IF her tale did have any truth to it, she would be an awful lot more angry at the hotel than she seems to be.

THIS

if if lent something expensive and had genuinely left it at a hotel and it was pilfered I would be fuming with the hotel
they’d get a bad review and I’d be constantly on at them!
it’s just a lie from her

Heidi2018 · 01/01/2025 23:46

CautiousLurker01 · 01/01/2025 23:31

Not sure if anyone has suggested this, but is it possible that she actually broken it? Dropped it/left it on something flammable etc? Ie she made up the story of it being stolen because she doesn’t want to admit she broke it and would have to replace it (odd logic I know, but she probably genuinely thought that their being stolen would get her out of repaying you)?

Not a hope! She thinks OP is a pushover and won't care, so if she had broken it she would've just said "oops I broke it" and expected OP to say "aw that's a pity" and move on!

KatyaKat · 01/01/2025 23:49

@Langarg is it worth you ordering one ASAP from Boots whilst they're on offer (without telling her)? As they may go out of stock/back to full price before she sends you the money for the discounted one you kindly offered her the option of getting.

At least then if she doesn't pay up/return it, you've got a cheaper replacement, rather than having to fork out the full amount (or, she sends you the £399 but they've returned to full price in the meantime)

TwistedWonder · 01/01/2025 23:49

I think you’ve got to be prepared that she’s never going to replace it OP and in that case I would absolutely publicly shame her on FB etc to endure all of your mutual friends know exactly what a lying little thief she is.

Your last message is perfect - let’s see what happens next

honeylulu · 01/01/2025 23:49

Yellow weather warning my arse!

I'd be saying "oh that's a shame, hotel has agreed to me going in to view the cctv to see who left the room with it, I'll let you and the police know how I get on with that".

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 01/01/2025 23:52

I can’t believe the cheek of this woman! I think follow up with a message that if she buys you a new one, it’s not to be second hand and you’d like a receipt. It wouldn’t surprise me if you get that dodgy £150 off Facebook dumped at your door.

FizzyBisto · 01/01/2025 23:52

What is she actually claiming to be hoping to achieve by driving all the way to the hotel?

I presume they have a phone number and email address on one of which she's contacted them, and they've said that they haven't found it anywhere on their premises, so... what?

Is she hoping to confront them and demand that they hand it over - maybe threaten them with trashing the place, leaving shocking reviews everywhere or giving the manager a wedgie if they don't; or maybe asking if she can do a day's free work experience as a room cleaner and search all of the rooms in the vain hope that a guest may have an identical Air Wrap in their room that she can nick and hide under the housekeeping trolley, then covertly take it to her car after dark?!

If this were true, it would still make no sense whatsoever.

CrowleyKitten · 01/01/2025 23:53

menopausalfart · 01/01/2025 21:45

@Langarg Did you know that the Daily Mail picked up the story?
Must be a shitty journo if they have to fish MN for stories.

it's the daily fail. that's a given.

CrowleyKitten · 01/01/2025 23:56

Langarg · 01/01/2025 22:09

She has replied people!!!! I remain flabbergasted at her CF’ery. She said due to there being a yellow weather warning in place tomorrow for snow and ice, her DH doesn’t feel comfortable travelling to the hotel but they will assess the driving conditions in the morning.

My patience is running very thin and I have done as some previous posters suggested and have sent a text message back saying the following ‘I hoped this would have been resolved by now. I’m disappointed that it took you so long to initially tell me that you had lost the airwrap. You say you value our friendship however it saddened me that you said this has taken the shine off your wedding, in what felt like an attempt to make me feel guilty about the situation.

Going forward as far as I can see there are 3 options. 1) transfer me £399 so that I can buy a new airwrap (boots have them on offer) 2) you buy a new airwrap and have it sent to me or 3) we need to get the police involved if you genuinely did leave the airwrap in the hotel and the hotel claim it isn’t there, meaning it has been stolen’

Also, what a slow news day it must be for the daily mail to report on it! Unless the exposure means Dyson will give me a freebie 🤣

even if they do, still insist on getting reimbursed for the cost. then maybe splash out on another extravagant treat you couldn't normally justify. or something like a spa day, to get pampered to within an inch of your life.

Who's to say that OP isn't skint too?

Or, if she does have the money available, still finds herself unable to justify effectively spending £900 on a hairdryer, albeit a highly desirable, high-tech one?

BIossomtoes · 02/01/2025 00:07

Christ, what is it with MN and spa days? What a miserable waste of a day.

Think you misunderstood my comment - I was saying the opposite. That if CF admitted she’d broken it she knew she’d have to replace it. By lying that it’s been stolen she thought that she had a get-out of repaying the money by saying oh dear it’s not my fault, someone else stole it… except that doesn’t work does it, not if OP insists on CF making a police report.

Ie I think she’s lying about the item being stolen not because she’s stolen it herself, but because she’d broken it.

Whoah calm down, it was just a suggestion, hence starting post with 'is it worth...?'!

Tink3rbell30 · 02/01/2025 00:19

Tell her the hotel have agreed for you to go in and view the CCTV.

hiddeneverythin · 02/01/2025 00:20

Sounds like the end of the friendship anyway and not before time

cherish123 · 02/01/2025 00:21

Hope you get it back soon.

But even if someone did steal it, it would still be the friend’s fault for leaving it in the hotel for either a staff member or the next guest to steal - and if it was a genuine mistake and I was OPs friend I would have contacted the hotel myself asking for CCTV footage and for them to check their records to track down any guests that booked the room after she left.

cherish123 · 02/01/2025 00:21

or replacement

CRD67 · 02/01/2025 00:21

The police won't be interested. As I said on the first thread, take it to small claims court, get a high court writ, and get a debt collector to sort things out. Keep all messages as proof.

Mrsbloggz · 02/01/2025 00:22

I agree with the PP who thinks she must have form for this sort of behaviour and/or see the op as a soft touch. This seems too brazen for it to be her first such venture. But then did she really think op would let this go because it was her wedding. Mind boggling!

LunaTheCat · 02/01/2025 00:23

Vodkafairy.. also reading from NZ .. got home work 1 am this morning and spent FAR too much time catching up.
Can I nominate for classics?

Fraaances · 02/01/2025 00:24

I agree it’s time to contact the hotel and ask about their CCTV.

Needanewname42 · 02/01/2025 00:32

They won't have CCTV in the bedrooms for privacy reasons.
Op has zero evidence that it was actually left behind. She wasn't the hotel guest the chances of them trawling through cctv in the corridors to watch their staff, for someone who wasn't even staying there is pretty low.

Incakewetrust · 02/01/2025 00:41

She is an absolute charlatan! Karma is going to have an absolute field day with her!

Christ, what is it with MN and spa days? What a miserable waste of a day.

I'd love it. if OP doesn't, fair enough. if Dyson send her one, she should still get the money, and should spend it on something that's a treat. be that a spa day, skydiving, a weekend away somewhere lovely, or whatever else is a treat.
