To feel yuk about this duvet with no cover?

PrincessOlga · 09/01/2025 17:28

I wanted to buy a Japanese futon set for my futon-style bed (see link below). But why do the photos show someone sleeping on the bare mattress and just under the duvet? No covers? How is that supposed to work when/if you get the mattress or duvet dirty?

I would want to buy a duvet cover, but does that defeat the whole purpose of the Japanese thing? Any Japanese people or former inhabitants around??

It's just a publicity photo

It shows exactly what you are getting

It's not saying how you should use it

If they put covers on it you might assume it came with them

It also makes the photos look simpler and clearer

This!

I wonder how some people manage daily life 😂

Exactly what I was going to say!

MyDeepZebra · 09/01/2025 17:36

It's just showing you what you're buying...it's up to you to source a cover.

GustyGertie · 09/01/2025 17:39

Jolly japes

YeGodsandLittleFishies · 09/01/2025 17:41

I’ve stayed in Japan and used sets exactly like the one shown.

They all came with pillow slips, duvet covers and sheets.

Catza · 09/01/2025 17:46

I went to uni in Japan. They definitely have covers. I also used to sell stuff on Amazon and one of the requirements for the listing is that you need to accurately represent the item sold so you can't include any other "props" unless explicitly stated what exactly is included in the package.

dementedpixie · 09/01/2025 17:53

In the care instructions it tells you to use covers

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 09/01/2025 18:02

Just put covers on it. They haven't shown the futon or duvet with covers on because they would then get a million customer complaints that the covers as shown in the picture didn't arrive.

Japanese people absolutely do use mattress and duvet covers. Odd to make that sort of assumption based on one Amazon product photo.

suki1964 · 09/01/2025 18:45

Does make me wonder how some people get a vote

Kashmiri24 · 09/01/2025 18:48

You don’t seriously think this is meant to be used with no bed linen? The photos are to illustrate the size and what the set consists of.

MaggieBsBoat · 09/01/2025 18:49

I think people are being snide and unfair to OP. How would she know if she’s never used a futon?

I’ve lived across the world and I can bet every single one of you would not know something about various things that you would like to use in the UK.

OP as above just use the standard sheets/bedding you would normally use in the UK. And ignore pompous know it alls.

ErinAoife · 09/01/2025 19:01

HOW TO CARE

The futon mattress is not washable. Use with a futon mattress cover, and wash the cover to keep your sleeping environment clean.

It is written on the description that you need a cover.

CrashThere · 09/01/2025 19:08

I have one and I use a duvet cover.

CrashThere · 09/01/2025 19:17

If you look on bed sites, when they show mattresses, the photos don't show sheets.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 09/01/2025 19:26

@PrincessOlga the same can also be said for vendors of mattresses and pillows! they never have sheets or pillow cases on them! horrible

Bumcake · 09/01/2025 19:37

They won’t come round and strip your bed if you put sheets on.

lurchermummy · 09/01/2025 20:03

Not at all relevant but my parents bought me a futon when I was about 18 because they were trendy then and it was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept on.

FabuIous · 09/01/2025 20:09

See this duvet here - also no cover on it

amzn.to/4hawVga

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 09/01/2025 22:06

They want to show you what the futon and duvet look like when in use, so they can't put covers on for the photos.

ChaChaChaChanges · 09/01/2025 22:09

Christ alive.

It's not being a 'pompous know it all' (how thoroughly nasty to even say that @MaggieBsBoat ) to call someone out on their assumption that other cultures are sooo alien they wouldn't just use sheets and pillowcases - the subconscious assumption comes across loud and clear that who the hell knows what those weird and probably dirty foreigners do.

Go look up the term 'othering'. And give your head a wobble.

oakleaffy · 09/01/2025 23:04

Surely, SURELY people cannot be so silly!

Just staggering how bad basic lack of common sense is.

Of course futons have mattress protectors sheets, just as duvets and pillows have washable covers .

One really wonders about standards of comprehension in U.K. these days.

That’s some ridiculousness right there. What a reach. Othering? Not at all. And some cultures actually don’t. I’ve lived in like 8 different countries and all do some things which in the UK would be considered odd or questionable. Acknowledging different social norms and asking about them is not in the least othering. It is simply asking. I suggest you also look up othering, work out where you see it and do whatever that wobbling thing is you are talking about. What is that again? Am I othering you by not getting it? SMH.
