Friends awful baby name

ThisIcyHare · 01/01/2025 16:26

My best friend is due to have a baby soon, they are having a girl and she has been talking baby names with me, which feels super special. She has got a few very lovely traditional girly names, and a couple of more unusual choices, but not ‘offensive’. They are names I would expect from her. However, she has one absolutely terrible name, that actually just feels very cruel. It would be bad even by American standards and ‘tragedeigh’ names. It’s not that I wouldn’t choose it, it’s just crazy stupid and the child will be ridiculed by peers and adults. Some of her choices are genuinely wonderful, but I’m so worried she will madly choose this one awful name, I can’t say anything can I?!

Because when I discussed baby names with my mum, she spared no second to turn her nose up at a name we’d loved for a long time, which was Alice. A perfectly normal name. I just didn’t want to hurt her feelings, but have had some good wording suggestions from people on here

Exactly! I really didn’t like it when my mum put a downer on the names I had in mind for my little one. One of which was Alice funnily enough. I agree it can be hard to say you don’t like a name in a kind way - but you’ve had loads of great advice on here and if you say you love the other names, but think this one might be misunderstood, then I think that would work!

I, like many others probably, plodded through this post because I was sure the poster would give the name eventually. She didn’t! I hope she is happy that she wasted so much of our time with such a pointless post. It was like getting to the last page in a book and finding someone had torn it out!
I am pretty easy-going, and it takes a lot to rile me, but this post has, with knobs on!
I have made a note of her name so I can avoid her posts in future!

You can click on the 'see all' section in the OP's post and see only their comments.

I agree tbf 🙈 how can you talk about a talking point when you don't know the point! 😂 Sorry OP, just my take.

I'm going to have a guess anyway - Virtue?

I'm on android and on the app there's no "see all " option. Its very frustrating

Bearbookagainandagain · 01/01/2025 19:50

Personally, I would find a way to tell her without being too direct. And try to find out where that name come from before saying anything, e.g. does it have any significant meaning, because that could mean changing your approach (maybe offering an alternative).

You described it as a name that's cruel. Hard to think what that might be, unless something like Hitler or Stalin!

I work with a child named Stalin. I cannot fathom what made his parents name him that.

It’s not a ‘made up name’, it’s a word that you’d use, a bit like Integrity. That’s the closest I think I can get without saying what it is

A synonym or variant of Integrity so...

Honor
Honesty
Sincerity
Unity
Morality
Virtue
Nobility
Decency
Solidarity
Stable

To be fair historically a lot of these where not deemed weird, it use to be common to use unsubtle word virtues, some are still commonly used now in some cultures. Integrity in itself is a name with a history of use.

I'm android too, I don't use the app though (I also found it very frustrating!).

If she asked me for an opinion I would have to say something like; “I’m not sure how that one will play out at school, whilst it’s original, you don’t want DC to be self-conscious, or even teased because of it. I like XYZ names much better, they are lovely, and still distinctive.”

@Ilikeadrink14 , all you have to do is click on the text See All (bottom right of the original post) Then you can see every subsequent comment by the OP and ascertain in 30 seconds whether she ever gives or confirms the name. This saves hours of time and helps you work out whether to invest your time or move on.

Personally, I don't think tne OP was wrong to not give the name. She was clear from the outset that she just posted to get advice on the issue, not the word. But if you're looking for more entertainment, that's fair enough and your choice to move on, rather than criticising the OP.

Oh, like Patience, and Constance. And Grace.

RightOnTheEdge · 01/01/2025 20:00

A lot of posters are saying Honesty.

My dd 14 has a friend called Honesty and nobody bullies her about it if it's that OP.

I find myself agog at some of the more 'normal' names these days, some people seem to be giving birth to their great grandparents, with their Ada and Esme type names. But that's just me, having grown up with those as 'old people' names, and I know I'll get used to them.

Just waiting to meet my first little Eglantina. It's not Eglantina, is it OP?

Just wait until the current generation of children start calling their own kids Linda and Janet in 30 years’ time! Because to them, those names will be retro and a reminder of grandparents/great grandparents, just like the present-day crop of babies called Ivy and Mabel.

FrangipaneMincies · 01/01/2025 17:50

It's not Elphaba, is it? Someone I know wanted to call her daughter that, from 'Wicked'

I think there's worse names. it's quite pretty. it's probably going to be quite popular soon though.

Butchyrestingface · 01/01/2025 20:01

I like Placenta. 🤞🏻

Royaly82 · 01/01/2025 20:03

I don't understand why you can't just tell her you don't like it and give her reasons why?

CrowleyKitten · 01/01/2025 20:03

SlightlyJaded · 01/01/2025 17:54

Compliment the nicer names a lot.

Is there some way you can lead her from 'Summerleigh-Bailee-D'vine Integrity' towards something with a similar meaning but less literal? So if it was integrity, you could suggest 'Honor' or 'Honora' as a middle name? Or Sade or Erica or one of the names whose origins are the word honorable'?

I just read that as "Erotica"! 😂

JohnofWessex · 01/01/2025 20:05

I once owned Jensen Buttons dads house.

Based in that example I wanted to call one of my children after the best thing I ever drove.

Sadly I dont have a child called 'Parsons and Marine Experimental Turbine Research Association' (Pametrada)

I bet people call her ''Anty-Gone'' though.

In French it is pronounced Ontee-gonn.(did it for A level)
