Neither Bela Karolyi nor his wife was accused of physically or sexually abusing or assaulting anyone. Creating an oppressive climate, yes. Verbal abuse, yes. But these are not criminal offences, however wrong you or I might think them. Many parents are happy to send their children into this type of environment for a chance of Olympic glory.

The accusation is that the climate of oppression they created allowed Larry Nassar to operate unchecked, because the girls were scared. That’s bad enough, but we can’t leave readers with the possible impression that they were sexual abusers.

…. Or physical abusers any different to many in that brutal world. There was a shortsighted encouragement to work through pain and probably an emphasis on weight that triggered some EDs. But this was sadly typical and the term ‘physical abuse’ usually suggests something much darker.

I feel they may have known not committed a SA crime. This man was working on their ranch at the camps, he was the team doctor , the girls were taking to each other. How were they not aware?

Also many of the girls suffered emotional abuse at the hands of Bela & Martha. Made compete on injures .. look at Kerri Strug at the Atlanta Olympics, she vaulted on a broken foot after injuring herself on her first vault.& hobbled back for vault 2
She was told "you can do it" instead of bring withdrawn

@Chainzreaction I can absolutely assure you that some parents did know. However a chance at fame and fortune, or simply escaping poverty/a better future ? That’s worth a lot in some people's eyes. Even their daughters.

The USA team had & still has massive depth Making the US team or getting a scholarship is a massive achievement & speaking out would have banished you to gymnastics Siberia. I totally get why they were afraid to speak out ..

I acknowledged with disapproval this type of physical abuse in my subsequent post. It is worth noting that Strug stayed close with the Karolyis and re-created this pose with BK jokingly at her wedding. As much as I think it’s wrong, she us the ultimate judge.

Who can say what really happened? We may feel cynical but the Karolyis were never charged and I am not seeing the outcomes from any lawsuits online. ‘Innocent until proven guilty’ is a basic principle of both British and American law. We owe it to the dead to honour it.

You are correct, she never spoke out against them. I agree with you that they were never charged but gymnasts from the 2004 Olympic era felt they knew but did nothing . To me ( if true!) that is complicit , failure to take action. The emotional abuse is a given with Karolyi's. Buy you are right innocent until proven guilty.

Jesus. That is a shame. I did rec gymnastics as a child & my dds are involved recreationally now. We are massive gymnastics fans though & I have been since my childhood, I am disgusted to hear that ,I honestly believed all parents were in the dark.

Maybe she'll be "delighted" about that too?

My surestart centre was great but it became frequented by mc mums & then it closed. It wasn't used by the groups it was intended to help. It was a great facility.
