To want the bedside lamp on!

Trufflebutter24 · 10/01/2025 21:23

I sometimes want to get into bed and read but my husband often gets quite annoyed by the bedside lamp light being on, he says I’m inconsiderate asking for it to be kept on. Am I blind to my inconsideration?

I can't sleep with the light on.

If my husband wanted to read, I'd remind him it's a bedroom, not a library 😁

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 10/01/2025 21:25

What time does the lamp stay on til/how long for?

I wouldn't be able to try and sleep with a light on so I get why it would be annoying but if it's early and didn't need to get up in the morning then it wouldn't be as bad.

Confusedmeanderings · 10/01/2025 21:27

What about a book light? It clips on to your book and isn't as bright as a lamp so might not disturb him as much.

KurtCobainLover · 10/01/2025 21:27

I hate having a light on whilst I’m trying to sleep. Have you thought about getting kindle so you can read without the light on?

poemsandwine · 10/01/2025 21:27

I can't sleep with any light in the room. If it's keeping him awake: YABU.

Amarree · 10/01/2025 21:27

What time?

NoahsTortoise · 10/01/2025 21:27

Sorry, I'd hate this if I was trying to go to sleep 🙈 I couldn't sleep with a lamp on.

Maybe try one of those little book lights? Or go up to bed earlier to get reading time in before your husband wants to sleep?

user2848502016 · 10/01/2025 21:28

I couldn't sleep properly with the light on. I think the person who wants to sleep gets priority in the bedroom because that is what it's for.
I solved this problem by getting a kindle - I can read on it on a low setting with the bedroom lights off and it doesn't disturb DH.

minipie · 10/01/2025 21:28

I’m with your DH I think. If you want to read in bed before sleeping then you need to go up to bed a bit earlier than your DH so the light can go off at his sleep time. Or read downstairs and come to bed later.

UndermyShoeJoe · 10/01/2025 21:28

My husband likes the tv on in bed. I can’t sleep with the tv on. I tell him if he wants to watch tv we have a perfectly good lounge with a big tv. Where he will be disrupting nobody.

He turns the tv off.

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 10/01/2025 21:29

It’s unreasonable to be in the bedroom keeping someone awake when they have made it clear they want to sleep. You could try getting a small reading light that clips onto your book, or a kindle with a light built in. That’s worked fairly well for years for me and my husband. I’ve recently discovered how good eye masks are for sleeping which has made a big difference. I would not be okay with him sitting there with a proper lamp on though, that’s very selfish. You can read somewhere else, you can’t expect someone to sleep somewhere else.

Summerbay23 · 10/01/2025 21:29

YABU I’m afraid (depending on what time). I also need the light off to sleep so that would annoy me.

totk · 10/01/2025 21:29

You could get a Kindle so you don't have to use the lamp .

Tink3rbell30 · 10/01/2025 21:30

No thanks. Read in the living room then come to bed to sleep.

Nitgel · 10/01/2025 21:30

I have a nice subtle golden bulb that doesn't disturb the other sleeper. Gives a lovely warm cosy glow but.enough to read to.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 10/01/2025 21:30

Yeah, YAB Very U.

I can't sleep with a light on. You need to either get a small, clip on reading light or use a tablet/kindle.

It's unreasonable to expect your husband to try to sleep with a light on, as I bet when you're ready to sleep you switch the light off! So it's okay for you to fall asleep in the dark but not him.

Trufflebutter24 · 10/01/2025 21:30

Off to buy a clip on light I go!

OP posts:
minipie · 10/01/2025 21:32

Clip on light would stop me sleeping too sorry. But your DH may be ok with it.

ClydeBank · 10/01/2025 21:33

I really recommend this sleep mask for your husband if he is light sensitive - it’s super comfy:

JoelyJoe · 10/01/2025 21:36

Get a Kindle with a backlight.. it's a game changer. Mine is also waterproof, so I can read in the bath too!!

Why should the person wanting to sleep In The bedroom wear a face mask so the person wanting to be awake can read in the bedroom?

If you want to be awake reading or watching tv do it in a room where people are not trying to sleep.

If He doesn’t like it he can sleep downstairs. Keep it on and read for as long as you want, it’s unfair to tell you that you can’t have it on.

BellissimoGecko · 10/01/2025 21:37

Buy a Kindle with a backlight.

Why can’t she read downstairs while he sleeps in the bed. You know the place for sleeping.

bonkers.
