms are for sleeping and all work / socialising / leisure is in family or communal areas.

DS12 and DD10 and it's working well so far but aware they will want to spend less time with us so may start allowing screens for homework upstairs soon.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 11/01/2025 20:47

Those with teens who don’t allow TVs in the bedroom, do you also ban phones? As mentioned I allow tv as DC isn’t really interested anyway, but phone is a definite no

nmechg · 11/01/2025 19:21

No tvs in bedroom's in our house

Same. We have one TV in the whole house and it is in the living room

movingtoreading · 11/01/2025 20:52

Tvs do not belong in tbd bedroom

PlayedOurFavouriteSong · 11/01/2025 20:56

My kids had them in their bedrooms from when they were about 5. They didn’t watch them much but were nice to have for a film every now and then. They’re teens and older now and we’ve never had any issues with them having TVs in their room, as well as consoles and a PC, they still spend lots of time with us, do other activities, sleep well etc. They don’t watch much tv in comparison to what I did growing up.

You don't allow your teenager to have their phone in their bedroom?

At all or just restricted times?

comoatoupeira · 11/01/2025 20:57

Bedrooms are for READING! And sleeping.

Bedrooms are for whatever you want them to be.

Beetlebumz · 11/01/2025 20:59

My dd got one around age 17 until then she watched downstairs, it’s more sociable that way, no

K0OLA1D · 11/01/2025 21:00

Mine do. 11 and 13. They have to have it off by 9.30. Had them a few years.

We have one too. Always have.

mumbruh · 11/01/2025 21:00

Dd age 7 just got a tv in her bedroom she watches it only on weekend evenings before bed though, otherwise she plays in playroom or watches tv with us.
Ds age 9 has had tv in his room for a year, only plays Xbox on it on weekends mid afternoon and sometimes watches in morning before school
