Rachel from accounts has crashed the economy

Almn0etd · 07/01/2025 21:01

So borrowing costs are now even higher than when Liz Truss was around.

The economy is well and truly cooked and in a far worse shape now that Rachel accounts is in charge.

Why isn’t this dominating the news cycle? Because it’s Labour.

The Tories were atrocious. Labour are an indescribable disaster for this country, surpassing the lowest of the low bars. Cue Labour apologists who don’t mind being made poorer and having the country destroyed, as long it’s Labour doing it to them.

I think Rachel from Accounts is a reference to her inflated CV. She's not an economist.

She's worked for the Bank of England and been involved in business committees, shadow treasury minister, work and pensions. She studied PPE at Oxford then an MSc in Economics from LSE

Hunt has an MA in PPE from Oxford and taught English in Japan

Kwarteng has a BA in classics and history from Cambridge. His Phd might be on economic history but his thesis is based on 1695 so not sure how helpful that is

Zahawi has a degree in chemical engineering. He did found Yougov so can run a business

Sunak- ppe at Oxford. Business administration mba at Stanford and worked for a hedge fund

Philip Hammond, PPE again then director of a healthcare company

George Osborne BA in Modern History then journalism until becoming an MP

To suggest Reeves is less qualified as chancellor than the six men that came before her is misogynistic.

No-one has suggested that Reeves is less qualified than her male predecessors.

She is not as dire as Kwasi I give her that. Osborne’s austerity budget triggered the 2010 riots and Brexit. There are different was of being shit.

Which they inherited after years of Labour mismanagement- remember Gordon Brown’s note?
None of the current cabinet are fit to govern, they are just self-serving liars who will drag us down further than we thought it possible to go.

Time for this again. We’re all tired of the note which has been explained on here ad nauseum.

What note was that, @Olderkids ?

I am genuinely concerned that labour are going to drive this country to be a third-world country.

I completely agree - and calling her "Rachel from accounts" is hardly sexist - just reference to the blatant lies on her CV.

How Starmer is still in power is beyond me.

FYI, I'm not a reform voter before anyone accuses me, I actually voted Labour in the last election and feel mighty stupid now.

Why would he not be after 6 months?
There's 14 years of disastrous austerity economic policy to fix. Country economies are like supertankers, you can only change direction slowly a few degrees at a time. We are obviously heading in a better direction now the bullshitting idealogues have been given the boot. You want miracles, pray for them.

It was Liam Byrne's note. It was a joke. God, are people still trotting that one out?

Eta: It was actually a Lib Dem not Tory who apologised for weaponising it whilst in coalition with the Tories. So no Tory ever apologised.

This is absolutely correct.

Governments of any and all colours are flogging a dead horse trying to fix our bin fire economy unless they do something about Brexit.

But that’s too sensible a conversation for this country. Absolutely everybody knows this has been a monumental mistake but very few people who created it want to admit they were wrong.

Correct.

lovescats3 · 07/01/2025 23:09

Is that you Elon ?

UpMyself · 07/01/2025 23:09

Exactly, @PandoraSox , only now they attribute it to someone else.

To be fair I’ve never seen it attributed to Brown before.

orangewasp · 07/01/2025 23:14

The problem with a lot of people on this thread is the same as the last govt. Short termism - they expect and want quick wins over long term thinking and solutions. Starmer is a serious politician who is trying to fix issues that go back years and set us on a good course for the future.

They got a hard job but I'm confident we're heading in the right direction

We had it for years from Cameron and Osbourne and you’re still saying it. 🤷‍♀️

Penguinmouse · 07/01/2025 21:07

“Rachel from Accounts” is just misogynistic claptrap but go off I guess.

I don’t think this is misogynistic at all, it’s been very well documented that she embellished her CV, she doesn’t get a free pass just because she is a woman. That doesn’t make this nick name misogynistic though.l

Olderkids · 07/01/2025 23:18

UpMyself · 07/01/2025 23:06

What note was that, @Olderkids ?

‘There is no money left’, on his desk in Downing Street.
If it had been possible at the time he would probably have added laughing emojis.

hedgehogsinthehedgerow · 07/01/2025 23:18

I think the most criticism of the Chancellor comes from very rich newspaper owners and other extremely rich people who don't want their children to pay inheritance tax, and middle aged blokes who can't bear the thought of a woman in this role.

How can they fix urgent things like school buildings and NHS without raising some money. It seems like an impossible task. They at least need a chance to get on with it.

midgetastic · 07/01/2025 23:19

Gosh what would you think would be better ?

PandoraSox · 07/01/2025 23:20

Olderkids · 07/01/2025 23:16

Just as we are sick and tired of ‘what we’ve inherited…’

It is only seven months since Labour got in. We had to hear about that note for 14 looooooong years.

The Tories were also blaming Labour for everything for a LOT longer than 7 months.

Rewindpresse · 07/01/2025 23:23

Fuck off with the misogyny. Rachel Reeved, the first female chancellor, is significantly better qualified than most of her predecessors by academic and professional background. It’s been 6 months and she’s been dealt an extremely difficult hand.

PandoraSox · 07/01/2025 23:24

Olderkids · 07/01/2025 23:18

You have the story all wrong. The note was from the outgoing Chief Secretary to the Treasury (Byrne) to the incoming one(Laws).

Interesting footnote: Laws had to resign after only 17 days.

TempestTost · 07/01/2025 23:25

I do think it's in the news a fair bit.

However, it's interesting to compare how the media is talking about what Labour is doing with the economy now, and how they treated what was going on under Liz Truss.

The Tories left the economy in a disastrous state. Labour are trying to fix years and years of Tory financial problems.
They also have to fix our public services which were decimated by the years Conservative rule.

that old chestnut again

Except she hasn't

It was squeezed into few weeks.
