Our weekly shop is only £40 so I think this is very doable.

ShamblesRock · 10/01/2025 21:11

How old is your DD? Can she do any jobs for a relative / neighbour/ friend for a little pocket money? Even if it was just half it would help.

sweetpickle2 · 10/01/2025 21:11

£22 for food for 4 days plus a packed lunch is very doable.

InAPickle25 · 10/01/2025 21:12

Cornflakes / cereal breakfast each day with a banana.

Lunch sandwich / beans on toast

Dinner
As the suggestions above. Or bag of frozen chips or make chips, egg , ham
Tomato pasta
Omelette
Veggie bolognese.

Ihatemondays1962 · 10/01/2025 21:12

Make a big pot of soup for lunch. Cereal/toast for breakfast. A few simple dinners like pasta orbaked potato with beans and you'll manage fine.

Ezlo · 10/01/2025 21:14

You can get smart price pasta really cheap. Get some cheap pasta sauce and some cheese.

Spaghetti hoops. Something like 22p in Asda. Lovely on toast.

Baked potatoes with beans and cheese. Lovely and very filling and fibrous.

Tinned rice pudding for afters. You can get a smartprice tin in asda for about 40p.

I'm surprised at a) OP needs suggestions to budget, and b) people thinking the dd will have to ditch the trip so they can eat.

It's a perfectly reasonable budget to feed two people quite well. Does no one do meal plans or cook from scratch?

No neighbours or family.

Why do people think DD should give up her trip?

Shes got an inset day and
Is planning to go to an event with friends . I work full time so its handy for me too

excatly, the trip is doable and the budget is doable, but it will be survival meals on supermarkets own brands versions

If there is only the 2 of you I would say that's plenty for a few days buy non branded food and get the yellow sticker meat

Sorry Im not used to having this little money. Im trying to eat some veg and i have none.

I can't eat wheat,
Cumber is £1 here in lidl

Our Lidl has £5 veg boxes on sale when the shop opens, with stock that is getting near to the best before date. I have cooked some Miguel Barclay £1 meal recipes (you can find them for free on his Instagram and some of them are on the bbc good food website) and they have been nice

ShamblesRock · 10/01/2025 21:21

I don't think she should give her trip up, it was just a win:win suggestion.

But yes, it is doable. Do you have any points / rewards on loyalty cards?

Raindropskeepfallinonmyhead · 10/01/2025 21:21

Big bag of frozen chips, eggs and baked beans?

Sorrynotsorry22 · 10/01/2025 21:22

Try the TooGood to Go app

Ubugly · 10/01/2025 21:22

Think I woiuld just do pasta and either cheap pasta sauce or Tim of tomatoes and onion and garlic and have same dinners and then toast and sandwiches from a loaf of bread

Lovelybitofsquirrel3 · 10/01/2025 21:22

I’d say she doesn’t need £10 on Monday. she can wait until you’ve got more money.

KnightsTemplar00 · 10/01/2025 21:03

depending on people to feed, chip shop regular chips are 3:50 can be shared ad eg eggs, beans ect can make a meal each night

plan 2 basic but survival meals of pasta, rice, eggs etc ( i say this because in tescos and asda they are cheap, even packet microwave rice is around 60/70p depending on flavour and whos brand it is.

plan 3 use the reduced sections at the local supermarkets and try to make a dinner, but not sure how much will last till wednesday based on price of the reduced.

Why would you waste so much money on takeaway chips when you could make your own wedges in the oven for a fraction of the price?

Because if you give her £10 you only have £20 to feed you both for a week?!

cost of wedges, then cost of gas or electric in cooking them ?

Dd is going out with friends and needs bus and entrance fee

Cant she rearrange lovey

TerrificallyTired · 10/01/2025 21:27

I think people are being pretty harsh on op. £22 is doable but is not straightforward (at least in the part of the UK I live in). Especially without bread/gluten!

if you can accept boring meals for a few days it’s OK with some planning. Like others suggested, supermarket own brands will make the difference here, along with making dinners that can last more than one meal e.g.,
-breakfasts of porridge with milk, honey, tinned fruit
-packed lunch with a sandwich and supermarket own brand fruit/crisps/yogurt/snacks
-dinners of daal and rice, economy chilli type of thing, stir fry etc
-snacks of own brand biscuits and fruit

good luck x

Im just a bit overwhelmed by the requirements of the meals and our diets (i don't eat wheat, dd doesnt eat fruit) trying to be healthy! Shes a teenager with a big appetite

Im looking at olio and too good to go now

Try baked potatoes - you can get a pack of 4 for around 80p in Tesco. I'm gluten free so also avoid wheat and they are my "go to" when I need something cheap and filling.

Have you a Coop near you? DB buys this deal often, it seems very good value

https://www.coop.co.uk/products/deals/freezer-fillers

The coop ius extremely expensive, I would never suggest them to someone on a tight budget

tearsandtiaras · 10/01/2025 21:29

I am looking at community kitchens.

I don't think we need a food bank. I don't feel comfortable using one just because Im in a sticky place at the end of the Christmas month
