Which way do you stand in the shower?!

So, I’ve spent my whole life facing ‘forwards’ as in, back to the mixer. And for some unknown reason today I flip it and stand facing the shower/ mixer and woah, a new world? Why did nobody tell me it’s about 2782929 times easier to wash my hair this way around 😂

got me thinking- what’s the normal way?!

I had a rainfall shower in my old house, and a handheld shower head in my current house. I've been here for three years. About a year ago, I was complaining to my friend about the tedium of washing my hair every day, so she (understandably) suggested I don't wash it every day. My view was that I shower every day, therefore my hair gets wet and I wash it too. She looked at me like I was from Mars, and said "Just lower the shower head".
I had no idea! I now wash my hair once or twice a week and my life is so much better. Rainfall showers (and obligatory wet hair) are now a rare treat in hotels for me.

Chasingsquirrels · 10/01/2025 10:18

I used to face the shower, stopped when heavily pg with dc1 as I kept burning my bump on the mixer bar.

22 years later I still face away from, other than turning round to just since my face off after washing it.

Refitted ensuite with have a rainfall shower with detachable handheld, I don't imagine it will change which way I face though.

Plus shampoo, conditioner etc are on a shelf opposite the shower mixer, so easier to face away and just reach out for them.

How are pp rinsing all over if you don't rotate?
I start off facing the shower but have it lower and stand a bit farther back if not washing my hair and then rotate.
We now have a shower cubicle, no bath as I have mobility issues and I bought a small plastic stool to put my leg on to make access easier, dh thought I was bonkers but after using it himself he thinks I'm a genius.

Of course you can 😂 the water goes all over you either way!

But it just sort of dribbles down the side that's facing away, surely you need to get the actual spray of water on each side of you?

GetyourheadoutoftheovenIris · 10/01/2025 10:37

Without being rude, Is rotating to do with the size of the person? Or is it down to how powerful the water stream is?
I don’t understand why you wouldn’t be able to wash all over without rotating?

Back to the shower but I spin around to rinse my front!
Don't like getting water in my face

Same. I rotate many times in the shower!

I hate water on my face, so I do it this way to avoid that.

My shower consists of:

  • stand with my back to the shower to wet hair
  • turn around to apply shampoo
  • turn around to rinse shampoo
  • turn around to apply shampoo
  • turn around to rinse shampoo
  • turn around to apply conditioner, then shower gel and scrub, leg shaving, etc, while conditioner sits
  • turn around to rinse conditioner
  • done

It has recently occured to me that I don't rotate all the way around - I just twist back and forth. I had to rotate fully the other day and it just felt really weird!

We have a shower with a rainfall head and a "regular" head too. Only used the rainfall once and (due to the face issue) felt like I was being waterboarded! Hated it and have never used it since! Looks pretty though! 😂

I mostly sit on the floor or sometimes even lie in the bath to wash my legs. However, I have POTS and standing isn't really friendly to me. If standing, then spinning is always the way to go to avoid any cold bits and ensure everywhere gets rinsed.

I have POTS too and love a sit down shower!

The water is hitting the back of my head and going down my back and legs. It isn’t going to reach my tummy button or under my arms.

I turn and lift my armpits to the jet, move my bust… If water and soap and hair sit in any creases, then I end up sore. I need to rinse thoroughly under my bust which can’t happen with my back to the water.

I rotate constantly like a rotisserie chicken.

I fear it’s more like a hog roast for me, but this!

This? I’m very smol (not mumsnet tiny of course but still pretty petite) and the water gets all of me? I’m so confused haha

I face the tap. The shower head faces straight down though.

I skim read this as “like a jet” and now I have the image of someone flapping their arms like a plane in the shower 😂😭 I’ve lost the plot.

I face the shower to wash my body and face away from the shower when washing my hair.

nodramaplz · 10/01/2025 11:00

I like to do 360's

nodramaplz · 10/01/2025 11:03

@Midnightjowel
How did you rinse the side you didn't put under water?

Dramatic · 10/01/2025 11:05

Not trying to be rude....but if you don't face the shower at any point how are you rinsing "down there"? 🙈

Snowmanscarf · 10/01/2025 11:05

I face the taps, as I tend to vary the temperature - cooler to begin with and then hotter.

evtheria · 10/01/2025 11:05

I flip round maybe once or twice during the shower, but slightly prefer facing it (I'm short, it hits about forehead and hair) as if facing away I find I keep having to push hair out of my face.

My dream would be the shower where there are multiple jets of water coming from all sides and above. I want to be power washed from all angles simultaneously.

Snowmanscarf · 10/01/2025 11:06

@evtheria You need to invest in a car wash!

I have a hand held one so use that and take it off to rinse everything properly

Particularly enjoyed "Rotating like a rotisserie chicken".
Having read the thread (chuckling) I have had a really good think and realised that I face the glass "curtain" (on the bath) but I rotate sort of 180 degrees (back to shower) to wash everywhere.
I have a shite electric shower on top of the bath which is neither hot nor powerful nor big enough. It upsets me.

I am just booking a weekend away and the one requirement is a walk in shower with a rainfall head!!!!

notatinydancer · 10/01/2025 11:52

Face the shower. Turn round to wash my hair.

I'm one of the rotators but I'm very tall so if I just stand still the water only hits my front or my back, depending on which way I'm facing.

It's mostly about not having a consistently cold arse, than rinsing all over. I could do that just by turning a couple of times.

MereDintofPandiculation · 10/01/2025 12:01

Back to the shower if I'm washing my hair, front if I'm not.
