To feel yuk about this duvet with no cover?

I wanted to buy a Japanese futon set for my futon-style bed (see link below). But why do the photos show someone sleeping on the bare mattress and just under the duvet? No covers? How is that supposed to work when/if you get the mattress or duvet dirty?

I would want to buy a duvet cover, but does that defeat the whole purpose of the Japanese thing? Any Japanese people or former inhabitants around??

Maybe OP works for the company and wants lots of clicks.

Or maybe there really are people who really do need to see 'serving suggestion' on a pack of frozen peas which shoes peas next to a steak.

DiscoBeat · 10/01/2025 13:44

To be fair to the OP they obviously want to use a cover with it and maybe it was clumsily worded but maybe someone helpful who uses covers can advise the best ones to fit.

It's not being a 'pompous know it all' (how thoroughly nasty to even say that @MaggieBsBoat ) to call someone out on their assumption that other cultures are sooo alien they wouldn't just use sheets and pillowcases - the subconscious assumption comes across loud and clear that who the hell knows what those weird and probably dirty foreigners do.

Go look up the term 'othering'. And give your head a wobble.

What a rubbish statement. Different cultures do things differently. Doesn’t mean that they are dirty. One of the items in that listing is called a comforter so somebody might assume that it is used without a cover, as American comforters for example are used without covers. It doesn’t mean Americans are dirty, they just shove their comforters in the mahoosive washing machines.

BilboBlaggin · 10/01/2025 19:17

It's not marketed as a duvet, it's described as a comforter, which is more like a bedspread. Nothing stopping you putting a cover on it though if that's your preference,

Pinetreethree · 10/01/2025 19:37

If they pictured it with covers to show how it would look, they'd no doubt be inundated with complaints from people raging that the covers didn't arrive with it!

3luckystars · 10/01/2025 22:26

I thought it was one of those futon/sofas was wondering if she meant: do you leave the covers on during the day when it is being used as a sofa or do you have to dress the bed every single night or do you just sleep on it like your man in the ad.

But it’s just a soft foldy mattress is it?

HPandthelastwish · 10/01/2025 22:34

It says under product specification

Product Care Instructions

Not washable (dry in the sun frequently). Recommend to use covers.

Itsanewnameeveryday · 11/01/2025 01:05

I just spent an extended period in a traditional house in Japan. The futon, quilt and pillow were stacked in the corner on the reed mats each morning. The was also a modern Japanese product of high density foam which folded out to go under the futon.
The homeowner had an artful mix of drill covers for the futons, thick cotton covers for the quilts and soft linen covers for the pillows.
I think most of the covers were from Muji.
You’d be probably better off buying a quality futon, a quilt and a comfortable pillow rather than a set - I didn’t see anyone using sets like these and the pillow looks a bit hard to me.

I think people are being snide and unfair to OP. How would she know if she’s never used a futon?

I’ve lived across the world and I can bet every single one of you would not know something about various things that you would like to use in the UK.

OP as above just use the standard sheets/bedding you would normally use in the UK. And ignore pompous know it alls.

Has op never bought a duvet?? Also depicted without covers…

There are some very bitchy comments on here. OP was asking about something she wasn't aware of and the superior knowledge brigade pile on as if she is stupid.
I expect there are many of you who have asked things on threads that others find silly, I doubt you are all perfect so take a look at yourselves first.

TunipTheVegimal24 · 11/01/2025 13:10

It is gross OP - Bedsheets all the way!!

TriesNotToBeCynical · 11/01/2025 14:51

I believe you can get duvets which are easily washable and intended for use without a cover ( thought this is not one of them), so the OP was asking a perfectly reasonable question.
