What time do you put your 9 year old to bed?

Dd is just turning 9 and thinks her bedtime is too early. She goes to bed at 7 does this sound too early on a school night?

OP could it be that she has trouble sleeping because she's going to bed when she's not tired then tossing and turning? Or has this always been an issue?

And watching a DVD!

OP work on the sleeep hygiene... cut out the screens, try reading with her 7-7:30 and then lights out.

It does seem early to me but mine is still at jujitsu/cubs/football until at least 7.30 three nights a week. He goes to bed at 9ish.

That’s why it seems early to me too, we’ve got 3 clubs that finish at 7/7:15 so we’d never see her with a 7:30 bedtime!

canonlydoblue · 08/01/2025 22:15

My nine year old goes up at 8.30 and is allowed to read until he falls asleep. He wakes at seven for school. No screens allowed before bed.

JustsoyouknowImnotlying · 08/01/2025 22:16

My 8 year old goes around 9.30, asleep by 10ish. Up at 7.30/45am. Later at weekends and on holidays. He wouldn't go to sleep if we sent him any earlier.

greenjojocat · 08/01/2025 22:17

Maybe consider something screen free like an audio player. We have a Yoto and my DS8 has used it every night for nearly 4 years to help him get to sleep. He goes up at 8, we usually read until 8.30ish

It does seem a bit early then. She isn't tired at 7 but she has trouble sleeping and as a result is tired in the morning so I thought get to bed early and get a good nights sleep but she's saying it's too early.
The dvd is just to help get off to sleep.
Perhaps we'll try a bit later and see how she gets on.

7pm is way too early. Reading or an audiobook js much better than watching a movie before bedtime.

MightyGoldBear · 08/01/2025 22:26

My 10 year old goes between 7pm and 7.30 listening to a audible book. Might stay up a little later 8pm /8.30 as the weekend but can't do this too often as he starts to get overtired.

Mine have always got up early regardless of bedtimes and I've never had to wake any of them up.

TrixieFatell · 08/01/2025 22:30

My youngest who is 8 goes to bed at 9pm, reads for a few mins then is out like a light. He sleeps until 740am usually. He's always had that amount of sleep, putting him to bed early meant him getting up early. He is always full of energy so it works for him.

We have a no screen policy in bed, he reads his book and that sends him to sleep

Macaroni46 · 08/01/2025 22:33

Sounds ridiculously early for her age plus watching a DVD before bed isn't great.

whyamiawakestillitssolate · 08/01/2025 22:39

My 8 year old goes up at 7:30 ish with the aim of being in bed and lights out by about 8:15 - she has to be up by 6:45 as we leave for school at 7:30 and it’s always hard work getting her out of bed in the morning.

Dramatic · 08/01/2025 22:42

9yo step daughter goes to bed at about 8, usually falls asleep really quickly.

I do think 7 is quite early and you'd be best trying to drop the dvd, it's not a good habit to have.

LBOCS2 · 08/01/2025 22:43

My 8yo (nearly 9) goes to bed at 9.15. Usually asleep by 9.30.

None of my children have ever had a 7pm bedtime. We both work and wouldn't see them if that was the case.

FlatStanley50 · 08/01/2025 22:51

Mine is lights out at 9ish, normally asleep by 9:30/10, up at 0700. Any earlier would be a frustrating waste of time for all of us.

PurpleThistle7 · 08/01/2025 22:52

It really depends on if they're getting up on time and cheerfully. My son (8) doesn't need anywhere near as much sleep as my daughter )
(12) so he often goes to bed after her or gets up hours before her. Every kid is different.

He goes to bed at 9 and up for 7 nowadays. At the same age she was in bed for 8

ballettap · 08/01/2025 22:55

Some nights my DD isn't back from classes til almost 7pm then has to have dinner. In bed between 8.30/9pm but won't fall asleep straight away. No idea how as she is up for school every morning then afterschool care then clubs x4 a week - just a night owl I think!

I remember my parents used to make me go to bed early (although no TV) and I would spend ages just tossing and turning not ready to sleep. Even worse in the summer when I could hear other children out playing and the room was still light with no blackout curtains!

BizzyMissy · 08/01/2025 22:55

My 9 year old has lights out around 8.15pm in term time and is up around 7.15am.

IDoLikeToBeByTheSea · 08/01/2025 22:56

In bed with lights off by 8.30/8.40. Up at 6.30 on school days.

12purplepencils · 08/01/2025 22:57

7pm seems early for a 9yo and falling asleep to a dvd is a bad habit to get into, can you switch to an audio book?

mine is upstairs at 8/8.30, lights off by 9.

Oh an audio book is a great idea!

it depends what time you need them to be up. A lot of people who’ve responded to you have children getting up quite late - if yours don’t need to be getting up until 7/730 like others here then you can probably push your child’s bedtime later.

Or what time they wake up. DS1 was a late sleeper and late riser (comparatively, for each age) from babyhood. DS2 has always got tired earlier and woken earlier - he went through that horrendous toddler phase of 5.30am to 5.45am every morning, and if he was put to bed later still woke at WTF o clock but was grumpy and tired with it. Even aged 10, DS2 will leap out of bed full of the joy of living, eager to attack his day <😴> He doesn't need to wake until 7.45am, but there's snow in hell before he sleeps in that late, it's usually 7.30am at the latest. I am totally a night owl, and was soothed into a false sense of security by toddler DS1 waking at 8.30am at the absolute earliest.

VegTrug · 08/01/2025 23:24

@starrynights8 7????? Bloody hell. That is very early. My 9yr old & I wouldn't get any time to play together on an evening if she went to bed at 7!
DD's bedtime is 9:30

VegTrug · 08/01/2025 23:27

moleeye · 08/01/2025 20:46

My 10 year old DD goes up at 7, she usually reads/fannys around til 730 then is asleep by about 735.

She's up at 7 - she loves her bed

7 at ten years old? Wow. There's still kids playing outside here until 8, 9 in the spring & summer

TizerorFizz · 09/01/2025 00:20

My DD at 10 was doing some sport after school, piano lessons, string orchestra and choir. Going to bed at 7 was never on. Busy dc just don’t need that amount of sleep. 12 hours is a lot at 10. Y7 boarding school lights out was 9pm. Y8 was 9.30. My DDs had stamina!

HotCrossBunplease · 09/01/2025 00:32

I cannot picture how a DVD would be set up to help her get to sleep, how can she be lying down with head on the pillow and still see a screen?

Funnily enough TV gets me to sleep very effectively, as I invariably fall asleep on the sofa in front of the TV! But I am 51!

To answer the question my 8 year old is in bed at 8:30 and would find 7 very early, he’s at after school club till 6 most days.

IHateMozzies · 09/01/2025 00:50

Bed is around 10 pm nowadays 😬
