Dd is just turning 9 and thinks her bedtime is too early. She goes to bed at 7 does this sound too early on a school night?

9 yo is in bed by 8.15 lights out at 8.45 the latest and wakes naturally between 6.45 and 7 am. Allowed 9pm bedtimes on Fridays or special occasions.

My toddler has a 7.15 bed time

Clearinguptheclutter · 08/01/2025 21:19

My 9yo (nearly 10, y5) is a proper night owl. I try and get him upstairs at 9, I never get him to agree to turn light off before 10.30

thaf said he gets up for school at 8 with no difficulty. He def gets enough sleep.

I have a 6 & 11 year old and we often haven’t even sat down to dinner yet by 7. 6 year old usually asleep by 9:30, 11 year old more like 10-10:30. Some of my older ones activities at that age didn’t finish before 7:30 or 8:30pm. So seems very early to me. I’d probably focus less on the time and more on the falling asleep independently without watching tv. Ultimately, there will soon be birthday parties and sleepovers and evening activities she’ll want to participate in, so a later bedtime may work better.

7pm? My 8 year olds footy training starts then! Too early.

buttonousmaximous · 08/01/2025 21:25

Age 9 Bed at 830 (as in lights off) usually asleep in 15/20 min and up 6-630

soberserene · 08/01/2025 21:29

On a school night DD9 is in bed to read or relax around eight and is ideally sleep by 9. She wakes around half past seven, however she will sleep in at the weekends so we are relaxed about letting her stay up until as late as 10.30. Works for us.

This is the same as us DD yr6 she will read though before lights out, she also listens to audio books.

DH works shifts and often till 10pm so it has always suited us.

I was going to say my 9 year old trains 7-8 but it has been at the same time since he was 6.

Tweensandterribletwos · 08/01/2025 21:40

Half 8 on school nights, 9 at the weekend/school holidays

JimHalpertsWife · 08/01/2025 21:41

I think 7pm is too early, and I think falling asleep with the tv on is a really bad habit for a child to develop.

Ihaveoflate · 08/01/2025 21:47

My 5 year old doesn't fall asleep until 7:30 or even 8pm some nights and is up at 6:30, so a 7pm bedtime seems very early for a 9yo.

The blue light from a TV screen could really be affecting your DD's ability to fall asleep. Try stopping screens an hour before bedtime.

WWY · 08/01/2025 21:48

The DVD is not going to help her to sleep. I'm sorry but that's a terrible idea. Get her to go up and read. That makes you sleepy.

KvotheTheBloodless · 08/01/2025 21:48

Screen time at bedtime is bad for her, you need to knock that on the head first. Try an audio book (a yoto would be great). TV in a child's room is usually a very poor idea.

GG1986 · 08/01/2025 21:53

My 9 year old goes up around 8 on a weeknight, we usually play a board game or read and chat until 9, I would say she is usually asleep by 9.30 then up for school just before 8am. Goes to bed later on a weekend and can sometimes sleep in until 8.45/9

DevilledEgg · 08/01/2025 21:53

The dvd is probably doing more harm than good. Screens should be off an hour before they go to sleep because they inhibit melatonin production. Perhaps suggest TV till 7.30, then read or play quietly for an hour, sleep at 8.30.

SchoolDilemma17 · 08/01/2025 21:55

Bed at 8ish
sleep at 8.30

screen time is bad before bedtime, it’s overstimulation. Try audiobooks or reading.

MrsSunshine2b · 08/01/2025 21:55

7 is far too early and putting a DVD on is just going to decrease the quality of her sleep. At 9, SD went to bed at 8:30 and could read as long as she wanted, but rarely stayed up past 9.

Blarn · 08/01/2025 21:58

Dd is 9, 10 very soon and still goes up about 7:15. Gets ready for bed, settled in about 7:45. She still, adorably, likes me to sing her bedtime song and then she reads until about 9. We've tried later but she just gets grumpy and is tired the next day. She doesn't s fall asleep until a bit after 9 but seems to need that quiet hour before she drifts off.

ReadingSoManyThreads · 08/01/2025 22:03

Usually around 10pm. I personally think 7pm is way too early, if they're up at 7am they need around 10hrs sleep so you'd want to be looking at falling asleep for 9pm, so say in bed for 8.30pm.

cadburyegg · 08/01/2025 22:06

I get my almost 10 year old in bed by 9.30 and even that's a struggle sometimes. I think he is still awake now

Pogpog21 · 08/01/2025 22:06

it depends what time you need them to be up. A lot of people who’ve responded to you have children getting up quite late - if yours don’t need to be getting up until 7/730 like others here then you can probably push your child’s bedtime later.

watchuswreckthemic · 08/01/2025 22:12

Around 815/830 at nearly 9. She's up at 620 (her choice) the vast majority of the time naturally including weekends.
Envy the ones who have sleepers past this time!

newyearnewme25 · 08/01/2025 22:12

8.30-9pm, up at 7am

Any earlier and other than.m nights where she is particularly more tired she would spend hours coming up and down stairs saying she wasn't tired and couldn't fall asleep.

My DC could do with being asleep by 8.30pm consistently but they get home late too

adviceneeded1990 · 08/01/2025 22:13

Bed at 8:30 and reads her kindle or listens to audiobook on Alexa until 9. Up around 7:30 to leave house at 8:15.

My daughter since the age of 2 has gone to bed at 7.30pm, she is flying at school, she is age 5 now. I think you should put the bedtime date to 7.45 personally
