To want the bedside lamp on!

Trufflebutter24 · 10/01/2025 21:23

I sometimes want to get into bed and read but my husband often gets quite annoyed by the bedside lamp light being on, he says I’m inconsiderate asking for it to be kept on. Am I blind to my inconsideration?

The person who wants to sleep gets priority.

If you want to stay awake then go into a different room or go to bed earlier.

OldTinHat · 10/01/2025 22:19

You need a Kindle Paper White thingy. No light needed.

suburburban · 10/01/2025 22:19

I remember wanting to read in bed and arguing with my dh about it.

I like to read in bed. Difficult one

FoxFaceRabbitFish · 10/01/2025 22:21

I have a Lumie light alarm clock, you can turn it down on to a really low orange glow setting which is enough to read by but doesn’t disturb my partner, maybe try that if you don’t want to use a kindle.

HereForTheAnimals · 10/01/2025 22:23

I wouldn't be able to sleep with any light on, but my DH likes the bedroom window open, I don't. My DH likes the radiator in the bedroom turned off, I don't. My DH snores which keeps me awake, I snore which keeps DH awake. We are lucky to have separate bedrooms 🤣. Is that something you could do? If not, then being respectful of each other's preferences is needed in situations like these, where they can be accommodated of course.

Silvers11 · 10/01/2025 22:23

I use an eye mask - DH likes to read in bed for a while before he drops off. I have a nice comfortable mask and it is no problem

evtheria · 10/01/2025 22:25

I love reading ('real' books so def need a good lamp) but I feel sleeping gets the priority for the bed, sorry Blush

UndermyShoeJoe · 10/01/2025 21:36

Why should the person wanting to sleep In The bedroom wear a face mask so the person wanting to be awake can read in the bedroom?

If you want to be awake reading or watching tv do it in a room where people are not trying to sleep.

I agree. Bed Is For sleeping in. If you want to read then go to bed half an hour before your DH and read. Come to an agreement about times.

Floralnomad · 10/01/2025 22:33

Get a kindle , it’s pretty anti social to have a light on , even a clip light , if someone else wants to sleep .

tapdancingmum · 10/01/2025 21:43

We both have bedside lights and mine is lit until I go to sleep which is later than DH goes to sleep. He doesn't moan unless it's really late and I remind him I don't moan when he puts his on at stupid o'clock to get dressed and wakes me up. I just turn over and go back to sleep.

I would say as long as it's not the big light he needs to turn over and sleep through it.

I don't want to be sat downstairs reading - I want to be snuggled in bed with my cuppa and my book.

Exactly

minipie · 10/01/2025 21:32

Clip on light would stop me sleeping too sorry. But your DH may be ok with it.

Me too I'm afraid. A kindle on low would be OK though.

Rainbowdottie · 10/01/2025 22:43

I must admit I wouldn't be able to sleep with the light on but then I guess it's what you're used to or not. I love going to bed early to relax, we often watch tv in bed and I will go to sleep earlier than dh, and can sleep quite happily with him still watching the tv....as long as it's not too loud. Other people will think this is odd and unreasonable I guess, if they're not used to it.
I think your dh is not asking anything unreasonable tbh

Hankunamatata · 10/01/2025 22:46

I brought kobo ereader for this very reason and you can borrow library books on it

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 10/01/2025 22:49

Hasn't it been proven in studies that light interferes with the production of the sleep hormone melatonin? Many people can't sleep well with lights on, me included. Getting ready to sleep in the dark helps with melatonin production, and therefore affects sleep quality too.

I think a 30 minute window for reading would be fair.
We all spent time instilling reading habits into our dc, especially at bedtime.
Why shouldn’t someone wind down with a book?

RampantIvy · 10/01/2025 22:54

This is why I use a kindle. I do most of my reading in bed.

KnickerlessParsons · 10/01/2025 22:56

SwanRivers · 10/01/2025 21:25

I can't sleep with the light on.

If my husband wanted to read, I'd remind him it's a bedroom, not a library 😁

Doesn't everyone read in bed before they put the light out?

I thought that was the law common practise. .

Oldbutstillachild · 10/01/2025 22:57

I love to read in bed, but I go up before my husband for this reason. I don't think it's fair to have a light on when someone else is trying to sleep. If he even uses his phone in bed it keeps me awake! Could you just go up earlier, like I do?

Wonderi · 10/01/2025 22:59

If they share a bed with someone then they need to go up to bed early if they want to read.

If their partner comes in wanting to sleep then the lights get put out and they can either go to sleep themselves or leave the bedroom.

This is another reason I always preferred separate bedrooms.

Nightmarewithdelirium · 10/01/2025 23:04

Completely depends on the time.
Are you having it on when he only has 8 hours or less of sleep time remaining?in that case you would be being unreasonable as it may keep him awake.
If he's got like a 9 hour stretch to sleep in then having the lamp on for 30 mins to read before lying down, is fine.

That's me then Grin

toomuchcheesetoomuchchocolate · 10/01/2025 23:23

I read on a Kindle for this reason as the backlight gives me enough light to read in bed without disturbing DH. I do then have a neck light for when I'm reading paper books
