Rachel from accounts has crashed the economy

1000 replies

Almn0etd · 07/01/2025 21:01

So borrowing costs are now even higher than when Liz Truss was around.

The economy is well and truly cooked and in a far worse shape now that Rachel accounts is in charge.

Why isn’t this dominating the news cycle? Because it’s Labour.

The Tories were atrocious. Labour are an indescribable disaster for this country, surpassing the lowest of the low bars. Cue Labour apologists who don’t mind being made poorer and having the country destroyed, as long it’s Labour doing it to them.

@Pjyid , We are better at many professional services if there is fair competition. The EU has rules that stop us competing 'over there'. Insurance and Investment Services are made more expensive. They also refuse to recognise some of our qualifications. Many rules have been toughened since 2018.
We are still good at high tech mechanical work, Aircraft, high performance cars and high performance EVs. These keep a pool of talent that can be redeployed as opportunities arise. But again there are artificial barriers to trade to protect the EU. These should be challenges at the World Trade Forum. Some airliners are flown to USA rather than Europe for service.
Milliband said they would be generating Hi Tech employment in the approach to Net Zero. That is not happening yet. Solar panels are made by slaves in China that is why they are cheapest. Control Systems are made installed and operated by German companies like Siemens.

Also a lot of people who don't expect the Starmer government to transform the UK in six sodding months.

The economy was left to them heading in the right direction by the last government. Labour turned a corner very quickly and started it heading south again.

How long do you expect we'll have to wait before we see them turn another corner, in the right direction this time, and see even the smallest greenshoots of recovery?

The strikes have stopped, who’s on strike now? Nobody. NHS reform is already happening with the five year plan published in a couple of months. I’d have a lot more respect for people who disagree with me if they stuck to facts. I’m really tired of having hypothesis and twisted half truth thrown at me. A few factual arguments would be great.

Rail passengers face disruption from Avanti strikes every Sunday until June

Train managers on west coast mainline to take action from 12 January to 25 May in dispute over rest-day working

Pjyid · 14/01/2025 10:49

The minimum service level could have ended the disruption if train companies just simply enforced it

MyNameIsX · 14/01/2025 11:00

In this environment, you will be hard pressed to find much sympathy for those who threaten strike action, after they have just been the benefit of Labour’s wage settlement largesse.

The wider public’s patience is finite.

Anniedash · 14/01/2025 14:17

This is the start of things to come. The unions have their friends in power now. It will be like the 70s all over again.

To be fair, I think the Train Manager (Conductor?) strike is different to the drivers strike. Though, it was entirely predictable that if you cave in to one the others will follow in quick succession…

I think the hackneyed phrase ‘read the room’ might be applicable to many of those who would consider industrial action at the moment, especially in those sectors such as the rail network et al.

TheNuthatch · 14/01/2025 16:13

The grown ups are back in charge apparently. We have Rachel Reeves looking after the economy, and Tulip Siddiq keeping a watchful eye on corruption.
What could possibly go wrong!

I don’t usually watch or listen to HoC these days as too painful but I clicked on a clip on a news site to see Labour laughing and carrying on with bluster in spite of their dire economic incompetence

It’s concerning they don’t get the issue and will just carry on

TheNuthatch · 14/01/2025 16:39

It certainly looks that way Eastern

Parsley1234 · 14/01/2025 16:39

Reeves and Rayner laughing 🤦‍♀️

I was recently compelled to take a break from MN, but on my return, what is starkly apparent is that the usual Labour apparatchiks have become a lot less vocal. One wonders why.

I hope this post doesn’t reanimate them, although its increasingly difficult to see which debating line they would take.

Mumsnet was much better back in the day it is just boring old political scoring now!

Tbf I think there’s a thread still very pro Starmer, Reeves and co.

Re pp when Reeves and Rayner laugh about this they may as well laugh at the electorate who will bear the brunt of their inability

BIossomtoes · 14/01/2025 16:56

Note the date of my post and then the date of the Guardian article. 🤷‍♀️

Upstartled · 14/01/2025 17:02

A corruption minister who has left under a cloud of corruption, a safeguarding minister refusing calls for a safeguarding inquiry supported by 77% of the population, an economist chancellor who is actively hobbling the economy...I can't imagine why Labour's popularity is tanking harder than the pound. 🤷🏼‍♀️

TheNuthatch · 14/01/2025 17:10

In another week, they'll be able to blame Trump for everything instead of taking responsibility for their own economic incompetence.

Indeed… your post was on the 10th at 23:03, and my response at the time was that they were already talking about more strike action. Less than 7 hours later, on the 11th at 06:00, news of a strike is published in the Guardian!

Anyway, this’ll be knocked out of the headlines by the latest resignation…

Eylis · 14/01/2025 17:15

I can't see this cabinet making it to the end of the year.

Let’s not forget the transport Minister’s resignation for an undisclosed fraud conviction…Louise Haigh? And of course the multiple examples of freebies being accepted by the whole front bench. And now Starmer and Reeves laughing with bank bench MPs in a discussion about the state of the economy

They seem to lack even a semblance of political nouse, or even recognise that that matters
