Dd is just turning 9 and thinks her bedtime is too early. She goes to bed at 7 does this sound too early on a school night?

Just to add she goes up at 7 and has a dvd to watch while she falls asleep.

Bed or sleep?

My 8 year old goes up at 7.30pm, showers etc. In bed for 8pm. Reads until lights off at 8.30pm

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 08/01/2025 20:14

Our 9 year old goes to bed at 8.30 / asleep by 9 and she wakes naturally at 7. Seems to be enough for her.
Will be different for each child I guess.

VictorianScreenTime · 08/01/2025 20:15

My 8.5 year old goes up just before 8pm and then reads till 8.30pm. Then lights out.

Purpleturtle46 · 08/01/2025 20:16

My 8 year old never falls asleep before 9.30pm. She is a night owl. Doesn't wake until 8.30-9am if left to sleep on.

ThriveIn2025 · 08/01/2025 20:17

Mine watches tv with us and then bed at 8.15. She says she struggles to get to sleep “so early” but the reality is I have to wake her for school every morning.

GreenGrass28 · 08/01/2025 20:17

My 9 year old goes to bed 8/8.30pm and will often read for a bit in bed, so is probably falling asleep around 9pm. Although I'm a huge advocate for children getting enough sleep, I have noticed a big change in how much sleep he seems to need in the last 12 months. Initially I battled against it, but he'd just lay awake for ages before nodding off, now he goes to bed a bit later and goes to sleep quickly. Hasn't impacted wake ups (wakes up at 7.30pm) for school and tends to sleep in extra at weekends.

DS1 nearly 9 - 9.30. Up at 7 usually.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 08/01/2025 20:19

I don’t think watching a dvd to go to sleep is helpful.

StillweriseLH · 08/01/2025 20:19

Mine wouldn’t be home from activities at 7pm

8pm with an 8.30pm actual sleep time was more like it.

the NHS recommends 9-12 hours for 6-12 year olds. So if we assume say 10.5 hours as a mid point for the mid age point, then unless she’s up at 5.30am every day 7pm is quite early.

nellythe · 08/01/2025 20:27

At 9 years old bed time was 8:30/9pm here. I don’t allow screens to fall asleep to though - I don’t understand that idea.

Lamplighting · 08/01/2025 20:29

That does seem early to me! My 8 year old goes to bed about 8.30/9. Often later in the summer/ during the holidays. Are they tired at that time?

User1786 · 08/01/2025 20:32

Seems a bit early but depends entirely on wake up times. When 9 my twins would go to bed as in lights out at 930-1000 but didn’t need to get up till 0700-0730. Daughter usually went straight to sleep and son took half an our or so

User1786 · 08/01/2025 20:32

Weekends and holidays later

MumonabikeE5 · 08/01/2025 20:32

I would be very pleased my 9yo did that, but he has sports clubs til 8pm 3 nights and so he goes to be at 9-9.30 and sleeps til 7.45

delphinedupont · 08/01/2025 20:34

8 year old DS goes to bed between 7-7:30 depending on activities, homework, time of dinner etc. On a weekend I’ll stretch this to 8-8:30. If ever he isn’t tired he can have reading time for half an hour or so, but I don’t let him come downstairs or wander about. He generally wakes up at 7am.

starrynights8 · 08/01/2025 20:35

It does seem a bit early then. She isn't tired at 7 but she has trouble sleeping and as a result is tired in the morning so I thought get to bed early and get a good nights sleep but she's saying it's too early.
The dvd is just to help get off to sleep.
Perhaps we'll try a bit later and see how she gets on.

Depends what time they have to wake up and how much sleep they need. Mine needs 11 hours so I like him asleep by 8:30, into bed at 8, up at 7:30

TankFlyBossWalkJamNittyGrittyIAmFromAMidSizeCity · 08/01/2025 20:36

9yo dd goes to bed at 8.30, asleep by 9.30 and up at 5.30. Weekends she's asleep by 10.30ish and up at 5.30.

Starlight40 · 08/01/2025 20:36

9pm. She is up at 6.20am to get ready to leave for school. I work at her school and run the breakfast club so it is very early. She never seems naggy though. She is very chilled. I do think it is because she is our 3rd child. I'm a bit more relaxed about bedtime.

starrynights8 · 08/01/2025 20:36

We're up at 7 so quite an early start.

My 6 year old is 8.30. My 11 year old is 9.30. We get up at 7.

PigInAHouse · 08/01/2025 20:39

My 9 year old goes at 8.30pm. She was at football training until 8pm tonight and is at dance class until 7.30pm on a Thursday so it would be a struggle to get her down earlier.

Blev2022 · 08/01/2025 20:42

OP could it be that she has trouble sleeping because she's going to bed when she's not tired then tossing and turning? Or has this always been an issue?

Beetlebumz · 08/01/2025 20:45

Ds lights out at 8.30 asleep by about 8.50. Up at 7.
