To think "The Traitors" is the biggest load of guff on TV?

It's stupid. There's no game at the heart of it. It's like Deal Or No Deal for prime time.

There are plenty of good answers on this thread. Your answer a few posts above this is good. Chollysawcutt's answer a few posts above that is good.

I can watch other similar "trashy" formatted TV without getting nearly as annoyed. Even something as dumb and manufactured as Four In A Bed has all of the psychology and people-watching and groupthink of The Traitors but is based on something genuine - the pride and snobbery the contestants have about their businesses/homes/tastes rather than the... "nothing" that sits at the heart of The Traitors.

I like Four in a Bed, as well.

What sits at the heart of Traitors is people wanting to win money…but, also be liked by their fellow contestants, use their (usually negligible) wiles to avoid getting voted off or killed, and not disgrace themselves too badly in front of millions.

I asked what shows you actually enjoy?

MasterBeth · 02/01/2025 21:21

But none of their interactions are genuine.

See, I think they are. I don’t watch any other reality-type shows, as I find them mind-numbingly dull and really quite depressing. And I think most of them are scripted and moulded by the production team.
However I think whilst there may be a bit of prompting from the producers on this, for the most part I think it’s quite real.
The trouble with it - as with Big Brother (which I loved when it first aired) - is that contestants now know how to play the game and so it risks becoming samey or attracting certain types of people. As PPs mentioned. So far the production team have done a good job of changing things up and keeping contestants on their toes. So whilst I respect your opinion, OP, I have to disagree!

crumblingschools · 03/01/2025 00:37

Last series would have been very different if Harry had been voted off early. He played a blinder. So it can make a difference if a traitor goes early. And they don’t know how many traitors there are.

lolly792 · 03/01/2025 07:32

@MasterBeth said their reason for watching it is because their family do, which is the shittest answer on the entire thread as to why people watch Grin

MasterBeth · 03/01/2025 08:01

I asked what shows you actually enjoy?

I enjoy many different TV shows from Succession to Peep Show to Taskmaster to Match of the Day to Grand Designs to Wallace and Gromit to Stath Let's Flats to Antiques Roadshow to Four In A Bed.

No, it's a great answer. It's an honest and revealing answer as to why someone who says the show is fatally flawed knows why it is fatally flawed.

OP posts:
lolly792 · 03/01/2025 08:14

The question isn't whether it's flawed or not (we all know it is.)

You were asking posters their reasons for watching it, and your reason for watching it is that your family do.

It's not compulsory to all watch tv together you know!

LizzieSiddal · 03/01/2025 08:19

I don’t get it either. It’s just people telling lies to each other and hoping to get away with it. It’s nasty.

Dramatic · 03/01/2025 08:24

But the people who like it don't care that it's flawed, it's good entertainment (for the people who like it) and that's why they watch it.

What's very strange is how passionate people get in their hatred about these things. If I don't like something I kind of just stop watching it. It wouldn't make me see red like this.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 03/01/2025 08:33

The tears and drama are OTT but I wonder how much the contestants are wound up by the production team putting ideas in their heads. A bit like on Strictly with all the "how do you FEEL?", "what would you like to say to your partner" questions.

Maybe they'll get letters from home to weep over after they've done 3 days in there Grin. I did enjoy yesterdays episode but couldn't really tell you why, not sure if I'll stick with it

WinterCrow · 03/01/2025 08:40

I've never 'got it'. Never will. Like pp have said, might as well have a bunch of angsty randoms flipping coins. Yet it's getting 5* reviews in the Guardian.

Dontcallmescarface · 03/01/2025 08:43

I watched the 1st episode on NYD and howled with laughter. All the "I'm too scared to sleep", "there's going to be a murder tonight". No mate, you're going to get a "letter" that's as about as menacing as a 4 year olds letter to Santa and then you go home. I'll probably watch the entire thing because it's one of the funniest programs I've watched in ages.

crumblingschools · 03/01/2025 08:45

One of the traitors gave a clue right at the beginning

KenAdams · 03/01/2025 08:51

The faux stress and crying this season are ridiculous. Previous seasons are much better.

What's very strange is how some people think that calling something a pile of shite demonstrates a "passionate hatred".

But plenty of people on this thread don't think it's flawed. They think the gameplay makes sense. They think the players determine the outcome. They blatantly don't.

Dontcallmescarface (above) articulates well how you can watch it because it's stupid and doesn't make sense. Fair enough.

People who say "because it's good entertainment" aren't really explaining anything.

So why do you watch other tv programmes @MasterBeth? Why do you watch Taskmaster for instance? Four in a bed?

crumblingschools · 03/01/2025 09:08

Weirdly Four in a Bed is tv programme of choice in DS’s student house!

I'm disappointed that there's isnt a better range of ages this year, as previously mentioned it's too much Instagram generation.

I do hate it when they start attacking someone's character and saying they must therefore be a traitor, I also think that when some gets suspected they get isolated and others stop talking to them, which is why Charlotte? and Elen got so emotional, it's the being excluded for hours beforehand, and I think all the younger ones this year will struggle with that.

Getting a traitor out early is pointless, you're better off making friends with the suspected traitor and waiting until more people have left.

happinessischocolate · 03/01/2025 09:12

The best twist at the end would be a faithful saying I've known you were a traitor from the start now give me the money 😜

chollysawcutt · 03/01/2025 09:12

I have to say, I do agree that the jury is still out for this series. But then it is early days.

I didn't watch the first series because the amount of 'contestants' just put me off. I thought, no one has time for this.

Then, the second series I started as something to watch alongside DD when she was away at uni and we decided to 'connect' each week over the show and honestly, I was hooked from day one then. Last year's was a stellar script and a really compelling narrative.

This year has not gripped me so much yet. I think I need a protaganist to root for and a nemesis to hate, but no one is stepping up just yet. However, I have faith in the process and in Claudia, the consumate pro, to steer the ship to a satisfying and entertaining conclusion.

I do concede it has a shelf life though, as the 'cast' become more knowing.

Boredlass · 03/01/2025 09:15

Well millions love it. Go watch a documentary if you think it’s beneath you
