Does a toaster exist which doesn’t throw crumbs everywhere?

I am on a home improvement drive. Fed up with the constant mess.

Tackling every mess making item one by one.

Please tell me a non crumby toaster exists! My one is like it has its own life. Just spreading crumbs all the time.

I am determined to find a solution!

Mumsnet wisdom please help

And one that toasts both sides equally, sick of one pale and one dark side

Turophilic · 10/01/2025 12:52

If you empty the crumb tray regularly it shouldn’t do this.

Nourishinghandcream · 10/01/2025 12:54

Our Tefal one has a crumb tray (which is emptied after every use) but the toaster itself sits on a small tray which means that no crumbs get onto the worktop.

snowflakelake · 10/01/2025 12:56

I also put my toaster on a tray to manage this issue a bit.

Hoover2025 · 10/01/2025 12:58

Okay so I need a new toaster with a crumb tray and an extra tray 😂

Anyone love their toaster?

Which one do you have @Turophilic

And as a thank you I would like to proudly announce I solved the sugar / tea station issue with a marble round (sounds fancy- imitation from dunelm) and an old school syrup dispenser for the sugar so controlled pouring and no teaspoons and sugar granules flying around.

It has worked a treat so very invested in this tackling problem areas one by one idea!

Funnily enough ours broke last week and we have a new one! (both old and new are Breville toasters)

But we only ever had crumbs when we forgot to empty the crumb tray. Most toasters have them, I believe, and most people forget about them (or don’t notice in the first place)

rainbowunicorn · 10/01/2025 13:02

I just empty the crumb tray every couple of weeks and have never had a problem with crumbs. Occasionally if there are some crumbs after toasting something I just wipe them there and then.

MatildaTheCat · 10/01/2025 13:03

My Dualit is excellent. You can choose how many slices to cook, it’s perfectly even and you can pop the toast up to check on it. The crumb tray doesn’t make any mess. I do store it on a tray so I can pull it forwards away from the wall units when it’s in use.

Had it at least 10 years and still like new.

@Hoover2025 are you sure your toaster doesn’t have a crumb tray already? They are very unobtrusive. Here are mine, at the back of the old toaster. One open, to show it clearly, and one closed.

AuntieDolly · 10/01/2025 13:07

Mine has a crumb tray and sits on another tray. I have to turn the bread halfway. Perhaps they're all made that way 😁

SporesMouldsAndFungus · 10/01/2025 13:08

I also like my Dualit toaster, and just paid to have the heating elements replaced. Must have had it for 10 or 15y.

MyDeepZebra · 10/01/2025 13:10

I've never had this issue...only ever had bog standard Tefal/Breville toasters around the £40 mark...I'd echo the concept that the crumb trays are usually well hidden and inconspicuous. Are you sure you don't have one?

I often use the grill setting on the Ninja or the actual grill in the oven for toasting too...I prefer the results!

The13thFairy · 10/01/2025 13:17

I have never met a toaster that 'throws crumbs everywhere.' The crumbs stay in their little tray. I'm afraid you should consider the possibility that your toaster is possessed.

Heronatemygoldfish · 10/01/2025 13:17

Dualit. Every time. You 'pop' it yourself so there's no flying crumbs. We've had ours 20y now. One set of replaced elements and one new timer. (They sell spares for all parts so it's about as eco as it comes.)

(And yes it also has a crumb tray)

TiramisuThief · 10/01/2025 13:29

I empty the crumb tray but it also sits on a perfectly sized steel tray which i got from IKEA so no stray crumbs escape

The toaster is just a standard 4 slice

ItsSoStimulatingBeingYourHat · 10/01/2025 13:32

Are the crumbs throwing themselves out when you remove the toast?
I’m a chaotic bugger and this is where my crumbs come from- my toaster is innocent.

sashh · 10/01/2025 13:38

I have yet to come across a toaster without a crumb tray. Have a good look.

Zinglenibber · 10/01/2025 14:07

I still made a mess of toast crumbs despite emptying the crumb tray. When my toaster broke I switched to using my grill or air fryer depending on how many slices of toast I want. No stray toast crumbs and one less appliance cluttering my counter.

Could you possibly link your IKEA tray? I'm doing an order today 😂.

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 10/01/2025 16:21

Shirley if the crumbs stayed inside the toaster they would gradually build up until you couldn't get the bread into the slot, or it caught fire when you turned it on. Perhaps escaping crumbs are a safety feature?

@Hoover2025 @losingpatiencetoday

It's the Grilltider tray but they don't seem to sell it any more - I've just gone into the website. But someone seems to be selling then on Ebay!

It's 30x20cm which is plenty big enough for any 4 slice toaster I reckon. I'm sure you could find something similar that's shallow.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 10/01/2025 17:37

It also depends on the type of bread.

The less processed, the more crumbs.
