To ask what you do on nights when you don't have a glass of wine

Stuffisperplexing · 03/01/2025 14:05

I have a glass of wine every single night

Just one (or two)

But I think the reliance on it is unhealthy and I'd like to not drink for a bit

It doesn't help that I have anxiety and low mood and wine gives such a nice dopamine rush

It sort of blows my mind that some people don't drink it at all - I'm quite envious of the self reliance

Alcoholic?
somethings gonna get you.
76 and drinking since 18.
yea!

LT1233 · 04/01/2025 19:38

Non-legitimate semaglutide has solved my many addiction issues. Wouldn't qualify as alcoholic on volume but very much dictated my life and especially wine, which im convinced is very much more addictive than most other alcoholic drinks. Still get urges but I can hold off to the end of the week and stick to 2 glasses a night at the weekend (cant physically fit any more in) rather than 1.5 bottles a day. I can just about survive with a pint of diet lemonade instead in the week, and realising that most the time I'm actually hungry and urging food not specifically drink/wine. Usually a quick bite or something suffices. But overall, mostly the semaglutide and I'm dreading the day I stop taking it.

I literally never drink as it always feels like too much effort quite honestly - i spend most evenings running around after preteen/teenagers until 8/9pm then sit and have a cuppa (and normally some kind of small sweet treat) on the sofa with some kind of tv programme with my husband. I point blank will
not drive if I’ve drunk anything, I also don’t like to drink if my husband has so there is always someone completely sober incase of emergency.

I miss unwinding with a glass of wine. Nowadays it makes me tired and quizzy so I have a cup of tea instead. I don’t think having a glass of wine will lead to alcoholism like some posters seem to suggest, some times you just organically change tastes.

A friend actually suggested mounjaro (both of us are normal weight but she says it makes sensible choice not even a choice). Maybe the way.

I never learned to drive which probably does skew myworld view

I think your lifestyle sounds fine OP.

But if you do want to make a change then start small eg switch the wine to an AF drink of choice 1 night of the week, then the following week do that for 2 nights a week, etc.

I don't drink wine at home of an evening (I like the idea but at this current stage of sleep deprived parenthood I'd prob just fall asleep after a few sips!) but I will have a glass or two if I'm out for dinner, and I always notice my skin looks and feels absolutely terrible the next day. So once you cut down you might see big differences that you wouldn't have expected.

This is brilliant!! Do you just sit it in the bathroom and fill from the shower?

Hahaha I use a hosepipe 😅 it takes a little longer to fill/empty than a normal bath but it's so worth it. I had to buy a better outlet pipe though as the one that comes is really flimsy,

Its huge aswell, a lot deeper than a normal bath

I'm pretty low weight but have had lifelong issues with eating and consumption, aswell as issues with other addictions (exercise, cleaning, OCPD to name a few) and this drug has literally changed my life. It'll almost certainly be prescribed for addictions before long, including for alcohol. My husband says it's made me boring but honestly, it's changed my life so much. The wine in particular was destroying me in the past few years.

Stuffisperplexing · 04/01/2025 19:58

Is it ok to empty?

It has 2 drain holes, one at the side and one on the bottom. If you had a big enough shower you could put it in the shower and just pull the plug, I've seen other people buy an automatic water drainer thing ( sorry cant think what the proper name is ) if they dont have a big enough shower

I just open the kitchen door and put the outflow pipe onto my drain

edited to say

I've had mine since July 2023 and never had a problem with it, never leaked

Confusednoodle1 · 04/01/2025 20:09

I have anxiety and depression. I don’t drink alcohol because if I do my low mood is terrible for days after.

just wondering if this also contributes to your low mood creating bit of a vicious cycle for you?

I don't think so because I've had periods without where I haven't felt different but I guess who knows

I don't really feel I get the drink doom feelings some people get

Like a PP I'm not being sarcastic or deliberately snarky but I find the concept of not knowing what to do with an evening without wine really mindblowing. I'm not a teetotaller either - I'm sure when I do drink on a night out every couple of months it'd be classed as binge drinking, so I'm hardly a paragon of virtue. But I find the idea of drinking every single day insane.

In the evenings I'll read, go to the gym, play games, write, watch TV, go and see friends, stare into space in a Tiktok hole for an hour, decide to clean the kitchen cupboards out at 9pm and make a giant mess. Nothing exciting. Maybe a cup of tea or two. So I can't offer you anything more thrilling as an alternative!

I guess the thing is

Life is super dull right?

I do all the things you describe - not tiktok as I think it's dodgy Chinese spyware and I was too old to get caught up in the everyone is doing it era

I just like wine cos it's better than not having

I don't drink at all, just don't like it. But then I'm on antidepressants 😂

BurntBroccoli · 04/01/2025 20:27

I managed Dry January and February last year by drinking Lemon and Lime and Soda with a dash (couple of drops of Angostura bitters) in a wine glass.
It's not sweet and feels like a proper grown up drink.
I use Rose's Lime cordial and Rayner's PLJ lemon hence no artificial sweeteners. Yes Angostura's is alcohol but a teeny amount in a couple of drops.

Funnily enough I just saw an ad for them

Do you feel it helps your health overall?

I do - but I mainly drink it for the taste. Holos is another nice brand. Theirs are flavoured.

Stuffisperplexing · 04/01/2025 13:40

I think dry January is a stupid idea for smug people. I don't think it's a challenge just a dumb arbitrary project. I wouldn't get any satisfaction from it.

A bottle lasts about a week.

Thanks for starting this thread. I have been reading it on and off for last several hours (so not quite sure whether this comment will work by the time it posts...)

and it has inspired me to drink tomato juice with a lot of chilli sauce and Worcestershire sauce - and then a water and cider vinegar- and no alcohol yet tonight!

I think we are peas in a pod and I totally get the having a drink every night thing. And I think you are getting some unecessary goady and harsh comments that aren't helpful - for me, I'd prefer moderation than abstinence. And to find something I can stick to with enjoyment

You said a bottle of wine lasts a week for you, drinking a glass a night. I don't think that amount is much of an issue. (Once you put the "no alcohol is a great idea health wise" viewpoint to bed, which is undoubtedly true - but I'm not going down that route currently and you said from post one that wasn't what you were asking for viewpoints about) but it's the drink every night. I am the same and just really enjoy a drink (for me it can range from real ale, to wine, to cocktails, to fizz) but also know I need to have at least 2-3 nights off- perhaps Monday to Thursday no drinking is the best plan?

PizzaBar · 04/01/2025 21:01

I love a glass or two of wine at home with dinner a couple of nights a week depending on what I am eating. Eg in winter I love a glass of red with pasta/meatballs/roast dinner or tonight I had a glass with some loaded nachos.

Other nights I could have jacket potato/omelette or some other light dinner that I wouldn’t fancy a glass of wine with. Could you plan in some meals that go better with a different drink of choice maybe?
