Hi all
Staying in an Airbnb with my parents tonight. My bathroom clearly hasn't been cleaned for a few weeks and I can tell. There's gunk in the sink, hair and wee on the toilet seat, the bottom of the toilet is a greeny brown color and hasn't been bleached, hair and soap scum in the shower. The shower drain is full of hair and a couple dead spiders.

Im not good at staying overnight at places but this has made me super uncomfortable and like nothings clean if they haven't even bothered to do the toilet.

Theres also no duvet cover on the bed and I've just pulled a random sheet out the cupboard to put under it.

Please someone calm me down I need to take my makeup off but I feel like everything's going to get contaminated with dirt. I'm on the verge of tears

do you normally have anxious thoughts?

would it help you to look under the sink for a bathroom spray and give the sink a once over?

OurDreamLife · 03/01/2025 22:56

Report it to Airbnb

changecandles · 03/01/2025 22:57

Take photos first off. You'll probably want them for a complaint.

After that just breathe. You won't get ill. Remember you are contaminated every minute you are out in public. Hair is just keratin. Dust is just debris. You are safe. It's unpleasant but you can do this

TimeForTeaAndG · 03/01/2025 22:57

Have you contacted the owner? There's no way it should be that dirty on arrival, maybe the cleaner failed to turn up. Take pictures so you can prove it for a refund/reduction claim.

Then. Are there any cleaning products around the place that you could use? You shouldn't have to but I wouldn't be happy just leaving it like that either. So a quick scrub to get it useable.

Lovemybunnies · 03/01/2025 22:58

I would be the same. Can you make the best of it and put your coat on the bed to sleep on? How are your parents managing? You could contact the owner.

ElfAndSafetyBored · 03/01/2025 22:58

That sounds rank. Definitely report to Air BnB for a refund - take loads of photos - and sleep in your clothes???

Eldermillenialyogi · 03/01/2025 22:58

I would feel the same as you OP as I have a bit of OCD and I wouldn't be able to relax. I'm not sure how Airbnb works but you should complain and if you have to stay there I'd have to clean up a bit. I often take cleaning wipes with me just in case but it sounds like it needs a proper clean!

Definitely take photos and email them now so there is a record of day/ time. This sounds unacceptable. Id certainly say you are not happy and want compensated, won't be paying the full amount etc. I'm sure other posters will give advice re wording an email if needed (I'm not great at wording these things and not sure how airbnb works). Send the email, then try to get some rest and deal with it more fully tomorrow. Good luck.

Hayley1256 · 03/01/2025 23:02

OK deep breaths OP, do you jave any facial wipes that you can use to do a quick clean of surfaces and the toilet so it's usable? Defo take pictures before you do this. Is there heating so you can make your room warm enough to sleep in with just the sheet? Once your comfy try amd read a book to take your mind off it and hopefully the owner can sort the cleaning tomorrow

Yeah agree with this.

Sacredhandbag · 03/01/2025 23:04

It's gross for sure and you deserve a full refund but it's not going to harm you, I promise you that.

People sleep in much much worse conditions. There will be people not very far from where you are right now that are sleeping in sleeping bags on the streets. Or worse.
A b&b that's a bit grotty would be very welcome to some, and a hell of a lot safer.

That's not said to shame you or make you feel bad because as I said, you deserve a full refund, but for now just take some pictures, then give the sink a little rinse, take your make up off, and bed down for the night.

You will be absolutely fine xx

TheChosenTwo · 03/01/2025 23:04

That’s definitely crap but other than giving everything a wipe over and contacting the owner I don’t see what else you can do at this time of night. And leave an honest review!

EasterIssland · 03/01/2025 23:05

I’d be complaining as well. Probably you’ve pay a cleaning fee so make sure you report it and get money back

neilyoungismyhero · 03/01/2025 23:09

I haven't got any particular phobias nor am I a super cleaner but when I go away I do take a bottle of Flash with me - just in case - won't help you now but maybe tomorrow or next time. I agree with other posters though, you should complain it's not acceptable.

ParsonBrown · 03/01/2025 23:10

That sounds disgusting and I would complain.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 03/01/2025 23:11

Take photos and videos now and complain to ABnB and the owner now.

Randomontheinternet25 · 03/01/2025 23:13

It's not great, document it and contact the appropriate ppl.
Can your parents not wipe it over?
As a side note, are you always so anxious? How do you use public transport or toilets?
Have you spoken with anyone professional regarding your thoughts

Onlyme234 · 03/01/2025 23:16

I'm ok on public transport and toilets I generally just use a tissue to touch doors etc it doesn't give me anxiety. Im usually ok with a bit of dirt but when it comes to relaxing and sleeping somewhere unfamiliar then it has to be clean.
I've gone over the bathroom with an antibac spray but it doesn't feel like enough and I've just used my parents' instead as it's not as bad. The shower drain is awful. I've got the dog in bed with me to introduce some familiar dirt and that's helped a bit lol. I'm so silly I still can't relax

Onlyme234 · 03/01/2025 23:19

I didn’t take any pics before I cleaned it but here’s the shower drain, I couldn’t bring myself to touch it. I’m even paranoid about the towels and pillowcases now and have put a T-shirt over the pillow :/

Please calm me down

That is disgusting, you're right. If you try to have a shower with that the water will not drain away properly. Was some of the debris visible before you lifted the silver topper? It looks like it hasn't been cleaned in a while.

Randomontheinternet25 · 03/01/2025 23:23

I can't say I've ever stayed anywhere that I've lifted the shower trap out.

I generally just use a tissue to touch doors etc it doesn't give me anxiety
Again in my world that pretty extreme
There's not a lot you can do tonight , you need rest either way, so you need to mentally write this off, so you can sleep tonight.
You've got photos and I presume emailed the relevant ppl

Onlyme234 · 03/01/2025 23:26

Yeah you can see soap scum on the floor around it and there was hair poking out so I lifted it up

Didn't you read the reviews before booking?

PennyApril54 · 03/01/2025 23:32

You are absolutely right to be annoyed and complain . I hope they are apologetic and either sort it or move you. Good luck.

healthybychristmas · 03/01/2025 23:35

That is really really awful. It sounds as though it hasn't been cleaned at all. When my son went to New York he stayed in an Airbnb and they thought they smelt gas. Within half an hour Airbnb had booked them a hotel nearby and refunded their money. I think it would be worth phoning them to make a serious complaint.
