To think staff at playcentres etc should not smoke in front of children?

Perhaps I'm being overly sensitive, but I've witnessed this a couple of times recently and it's got me thinking. The first time two members of staff were smoking directly outside the entrance to our local soft play centre, and what made it worse was that the wind was blowing the smoke back into the room. Then today my dd and I visited a children's farm - everything about it was lovely, but once again two staff members were sitting at an outside cafe table and smoking. I don't for a minute begrudge them a smoke break, but I do think they should smoke in an area away from public view. What do you reckon?

smoking is being viewed at anti social now, that's just the way it is, if they want to smoke they can do it away from the public

"away from the public"

Like where?! What if they live in rented accommodation where smoking isn't allowed. That means they can smoke where exactly?

MsSparkle · 04/05/2008 21:26

I was reading last night that since the smoking ban, drink spiking has gone up 150%

FreddysTeddy · 04/05/2008 21:27

Of course, binge drinking is also being viewed as anti-social now too so all the pubs will soon be closed down as well (I defy anyone to argue that most pub-goers stick to the govt daily limits).

i'm referring to the outside a playcentre post. i realise i'm miles behind on this thread

Well it wasnt fair according to some that's why they banned it.

I've already said I'm not that bothered about going outside as I get chatting to some lovely people. Its just the general smoker bashing now that I bother about.

But did it really bother people that much when it was the norm. I only ever encountered hostility when the ban was about to come in. As though it was a licence iyswim.

I know non smoking friends used to say there clothes smelled after a night in a club but it didnt deter them and they could always wash them.

And your point re: drink spiking is?

MsSparkle · 04/05/2008 21:28

I may not like people smoking in entrances but i aint against smoking that much!

PMSL sparkle!

Drink spiking is up because most pubs wont let you take a drink out after 9 o'clock so drink are left unattended.

There was also a warning that girls that are out drinking in skimpy clothes will be going out into the freezing cold for a cig and not realising the effect of the cold due to the alchohol which is detrimental to health. I havent heard of anyone dying of pheumonia yet! thank god.

MsSparkle · 04/05/2008 21:36

I thought it was because alot of pubs without gardens don't have pavement licences. It's shocking to think anyone, with all the knowledge we have nowadays, would leave their drink unattended!

Remotew · 04/05/2008 21:38

Not sure about the licence thing. It could just be to encourage people not to stand drinking on the pavement. Think you are right.

So there is no choice to leave the drinks unattended if one requires a smoke.

MsSparkle · 04/05/2008 21:41

If it were me i would finish my drink then go out for a fag, come back in and buy another one. Or take it in turns to go out and have a fag and then one of you can stay with the drinks. I just wouldn't leave my drink unattented, i would rather leave the pub and go home.

Remotew · 04/05/2008 21:45

I guess its not that much different to leaving the drinks when you all hit the dance floor.

I would be very vigilant now re leaving friends early. Make sure you all look out for each other etc.
