Dd is just turning 9 and thinks her bedtime is too early. She goes to bed at 7 does this sound too early on a school night?

I don’t have children but I do run a brownie unit (girls 7-10 years old) from 6.15pm-7.30pm. The eldest girls go to bed by 8.30pm and the younger ones once they get home so around 8pm. I know this as they like to complain to us particularly if they have older siblings who get to stay up later.

moleeye · 08/01/2025 20:46

My 10 year old DD goes up at 7, she usually reads/fannys around til 730 then is asleep by about 735.

She's up at 7 - she loves her bed

coxesorangepippin · 08/01/2025 20:46

DS is 11 (just turned) and DD is 8 (just turned) and they're both bedded down by 8pm

MassiveSalad22 · 08/01/2025 20:47

7:30, reads and has an audiobook, usually falls asleep by 8. Never had to wake him up in my life, he’s always up around 6.

Am805463 · 08/01/2025 20:50

It does seem early to me but mine is still at jujitsu/cubs/football until at least 7.30 three nights a week. He goes to bed at 9ish.

Anononony · 08/01/2025 20:50

4yo (nearly 5) into bed at 9pm, 11yp (nearly 12), 9.30pm. Eldest gets up at 7am to leave the house for 8, youngest gets up at 8am.

Totally depends on the child, mine wouldn't go to sleep if we sent them up earlier. Fri/Sat and school holidays bedtime is 10-10.30 for both

TizerorFizz · 08/01/2025 20:55

Never as late as 10 or 10.30 - we wanted some time without DC! So school days 9pm for 9-10 years old at the latest. Mostly 8.30 pm if no activities. 7 pm? Never. Not even ax young children. They were not tired at 7 and often DH would not be home.

Fontainebleau007 · 08/01/2025 20:55

8 and 10 year old in bed between 8/8:30 watching a film or reading and asleep by about 9:30

Paradoes · 08/01/2025 20:58

approx 9 (get ready for bed before then)

I say this kindly but I wouldn’t use a dvd or screen before bed. A book and her lamp on or something is better ( not in any way judging but I think the screen isn’t good before bed)

HoneyBadgersClaws · 08/01/2025 21:02

I have a 9yo daughter. She is in bed for 7.30, reads for 15 minutes, listens to audible for half an hour and that goes off around 8.15. Sometimes she drifts straight off, more usually she gets to sleep around 9 but lays there quietly. sometimes she wakes earlier, but usually I have to wake her at 7.15.

Hayley1256 · 08/01/2025 21:04

Dd8 goes to bed between 8.30-9.30, we're also up at 7. I'd hardly get quality time with her if she went to sleep at 7

Moonshine5 · 08/01/2025 21:04

DVD will serve to stimulate your DD.
Try an audio book

AGreatUsername · 08/01/2025 21:06

My 8 year old goes up at around 7.15, reads until maybe 7.45. Wakes up 7am. He needs way more sleep than my other kids needed at his age and although he's desperate for a later bedtime he can't cope with the tiredness (still wakes at 7 regardless!)

Nollybolly6 · 08/01/2025 21:06

My 4 year old goes to bed at 7:30

Vettrianofan · 08/01/2025 21:08

8pm he falls asleep but in bed around 7.15pm to listen to stories/ read books.

StrawHatLuffy · 08/01/2025 21:08

9 year old - 9-12 hours sleep

Whatever time they have to be up in a morning, they should be asleep 9-12 hours before then.
My kid gets up at 7 to get ready for school etc so if she were 9 I'd want her asleep by 8/9pm that seems a fair middleish between 9 and 12 hours.

CriticalOverthinking · 08/01/2025 21:09

Upstairs by 7:30/8, asleep by 9. she wakes at 5:30/6 naturally so I don't like her going to sleep any later or she's emotional the next day! although some nights I've found her still reading later because the book was 'too good to stop'.
She has said her bedtime is earlier than her friends who will be up until 10 or 11 but imo that's way too late for that age if they're up earlier for school.

My 5yo is an early riser too and often asks to go to bed from 6.

DeffoNeedANameChange · 08/01/2025 21:10

Start going up, teeth, Pj's etc about 7.15, aim to be in bed by 7.30. We read one chapter of our book together with his sister, usually finished 7.45ish then he listens to an audio book. Ideally he's asleep by 8/8.15, 8.30 would be too late for him (he gets up at 6)

LondonLawyer · 08/01/2025 21:13

10 yr old goes downstairs at 8.15pm, messes about for a bit, brushes his teeth, washes, etc, then either audio book or reads for 30 mins, so light off just before 9pm.

GiddyRobin · 08/01/2025 21:14

My 8 year old is usually in bed around 8.30/9 of a week day. He reads for a while and usually asleep by 9.30. Up at 7. Weekends he stays up later. We're a family of night owls here, I was the same when I was his age.

Shiningout · 08/01/2025 21:14

7 seems too early for a 9 year old tbh with a wake up time of 7am. If she was tired at that time then fine but she's clearly not so why not push it to half 7 and see if that helps

Mumistiredzzzz · 08/01/2025 21:15

Seems early. My 5 year old goes to bed just before 7

BlanketRain · 08/01/2025 21:16

starrynights8 · 08/01/2025 20:35

It does seem a bit early then. She isn't tired at 7 but she has trouble sleeping and as a result is tired in the morning so I thought get to bed early and get a good nights sleep but she's saying it's too early.
The dvd is just to help get off to sleep.
Perhaps we'll try a bit later and see how she gets on.

Trouble sleeping because you let her watch DVDs in bed.

GivingUpFinally · 08/01/2025 21:17

9 yo is in bed by 8.15 lights out at 8.45 the latest and wakes naturally between 6.45 and 7 am. Allowed 9pm bedtimes on Fridays or special occasions.

MsTeatime · 08/01/2025 21:17

My 9 year old goes between 7:30/8.
