To ask dog owners to keep there dogs away from my my children?

I don't dislike dogs what I dislike is dog owners who think there dogs are more important than my children. You dog might be friendly but I'm not willing to test your theory on my babies.
Your dog should never be closer to me/my family than it is you? If your dogs recall isn't good it shouldn't be off lead when other people are around!

Child owners - please keep your grotty little child/ren away from my gorgeous dog. Thank you.

henlake7 · 07/01/2025 13:39

I have had my chihuahua picked up and cuddled by random kids many times over the years.
Also one one occasion my chi x dachshund (a mix of 2 of the most likely to bite breeds) was scooped up by a man and put in a pram alongside his baby!
We'd never met before and both my dog and I had equal 'WTF!' expressions. Thankfully for all involved both my dogs were soft as shit and loved kids.

Equally Ive had my dogs terrorised by off lead dogs owned by twats who thought that the entire world and everything in it was just there for the entertainment of them and their dog.

In other words there are morons everywhere....

It would be very interesting to compare how many little old ladies get knocked over by scooters versus how many dogs run at random people - I think we know which is the winner by a long, long way. Of course scooting in a supermarket is unacceptable behaviour - but it’s rare - unacceptable canine behaviour is rife as are the injuries caused by them.

I don’t dispute that (and in any case, it being rarer doesn’t mean that I’m wrong in saying that both parents and dog owners need to be considerate).

I was simply responding to the person who said that children being out of control can never cause life-changing injuries to other people, which is untrue.

This thread has turned really nasty.

Peoples children and peoples dogs - feelings run high ..

and here we have the problem which causes all the issues… no child is going to suddenly cause life threatening or life changing injuries to you or your family or your dog.

Actually, that’s where you are wrong. Child hurts dog, dog bites child, dog is PTS, dog owning family devastated. Pretty life changing in my mind.

And it’s a bit worrying that you think it’s OK for a child to hurt a dog. Potentially, damage it’s eye, cause it stress and pain, and cause the dog to loose trust in humans.

Dogs need some freedom to run around and expend energy, and I would assume it is good and healthy for them. If someone is walking on a footpath with a dog across an empty grassy field, I see no problem with taking the dog off the lead and letting it run free. The problem is not dogs running around, it is dog owners that are not in control of their dog(s) i.e. they cannot call them back or let them loose in fields where livestock are present and cannot/won't stop them chasing sheep. I strongly suspect this has got worse since the pandemic, when people likely got dogs for company during repeated lockdowns but are clueless or couldn't be bothered to train/socialise them properly. All issues like this across the country come down to the same cause:- thoughtless people.

Dogs do need space to run around freely. It’s called a garden. If your garden isn’t big enough for a dog, don’t get a dog!

there is a beach in a village where my sister lives and ever since lockdown it has - for some reason - become a haven for dog walkers. All of the local primary school kids used to be down the beach during the warmer months, but that doesn’t happen any more and that’s due to the endless harassment from other people’s dogs. We were there before Christmas. 8 children cleared off a beach by a dog Walker driving up and releasing 6 out of control dogs onto the beach. She just laughed when we complained that one of them had stolen a sandwich. There needs to be places outdoors where members of the public can go and not be endlessly harassed.

Most beaches have restrictions on dog during the warmer months.

People don’t ‘own’ children. They are our future.

Indeed. I find it frustrating that we law-abiding tax payers pay tax to have nice public parks, beaches and forests etc which are rendered totally unusable due to the regular harassment from dogs. They have totally taken over everywhere.

It’s dog walkers that really irritate me. You are running a business from a public place, preventing those who pay for the upkeep of that place from using it. There should be fenced off public facilities for exercising dogs and off lead dogs should be banned from everywhere else. The current situation is not acceptable.

TenLittleLadybirds · 07/01/2025 16:54

What I really want to know the answer to, and I'm not being goady, is why some (not all!) dog owners leave their dog's poo on neighbourhood pavements. Presumably that dog owner walks that route with and without their dog and they too will have to avoid stepping in it themselves for the next few weeks whilst it's washed away by rain. Our village high street pavement is constantly covered in dog poo and it doesn't make sense to me when surely they're at risk of stepping in their own dog's poo at some point themselves?

RavenofEngland · 07/01/2025 16:55

Dogs with no recall should always be on a lead. That being said, parents should tech their kids to always ask the owner first if they can pet a dog. My daughter never pets a dog without first asking if it’s ok.

Because they just can’t be arsed to bend down, pick it up and take it to a bin. The thought process goes no deeper than that.

As long as your child has a similar recall! Many a time, I have had to ask the parent to stop their child hurting my dog.

Edited

Yep. We have a very anxious dog who is always on a lead and I can't tell how many times some obnoxious kid has gone up to her or tried to mess with her despite us telling them she is scared and to please tell your kid to back the fuck off. Maybe people should put their kids on leads too?

yodog · 07/01/2025 19:58

Dogs should have recall but I disagree that every time they walk past a child they should be called back to you. My dog is not bothered about your child he is happy sniffing the ground, grass minding his own business.

You know that but what visible signs do other members of the public have that your dog is friendly? How is a member of the public supposed to discern?
