To ask dog owners to keep there dogs away from my my children?

I don't dislike dogs what I dislike is dog owners who think there dogs are more important than my children. You dog might be friendly but I'm not willing to test your theory on my babies.
Your dog should never be closer to me/my family than it is you? If your dogs recall isn't good it shouldn't be off lead when other people are around!

Dogs on extendable leads are a menace if owners don’t pay attention. My husband was bitten by a dog , on our drive. Our 2 year old grandson had just got in the car. The owner was a distance away unaware the dog, on an extendible lead, was out of control. You guessed-the dog is not usually like that…

GripeOfTheDay · 06/01/2025 19:53

As a dog owner, am in agreement with poster.

Dog owners need to be aware how scary it is for little ones. If yr dog can't be gentle and calm around kids, keep them on the lead.

In saying that I do get children wanting to pat our fur boy, he has to sit and never let them stroke his face... He s very gentle with kids, but you just never know...

Nah my dog is more important than your kid.

You are such a strange human 😂😂😂

PansyP · 06/01/2025 20:08

Something i find very difficult to manage is that my dog (now old) just trots along happily, ignoring people (shes only interested in sniffing other dogs bums), plus her recall is good, and so i am quite in control of her, but other dog walkers often pass her and make a fuss (she's particularly adorable looking and a small breed so despite being 11 she looks like a puppy). And they fuss over her and she loves it and whatnot and thats reinforcing the idea in her head that humans, even strangers = affection and kisses and whatnot. Its hard to know how to respond. I want to shout IGNORE HER PLEASE, but that would be seen as extremely rude 😂

MrsPeregrine · 06/01/2025 20:08

And pick up after your dog. I’m sick of seeing the pavements covered in dog shit on the school run and having to constantly tell my children to watch where they are stepping. I saw a huge one on the path that had clearly been stepped in. It’s so thoughtless.

And you aren’t a very smart one if you took it so literally!

Nah. My dog has been in my life for over 14 years. Your kid, maybe 20 seconds and I know sweet FA about them. Guess who I see as more important.

That’s ok babe. I understand that no human in this world loves you like your dog does xx

Whatinthedoopla · 06/01/2025 21:00

I totally agree

I was at a party, and the host left their dog to wonder around, and it kept climbing on my children, which are toddlers! He only put a fence up once we left!

Well, other people do love me. But I get that you were trying to make out I am some sort of social leper with no friends.

You are not being unreasonable, however it's also important to socialise your children with dogs. They are unavoidable and you don't want kids frightened of them.

BURNNN! 😆 🔥

Got to agree though, there is something very disturbing about someone who values the life of a dog (or any pet) more than the life of a human... And it's particularly disturbing to see someone saying they'd value their dog's life more than a child's life. I love my cat very much, but if it was between saving her life, or the life of a 9 year old child (if they were both drowning,) I would have course save the child. (Even if I didn't know the child.)

And if you have to come on here and say 'ooh but lots of people agree with me according to the reactions on my posts, so I must be right,' then you have lost the argument I'm afraid. 😆

"BURNNN?" Are you 12?

I have had my dog for over 14 years. She means more to me than some child passing me in the street.
And I would not save a drowning child over my dog because I would also die (can't swim). And where are the parents in that scenario anyway?

You have a cat. They hate people, and even if they could save your life, they would choose to sit down and lick their own arsehole instead. Dogs can and do save people.

I am a dog owner and I totally agree with you.
I also think parents should not allow their children to run up to dogs and pat/poke/attempt to pick them up.
Dogs are animals like any other-they have triggers and breaking points.
A bit of respect and consideration all round from dog owners, children and their parents would help to ensure everyone can coexist quite amicably.
(I exclude XL Bullies and other bred-for-attack dogs from this. They can NEVER be trusted).

Why?

I have plenty of people in my life. And there are people with kids and dogs who would still prefer their dog over your kids. Are you that entitled that you think everyone should just worship your children? I feel sorry for your children if that is the case. What a way to be brought up.

Why are you so desperately trying to argue with me? 😂 Goodnight to you and your dog ❤️

henlake7 · 06/01/2025 21:46

Well, my lot are always on leads but I would appreciate it if people controlled their kids so I don't end up literally running away from them in parks!
Ok, my dogs are tiny and look cute but one of them is blind and has dementia and really doesn't need to be accosted by a shrieking, grabby child.

Also along the lines of dog mess will people stop dumping their rubbish all over the street so I don't have to worry about cut paws from broken glass or week long bouts of diarrhoea from old food.

Well, it's nice to get all this dog Vs child stuff off your chest isn't it?😂

You know you've hit the nail on the head from the opposite prospective, essentially I am also worried that I will come across as rude by saying please control your dog (given in the sinarios I'm talking about I would have to shout because of the distance) and I also dont want my children to be scared as yes most dogs are friendly but I don't want to test the theory I also don't want the slobbered/muddy pawed etc. no not 'injured' but also not etiquette.

Oh good, another dog bashing thread.

More like bashing thoughtless/irresponsible dog owners, in which case I say bash away. SE England seems to have a high proportion of such people based on my personal experience and compared to my homeland in NW England. A classic scenario when walking on the South Downs, some dog comes charging towards me and there is a woman in the distance trying and failing to call it back with a puny voice. 🙄

Seems fair. I’ve seen children behave abysmally with all parents staring on. A walk in the woods seems exactly the sort of place you might find a dog off lead. Round our way kids play parks forbid dogs, so that’s the place one could fully expect to be dog-free.

Why assume your dog can 'run free' when in the countryside? A dog should be under control by its owners at all times-whether in town or country. It is NOT reasonable that other people and their children, plus other pets, wildlife and farm animals should be exposed to dogs running around loose. It is NOT a dog's right to do so.
I am a dog owner, and I am horrified at the way some dog owners seem to think the countryside is a place where 'Rover' can just run free. Generally 'Rover' completely ignores their pathetic/half hearted/nonexistent attempts at recall. They give responsible dog owners a bad name.

The strawman of the week award goes to you. Having looked at this local thread the issue being discussed is or isn't prioritising the life of a human over the life of a dog, not a dog owner preferring someone else's children over their dog. That is not even remotely the same thing.

A dog can be running free and also under control.
