Am I being overdramatic?

My husband picked up my son (3) from pre school and was asked to sign an accident form as him and another boy got into an argument over a toy and my son got scratched on his back. They described them as ‘a few little scratches’ and made it sound like it wasn’t a big deal. My husband didn’t check his back at the time and signed the form and came home. When he told me I checked my sons back and I was shocked. To me these are not a few little scratches. I’m really angry and not sure what to do, feel like I need to bring it up with the nursery, but unsure what they can even do. Just want to sense check that I’m not being over dramatic?

I'd agree with you that's definitely not an overreaction. I'd hate to see what they consider big scratches.

YesYesAllGood · 06/01/2025 20:28

That looks pretty bad, OP! I would have guessed a dog or cat had done that.

Amanitacae · 06/01/2025 20:28

Agee - looks really sore.

you should maybe call 111 since the skin is broken?

Crapdoor · 06/01/2025 20:29

Those look pretty deep to me. Like someone dug their nails in rather than scratched.

Munnygirl · 06/01/2025 20:29

That looks nasty! Definitely speak to the pre school about this. I would be furious as well

Wordau · 06/01/2025 20:31

Ouch, your poor son. That looks painful. Someone certainly needs to have a word with the other child's parent about keeping their nails short!!

BunsenBurnerBaby · 06/01/2025 20:31

Have you asked him what happened? That looks like full on digging nails in: and hard nails.

thepariscrimefiles · 06/01/2025 20:32

They look really bad. I hope your little boy isn't too upset. I would definitely speak to the nursery staff tomorrow to find out exactly what happened. Did your DH say why he didn't look at the scratches before signing the form?

Call 111 for broken skin? Seriously

Trickabrick · 06/01/2025 20:33

I’d be seriously unimpressed at the nursery brushing it off as “a few little scratches”, that looks like they dug their nails in more than once. I’d email photos to the nursery and request a meeting to get a full explanation of what happened and how they intend to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Nevergettheusername · 06/01/2025 20:33

That is definitely more than a few little scratches. Ask them to redo the form. They are viscious marks

Hoppinggreen · 06/01/2025 20:34

Speak to the nursery tomorrow and also keep an eye on it as nails can cause a nasty infection

Yes, he named the boy and just said the boy scratched him. We've had issues with the same boy when they were in nursery and they ended up having to separate him. We thought everything had improved but concerned now.

That is unacceptable. Poor boy. Complain and I would also change providers personally.

I did ask him why he didn't check and he said they made it sound really minor so he didn't even think to look.

Zippidydoodah · 06/01/2025 20:35

Ouch! I would definitely take that up with the nursery. They need to be clear that it’s not just “a few little scratches”. Also someone should have intervened before it got that bad.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 06/01/2025 20:36

Was that done through clothing or did he reach in through the neck hole? Nasty.

arcticpandas · 06/01/2025 20:36

Wow. I've never seen anything like that! Unless you count cat scratches. Have you disinfected? Dirty nails that has broken the skin can lead to an infection. I would go to the GP tmw morning and file a formal complaint.

ChristmasPudd1990 · 06/01/2025 20:37

That looks really nasty. Keep these photos and show the school tomorrow.

Tia86 · 06/01/2025 20:37

I would have expected the staff to have shown him at pick up when they were explaining to show how bad they are. They look horrible and as if the boy had quite a grip on him.

Marsh212 · 06/01/2025 20:38

That's horrendous. I hope he is okay. That level of violence cannot be tolerated . I would speaking to nursery definitely 😞

AffIt · 06/01/2025 20:38

Those aren't just scratches: you can see the hand pattern where the nails have been properly dug in...

Soggythatch · 06/01/2025 20:39

What frickin savage did that! Nails dug right in. I'd be teaching DS how to make a fist and aim it at the attacker next time. Thats quite a barbaric attack and wrong for nursery to downplay.

2025willbemytime · 06/01/2025 20:41

A gentle chat that you both need to check your son if in this situation again.

You don't need 111 but I'd clean them and take photos as they heal.

A very strongly worded letter to the nursery is in order.

My son was assaulted at school and it was played down. Sadly they never put the victim first.

greengreyblue · 06/01/2025 20:41

Wow that is more than a few little scratches. That looks like a prolonged attack. I’m in primary school and that would warrant a chat with both parents and I would have shown your DH the marks there and then (in private) so that everything is open and honest. I would email the nursery with the photo and ask how they have taken steps to prevent a reoccurrence( separation, chat with boy’s parents re nails etc)
