Of course Isn't that just normal?

BigDahliaFan · 12/01/2025 12:39

Yes and I like cultures where it’s the norm to wash hands before eating so there’s a sink available in restaurants or a hot hand towel….

fanaticalfairy · 12/01/2025 12:41

Shooperpooper · 12/01/2025 12:38

I bet all these non washing PP’s have got serious parasites they don’t know about haha

So what if they have? If they don't know about them and they're not causing any issues... What's the problem?

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 12/01/2025 12:43

Nope, I wash them before cooking, and during cooking etc, but if someone else has cooked then I don't tend to before eating.

Haven't had anything worse than a cold in about 2 decades either so it can't be doing me too much harm.

Yerbumsaplum · 12/01/2025 12:58

No. I wash my hands before I prepare food, after using the toilet or if I've been doing something involving potential contaminants, such as emptying the bin or handling raw meat etc. I never cease to be amazed at the number of people who prepare food without washing their hands. MIL pets her dogs, lets them slobber all over her, then wanders off to make sandwiches and doesn't bother washing her hands. For some reason, she thinks I have a very small appetite🤣

JHound · 12/01/2025 12:59

Depends on context but generally, no. I just had breakfast and did not wash my hands first.

Sagedragon · 12/01/2025 13:00

I wash them multiple times when cooking so they are clean anyway when eating.

It's an archived almost 20 year old school project. For a start, it doesn't explain how they ensured that the toilet paper didn't already have microbes on it. Just that brings the whole study into doubt.

If you are so sure that loo paper is clean and microbes don't get through, why do you bother washing after a poo and not a wee?

Seriously, you are minging, however many excuses and justifications you try to come up with. I really hope you live on your own or that anyone else you live with is equally unhygienic. At least from now on, you will probably be reminded of this thread every time you go to the loo. And I hope that fleeting thought will encourage you to wash your hands more often.

IBlameTheDog · 12/01/2025 14:11

I wash my hands when I come in the house - from work, shopping etc. ALWAYS after I've been to the loo and always before I start cooking.

Don't necessarily wash them before eating though. If I'm out and about and I'm eating with my hands I'll use an antibacterial wipe before I eat. But that's mostly because DD has emetophobia and she makes me!!

Blackalice · 12/01/2025 14:12

Yes, always. Kids always do too. We also have foam that kills norovirus etc for when we are out.

gingerlybread · 12/01/2025 14:27

People who take a pride in not washing their hands 🤮

You can carry noro, flu etc and be unsymptomatic. Remember that when you talk about having a "robust immune system". Symptoms are actually a sign of your immune system fighting off infection. So probably all you mingers are the weak Typhoid Marys passing your horrible germs to the rest of us.

Tink3rbell30 · 12/01/2025 14:28

Yes and yes. Basic hygiene. I'm always shocked that some adults don't have it 🤢 not regularly hand washing, not washing hands after the toilet etc.

Poo is riven with all sorts of pathogens. Wee is generally (but not totally) sterile unless you already have an infection.

For example, you can drink your urine in a crisis but nobody would ever dream of eating their own poo.

There are 5 of us, all equally unhygienic, all hardly ever get ill.

Tink3rbell30 · 12/01/2025 14:36

Is this a troll proudly trying to justify being minging enough not to wash their hands after using the toilet? You're wiping your gammy flaps then touching the flush that people touch after a poo. So manky, I dread to think of the overall general hygiene if it's actually serious.

This thread is about washing hands before eating, not after using the loo, which i’m assuming (hoping!) everyone does

Apparently they don't! 🤢

Probably the same sort of people who don't understand how stomach bugs/flu etc end up getting spread around so readily.

I do it frequently during food/meal prep, especially if there is any handling of raw veg (it can be contaminated by some bacteria that could possibly make you ill) and raw meat - I always make sure I clean the taps after washing my hands if they've been touched with raw meat juices, then wash my hands again after. I knew of someone who didn't do that and later on accidentally recontaminated their hands with the raw meat bacteria that was left on the taps when they made a different meal later on and they ended up with really, really grim campylobacter food poisoning.

How did they know that they caught it due to that particular sequence of events? I’m not meaning this in a confrontational way, I’m very interested to know. I’m very careful when preparing meat and turn the tap on with my elbow or wrist as I’m hyper vigilant about bacteria being spread in this way. I also pump the soap with my wrist.

MassiveSalad22 · 13/01/2025 08:31

No, and I’ve never been for example to a restaurant where my companions have popped off to wash their hands before eating so I’m sure I’m not a total grub. Kids don’t get asked to wash their hands in others’ houses either, just asked them .

Dramatic · 13/01/2025 08:35

Yes I always do, I'm not too strict with the kids if they're eating with cutlery but if it's finger food then I always make sure they do.

Peoples hand hygiene is pretty grim sometimes 🤢

honeypancake · 13/01/2025 08:47

Yes always. At home or at a restaurant. Can't eat with dirty hands even if using cutlery. Plus there is often bread and other things you eat with your hands. And we constantly touch our phones which are not clean.

FenellaFurchester · 13/01/2025 09:03

Yes and yes. I thought it was standard.

Wipes or hand gel for if we really can’t wash while we’re out.

I always tell my dc that we prioritise hand washing because we have to touch things and we can’t trust that the people who touched them before aren’t gross people who don’t wash their hands.
Considering how many people on this thread don’t wash their hands (and seem proud of it 🤢) I’m glad I do 😂

Utterly vile to not wash hands after using the toilet (for anything)

gingerlybread · 13/01/2025 09:37

Food poisoning can be caused by poor hand hygiene but tbh it's not the main culprit. If you're prepping raw meat, yes, clean the taps and sink afterwards but it's more important to keep separate chopping boards, as they are harder to clean than anything metal. Most food poisoning comes from poor storage or cross contamination but any meat that's been well cooked is actually safer than cold pasta and rice salad, or reheated rice. There are some nasty bacteria that can't be killed in those foods.
Poor hand hygiene spreads winter viruses like noro, flu and covid. And is generally vile

Crapdoor · 13/01/2025 10:06

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 11/01/2025 17:11

Why is it 'gross'? What do you think is going to happen?

I wash my hands a million times a day, which is why they are dry and my skin keeps tearing.

I ask my kids to wash their hands if they are coming from outside, after using the toilet, if i see them picking their nose (🙄), before helping me with baking (especially if it's for others) or if they are particularly dirty for some reason.

I carry hand sanitiser with me in case we are eating outside.

The person in question lived alone, hadn't eaten out anywhere recently prior to their symptoms and when they were asked by their Dr where they thought they caught it from, they then remembered that they'd been handling raw chicken a few days before and had touched the taps when they had prepared the meat, then went to prepare some other food later on that day, I think it was something like a sandwich (so had washed their hands and turned the taps off, thus recontaminating them, if that makes sense?). It was the only possible source that all of us could think of.
