I popped into waitrose on way home yesterday and they had a bag of potatoes reduced down to 25p, carrots 19p, 2 sweet corn 24p. There was trolleys filled with veg, and bread! Was about 7pm. If you have one nearby it'd be worth popping in around that time.

Normallynumb · 10/01/2025 21:55

Iceland are doing 10 items for £10 at the moment. Mix and match. Not the healthiest but will tide you over

I'm surprised at a) OP needs suggestions to budget, and b) people thinking the dd will have to ditch the trip so they can eat.

It's a perfectly reasonable budget to feed two people quite well. Does no one do meal plans or cook from scratch?

It is like anything else, these skills need to be learned. With so many people relying on ready made meals, it is hardly surprising that not everybody knows how to cook competently. You would know this if you have been on here, for any amount of time.

I could spare £20 if that would help you xx

Viviennemary · 10/01/2025 22:00

Buy potatoes, Dried pasta, cheese, eggs bread. Milk porridge. Pesto. Some veg for soup making. That should be fine for a few days.

@red5678 You're not allowed to offer cash, you'll get the thread deleted.

chakrakkhan · 10/01/2025 22:01

You can get 5 tins of Heinz soup for £5 in Asda. Asda own brand is even cheaper -50p I think. A loaf of bread is 80p. A bag of rolled oats is 90p. Cornflakes 80p. You can very easily buy a large bag of pasta or cous cous for less than £1. Frozen veg less than £1. Mince, chopped toms. Make a vat of pasta sauce.

You don't need to be healthy in an emergency. You need to be fed.

Omelettes
Beans/cheese on toast
Pasta & sauce sachets
Porridge/cereals are ok for dinner too
Soup and bread

AgnesSi · 10/01/2025 22:02

Shopping list from ASDA probably cheaper at Lidl, Aldi:
veg stock cubes .80
basic eggs x12 2.15
butter. 2.00
carrots .40
4xtinned toms 1.80
onions .99
2xspaghetti hoops .38
1kg rice 1.25
500g lentils 2.00
curry powder .95
2kg potatoes 1.35
cheddar cheese 3.15
plain yoghurt 1.10
bananas .94
gf flour 1.10
bread .75
milk 1.00

total £22.11

can make jacket potatoes with cheese, scrambled eggs, spaghetti hoops, dhal, carrot and lentil soup, Glamorgan sausages, gluten free flatbreads, Toasties, sadwiches, cheese and lentil pate, rice with dhal, lentil, onion and carrot patties with veg gravy and mash, tomato soup, yoghurt with bananas, banana fritters with yoghurt, egg fried rice with carrots and onions.. etc if you can add a tin of chickpeas, frozen spinach and peas and a small pack of chicken thighs I think you could do tasty meals for a week :)

Grammarnut · 10/01/2025 22:03

Go to Aldi or Lidl. You can buy enough for a few days and eat well. Make a menu and then make a list from it. Only buy what is on the list and you should be fine for breakfasts and dinners till Wednesday.

ScribblingPixie · 10/01/2025 22:03

My cheapies are:
Fried onion, fried peppers (those 3 for £1 bags), tinned tomatoes, any tinned beans and brown rice plus stock cube are quite a nice meal.
Fried onion, fry finely sliced white or green cabbage, add 1 cheap tin of tuna flaked, a bit of curry powder*, then water and stock cube. Cook for a couple of minutes then add in enough noodles or thin pasta for all of you.
It might sound a bit yucky but those cheap tinned sliced peaches in syrup are quite nice on porridge and make it go further.
If you can get a Greggs Too good to Go it usually as lots of lunch sandwiches as well as bread and cakes.
*If no curry powder, either coriander or cumin or both work.

Do you have a "too good to go" shop near you? My mum often gets lovely bits in those, although it's a bit pot luck what you get it might help?

No, don't do this! I have them quite regularly as I used to be a FareShare manager and food waste is my bugbear. I paid 7 quid for two from Costa the other night thinking I could feed the kids and me with toasties and sandwiches for a snack tea and between them the bags had 6 pots of porridge and 2 basic egg sarnies. I had to buy tea on top and I remember thinking then that if I was buying because of budget and hoping to feed a family I'd be goosed! It's too much of a high risk strategy if things are tight. Olio is a better bet.

Deesmond · 10/01/2025 22:07

This eve just me, and I made an omelette - secret addition : cheese. It’s filling, nutritious, and not too expensive.
Also cheap: for breakfast or whenever: porridge oats, make with milk, do in the bowl in microwave. Use Sultanas, another secret ingredient. Not sure how secret amy of this is, just things I do!
Baked potatoes, I like using humus as a filling - easy to make from tin of chickpeas, but maybe easier to just buy unless you already have tahini.
Soup made eg with a tin of chickpeas, lentils, just search soup recipes on line to align with the ingredients you have.

These are just a few cheap ideas. Avoid meat!

AhBiscuits · 10/01/2025 22:08

Surely you can put a £50 shop on a credit card until Wednesday.

No neighbours or family.

Why do people think DD should give up her trip?

Shes got an inset day and
Is planning to go to an event with friends . I work full time so its handy for me too

Because you can't afford for her to go on the trip.

I don’t think this should be that difficult, porridge and fruit or toast for breakfast, omelette with chopped onion and tomato mixed in and grated cheese on top for dinner a few nights, some pasta dishes on other nights, buy some fruit for snacks, then you just have to think what you have for lunch, it should be manageable, you could have toasted sandwiches and salads

BobbyBiscuits · 10/01/2025 22:10

Buy onion(s) chicken legs/thighs, carrots, tin of tomatoes, garlic, bread and some ham. Maybe a bit of cheese if budget allows.

Bake the chicken with carrots and onions and serve with rice.

Use leftover rice and add egg and onions and a bit of ham to make egg fried rice the next day.

Use leftover chicken and ham to make sandwiches.

Make a salad with grated carrots and oil and vinegar.

Make a ham omelette. With cheese if you have it.

Use the tomatoes and garlic and more carrots and onions to make a sauce to serve with the pasta (add ham or chicken if any left, and grated cheese if available).

Ideally hoping you've got a bit of oil and a few herbs and spices?

Why surely?
That's not the point and I'm sure if that was the case OP wouldn't be on here asking for ideas.

Ophy83 · 10/01/2025 22:13

Find out what time your local supermarkets yellow label their food, it'll be fine to freeze.

What did you get in your too good to go bag?

Radiohat · 10/01/2025 22:16

It can be done with some frugal shopping.

You can't eat wheat but I presume your daughter can.

Breakfast - porridge or eggs on toast.
Lunch - veg chilli ( just made 6 portions for about £3.50) with rice
Evening - jacket potato with cheese & beans
Other cheap dishes - omelettes, soup, stew, tuna pasta, rice & peas with fish. Jacket potatoes with almost anything. Tin fish relatively cheap , mackerel, tuna - chicken portions all are within budget.

Lentil Dall, I spent my youth skint but was able to cook on a budget , you just need to plan meals with left overs and bulk them out with fresh or frozen veg.

Get some chilli powder, curry powder & haldi powder - amazing what you can hash up on a budget
